    • @rickvia8435

      HV diodes to service the rectifier board are not available. Substitution of the entire board is the practical remedy. My question is: What is output of this UHF transmitter..?

    • @warrenosborne1539
      @warrenosborne1539 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given that phase B was low, I would say an open diode. As a short would have caused a fault trip. The noise is from eddy current loss (inductive coupling) in the delta transformer imbalance.

    At Woofferton we have a large number of high voltage oil filled components. These days we are not allowed to expose our skin to oil. We have to wear full glove protection. It makes the job more difficult but it is much kinder to our health. I fèel for the engineers in this video. Great fault finding technique.

    Just removed 2 of the same Beam supply's. One of our engineers came up with a great idea for pumping the oil out. We had been using a regular water pump. but the pump was beating the, thinner than water, oil to a foam and taking much too long . He bought a "el chepo" drill pump.. That on a heavy duty drill worked wonderful .
    Sad to see the good ole Sigma go. Well maybe not that sad..

Mineral oil would not be used here since the transformer is in a closed building. I suspect it is not PCB for all such transformers were retrofitted years ago or disposed of. Yeah the oil needs to be dry and clean. At 55kv it isnt as critical because the parts are bigger and physically isolated, but with X ray stuff you need it dry and vacuumed. I have worked on similar units filled with SF6 gas that output 60 to 260kV at a few AMPS that actually use a high frequency transformer and scary capacitors inside. When these go there isnt a hum, there is a bang...

    Taking a chance removing the rectifier board under oil. Great risk dropping the mounting hardware.
    I did find the troubleshooting technique to be sound however need to employ HV gloves whenever applying shorts and grounds. Lockout, tag out, use of PPE, should be practiced along with human performance methods. Tailboard briefs detail all of the hazards prior to work.
    Again troubleshooting technique was sound and reasonable safe provided proper use of PPE applied. Thanks for sharing.

    Even if that oil is PCB free mineral oil it is a bad idea to stick your unprotected arms into it. First he cleans the lid nit to contaminate the oil, then he works with his bare hairy arms submerged. Also the shorting/securing of the capacitors is done in an unsafe way.

    • @ohgoditsjames94
      @ohgoditsjames94 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about that too. When manufacturing transformers, they take special care to have dust free environments to ensure contamination doesn't occur, it can't possibly be good to have skin cells, hair and general grime that accumulates on the skin contaminating the oil.

      Lower amp draw on one phase with loud hum means one diode stack is open and maybe arcing inside on the less current drawing phase. It was assumed but swapping is a bit quicker than diagnosing and fixing, also IME when one diode goes the rest are not far behind, replace as a set like spark plugs and wires.

    When you measured from phase to ground I assume the neutral is connected to ground.

    • @frederikwinnubst7863
      @frederikwinnubst7863 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not strictly necessary to have a neutral in a three phase system. When this is the case, for example if the three phase power is generated by transformer windings in a delta configuration, the circuit is usually grounded via a grounding transformer. In that case you measure each phase with respect to ground because indeed, the only thing the 'neutral' is connected to is ground.

      Safety is not a management priority until someone gets injured or killed. Most stations will provide no help to the transmitter guy and PPE is just a waste to them. The management has usually never been to the transmitter and would not know how to find it. Hint: It is nowhere near the golf course. They will, however, keep calling the transmitter to see when we will be back on the air. Even in a station like the one pictured (A-B parallel operation), They seem to think: A. We are still on, I see a picture, B. 50% power! We are losing half of our viewers! c. Will this be expensive? D. No overtime, period. OH, It is not PCB oil... It is some sort of mineral oil. 36,000 Kilovolts ? That would be 36 Million volts. Further on they show using a standard volt-ohmeter to read three phase voltates. Can't be done ! Must use a three phase voltmeter.

    • @karhukivi
      @karhukivi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can measure each phase separately! A domestic lighting circuit is on only one phase and you can measure voltages in your home.

      When he was wearing gloves I thought, if he isn't careful the oil is going to go over the end and soak his hand, then he just takes them off so I'm like, OK, nevermind. Wouldn't it just make everything you touch kind of oily?

    • @Obladgolated
      @Obladgolated 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@richardemms3050 Thats what I was thinking, but it appears he was actually wearing the gloves in case any of the submerged capacitors were holding a charge. Once he was sure they were discharged, he took the gloves off. I guess getting zapped under oil hurts as much as getting zapped in air.

    BOY .... Brown, orange, yellow. Indicates on visual hi voltage. Grey can be the neutral. Out of balance happens on 120/240 VAC, single phase in homes also. Amprobe test first 2 poles ... should be same. Then test SP breakers on each phase n note amps by circuit number. A= B amp draw is balanced. Swapping due to each owners bldg use will be different. So u swap wire, not breakers, until A does equal B. U can save consumer between 10 to 15% on bill. Measured n proven. While ur at it .... set up a breaker control index/legend of circuit control. What's on that branch circuit?

    These videos are filled with misinformation right off the bat they said this tube as with all tubes require very high voltage to operate not true most tubes and I would bet even that tube amplifier runs off a low voltage I've never seen one that operated above 12 volts Intuit the output can be much greater but the input is very low and takes very little to operate that's the nature of tubes and why they are called amplifiers if you had a high voltage to start with you would not need the tube

    What third world safety is for suckers country was this filed in? At 3:24 and 4:12 the guy is measuring live voltage with no safety gear, No gloves and the shirt is not arc flash rated I would bet plus short sleeve shirts are not allowed at all. Proper safety gear must ALWAYS be worn no exceptions. This would get me a disciplinary write up immediately following the work, and for good cause. Plus I have done this kind of work and in 20 years have never done it without draining the oil. This video looks put together by someone who knows NOTHING about electricity.
