- For the last part of our US road trip, Head Distiller Ned gets up close - but not too close - with the inferno inside Kelvin Cooperage. This is where American White Oak barrels go through the toasting and charring process that produces the hallmark vanilla style flavours.
A large proportion of the wood we use is the freshest first-fill or virgin American oak. So Head Distiller Ned Gahan took a road trip across the heartlands of American white oak - Quercus Alba - to find out just what goes into making this barrel type the backbone of the whisky (and whiskey) industry.

I love these insider videos that show you how and why a process is done. It really makes you appreciate the final product.
Thanks, Jason. We had a lot of fun filming them too.
loving this series. Can't wait for the release in Sept :D
Very interested in what is happening at Waterford. Was hoping to be in Ireland this may but with what is happening have had to postpone for a year. Hope to be able to visit the distillery in May 2021? Will there be any Whisky released at that time ? Cheers and hope you and your family's are all healthy and safe.
We'll absolutely have whisky by that point. In fact, we're bottling it later next month...
@@WaterfordWhisky Yay Congratulations on your opening release.
