      lol I'm seriously terrible, but you just gotta find the notes and stick to them. it's all one finger playing on the right hand, if you asked me to do chords you'd have to wait a while till I figure it all out. Also that was like the 5th take, the other ones weren't so nice :P

Jam-packed, really. And that ending solo... Awesome stuff from beginning to end.

      @@nathanaeldobias6660 Is this the kind of music you're talking about: th-cam.com/video/X4MOLgIobs0/w-d-xo.html ? In that case, you can do just fine using the natural minor, pentatonic minor and occasionally harmonic minor scales. Dorian works very well, too. The chord progression is quite important for this sort of music as well. Use lots of dominant V chords. It's helps to end your melodic phrases by going from a dominant V chord and back to the minor I chord.
      Those are just a couple of tips you can use to get started. I would suggest transcribing songs that you like and analyze them to figure out how you can get the same sound in your own music.

    I can hear it pretty well, but whenever teachers start talking about scales and theory, inevitably my brain starts to hurt. But that chart with the notes of the scale and your climbing it explaining how it determines which chords work, made a light go off at a fundamental level. And that gives me something solid to build on, which should help me put practice jams together, instead of being forced to rely on the jam tracks others make.
    So, I'm pleased your vid popped up as I was feeling frustrated from theory discussions in some vids I watched previously.

      @@SignalsMusicStudio I wouldn't say it has chromatisisms, but it does shift between this scale and double harmonic major. It's also a great song to track the evolution of, from first recording in the 20s to the Dick Dale version. Depending on the musical context, that sixth degree differs.

      Misirlou is actually in a scale that is extremely similar to Phrygian Dominant, but notably different at the same time. It's in Double Harmonic Major. Which can be thought of as just Phrygian Dominant, with a raised 7th.
      So E Phrygian Dominant would be E F G# A B C D (E)
      E Double Harmonic Major would be E F G# A B C *D#* (E)
      One of the big giveaways from hearing Phrygian Dominant (or any mode of Harmonic Minor) is that large interval jump between that F and G# (In the Key of E) In Double Harmonic Major, you get a *second* large jump between the C and D# and makes it able to be used quite differently.

    • @nick.raptis
      @nick.raptis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@royalcat10 Yes correct. It's a raised seventh, not sixth as I mentioned. I feel however that its chord harmony more closely fits the phrygian dominant. Not sure but in the Dick Dale version I remember the melody follows the double harmonic while others the phrygian.
      My comment though was more about a radio experience I had with a history of Misirlou over dozens of versions. You could hear both those modes used, depending on the musical context.

    Some nice encouraging teaching here. Yes, authentic flamenco players will sometimes play using just the Emaj and FMaj and also play things like E over F, But the E is enhanced by the b9 being added. Paco de Lucia actually added 15 chords to the flamenco form during his complec journey with John McLaughling and Al de Meola and other artists like Chick Corea.

    4:10 That C augmented with the C on top really wants to resolve stepwise down to an Am 2nd inversion to my ears, completely defeating the purpose of the mode perhaps :) It was nagging me so much I had to play it.

    7:50 in stead of 3 3 2 2 you should done 3 3 2 2 2, that actually is a flamenco rhythm. Its called bulerias. Look it up.
    What you chould also do is have a 12/4 time and change chords on every three fourth notes but have the percussive "down beat" on 3, 6, 8, 10, and 12. This rhythm is called soleá
    Sorry im just a flamenco nerd but i just wanted to say this.

    I have to say that this video changed me a lot. It made me realize the potential in switching away from major/minor/harm.minor and exploring new tonalities. Moreover I have to say that Phrygian tonality in general became my favorite one.
    Sharping the 3 is only one of the dozens of cool concepts you can do to spice it up. After some exploring, you'll notice that pretty much every note from a chromatic scale has some interesting interaction with Phrygian, which can be used to your advantage (When I do phrygian improv, the natural 2 is the only note I can't find a place for, it kills the phrygian vibe too much, however natural 9 in upper extensions is perfectly fine).

  • @samuelitooooo
    @samuelitooooo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    One reason I like this scale and why it feels energetic to me is because the tonic feels like it’s in a perpetual dominant chord.
    There’s a track that demonstrates what I mean by this and it happens to be my favorite desert video game soundtrack: Bone Dry Dunes on MarioKart 8 (just put that on TH-cam search). The eighth measure after the intro (there’s a flat 3 chord, however, even though the melody plays natural 3) moves from the tonic G major and modulates to a C minor, and you get that feeling of resolution.
    But the song is far from over as by that point it’s still building up, and it eventually goes back to G major on the Phrygian Dominant with a super upbeat rhythm; and it ends by playing an actual dominant chord, a D major (it’s not a diminished 5), and resolving to the G major tonic.
    My apologies if my explanation is subpar

    Can you do something about what makes "lava level music" so distinct? Like, whenever you enter a lava level in almost any video game, there's an extremely distinctive low tempo, somewhat syncopated almost harmonic minor or phrygian but not quite feel to it, but it's so unique and I'm not really able to understand why. You're the best TH-cam music theorist teacher out there and perhaps you can shed some light (blackbody radiation from molten rock I guess) as to why Lava Level music sounds the way it does. In Avenged Sevenfold's "Nightmare" there's a riff in the beginning that sounds like it could belong in one. The rock/metal feel to it.
    Also since lava is just liquified minerals can we just call "lava level music" just "Molten Rock" or "Molten Metal" depending on what it leans towards?

      @@SignalsMusicStudio Coming from the other side (grew up primarily learning Indian classical and taught myself western music theory later) - watching you play with and talk about scales/modes other than the ubiquitous major/minor is so refreshing to my ears. Absolutely love your channel, I've been polishing up my music theory by binge watching your videos. Superb stuff, thank you so much for putting it together!
      Indian classical music relies heavily on on-stage improvisation within a particular mode (i.e., sticking to a tonality throughout within a piece while having the players improvise within it), so there's such a plethora of scales and modes involved. Modes like the lovely Mixolydian, Phrygian Dominant, Dorian or Mixo b6 etc. sound quite familiar as a result (and have corresponding 'ragas').
      I'd be happy to give you a little intro to some of this stuff if you happen to be stopping by San Francisco any time! Cheers.
