Liam and Marisha made c1 connected characters and put Keyleth and Vax on the table; Travis made Chetney as a Chutney joke, so Matt send him to the North Pole-equivalent
I think, Tal knew right away something was off. Its like he smelled the trap. While everyone is screaming and happy-panicking he went from a brief moment of joy to silent concern. Look at him at about 27:44! Poor guys face went from "🥺🥹☺️" to "🤔🧐🤨" in a split second.
He's gotten a real good sense for when the long game is about to be triggered by Matt. You could see the moment Taliesin said internally "this is too easy..."
Ira, a few episodes ago (or something, time has no meaning): "It seems like they're missing a lens..." BH & audience: "Oh, that's good!" ...................
I think the damage they did, the dead exhaltants, and general havoc, *delayed* the final result, in essence giving them time to rally before the end of the solstice. Also I think Beau, Caleb, Ira, and keyleth will pop up at the beginning of the session divided between the two groups
I'm super excited to see what happens next. Not just because everyone in Exandria must've gotten involved, but because the teleporting thing either affected the entire world or just that area of Bassuras...and we don't know who else was on those ships. I feel like Matt's gonna bring in some familiar NPCs and maybe the returns of some guest characters from here on out.
When you said "No, wait....I don't think Keyleth is the key. Maybe it's Vax. I think Vax is the key! Don't celebrate just yet guys" I was like "Oooh, clever girl!"
So they paused the release... I think group Laudna is near the Drowned City, it's likely tied to Ashton's backstory. Uthadurn is interesting as it's Chetney's backstory, but it's also near Eiselcross and the ruins of Aeor for FCG backstory. Also Aeorian weapons wouldn't hurt, if Bell's Hells could get an army of Aeormatons and security cannons....
Commenting before I watch this because I can't WAIT to see your reaction to this episode, I've been looking forward to it!! I have so much admiration for Matt Mercer, what a genius storyteller. C3E51 will go down as one of Critical Role's most memorable episodes ever.
i think since they damaged the device enough instead of bringing preydathos to exandria it sent all of them to different points on exandria some farther away than other. even if this theory is wrong idc it was still a fantastic edge of your seat episode and i cant wait for Thursday
this was so amazing, it was bait after bait after bait i was losing my shit all episode, i wanted someone to die tho just to spice things up, but man talk about tragic i really loved all of it, now lets see what happens on the next one!
Can I just say that Matt Mercer is a genius. He set this whole thing in motion years ago and it's just been so fun to watch. Ignoring all of the cool moon stuff in C2 and Just starting in C3, the way he set up the events of This episode right from day 1 of C3 is so cool. Starting with the attack on the Ashari targeting Keyleth. Why Keyleth? Oh I don't know, Maybe they wanted to kill her, maybe they needed something from her, maybe they wanted to draw her out to use her as a trap so they could draw her divinely appointed Boyfriend out and use him as a lens in a machine to break a God eater out of a Moon prison! You know, the usual. So many little clues, Ludinus being purposefully sloppy, the Followers wearing the Matron of Ravens' talismans despite not worshiping her, the Malleus Key missing a lens at such a late hour. It's so good!
Matt is a master at cliffhangers. The two groups are far away and no one has any fast travel magic yet. A common theory I heard, that I think could be true, says that the team could be split for a while. If so, how is Matt gonna handle it? A slew of guests? Everyone rolls up a second character? I have no clue but I'm excited.
I honestly felt it was too railroaded, the party destroyed three groups of batteries and still the machine functioned. They also had no way of landing a hit on Ludinus or deal enough damage to Otohan to stop them in time. Imogen rolled super high on a persuasion check, even using a reference to her backstory and it still wasn't enough to get her on their side. The party did super well infiltrating the base, it just feels bad to not reward them and to pretty much make the sacrifice of the airship completely pointless as well as potentially killing off multiple of their old characters.. The players probably really enjoyed it, which is what matters the most, but as a player I would have hated if a 50 episode arc came to this climax in my game. Felt like a cutscene without player agency.
Master class in psychology and storytelling. As for the "railroading", Matt has been dropping clue after clue that our lovable ADHD kids have scarfed down for 50 episodes that these bads were super smart and powerful. Matt didn't give them much agency during the destruction of Emon, just flaunted the power of the Chroma Conclave. This is another of those moments we can only admire Matt's ability to destroy his creations for the sake of story. I love that the original pairs are now split, sorry Sky, Laudnagen needed another split. It's even worse since pretty sure only Team Imogen can initiate contact at that range. The players joked plenty in the beginning about VM or MN saving the day, Matt proved he'll put everything on the chopping block.
I get what you're saying but Matt just abandoned combat initiative for no real reason in the moments where Vax was turned into the lens. There was so much time for people to react and do something but he didn't allow them that.
Respectfully disagree. The initiative was FCG, Orym, Fearne, Chet, & Imogen, with Laudna & Ash off side-quixoted. 3rd combat in 24 hrs, Fearne probably had the most spell slots left. Ludinus is an Archmage, Chet demonstrated how much they could do about him, and his manipulations of the machine before were probably legendary reactions. So him and Liliana have been holding their actions with all the bells and whistles for Vax's appearance (I'm betting a Wish amplified). We also have all assumed the 5 Liam rolled was for Caleb, might not have been, neither Liam or Marisha rolled that great for them previously. Every player got one last shot to do something, but only Orym accomplished anything (gotta love narrative dice). Lifting the Vaxbead to the machine was probably well within Liliana's Exaltant abilities. Honestly the next most effectives were Laudna & Ashton, that last bit of damage may have interfered just enough. Or they didn't and Matt is gonna burn his own world to the ground like never before. He's done enough broken world games/campaigns I'm sure he has tons of ideas. It would make Exandria that much more challenging if clerics with powers became even more rare, or even magic users in general unless it comes from specific traits like our party. Did Matt make his players feel a lil helpless as the weight of the stakes were shoved in their faces? Yeppers. But judging by their reactions, they were into it. I'm a lil concerned since the Calamity campaign Marisha & Travis have been GTA'ing their characters, but in the end as long as they are having fun, it's all good.
@@0saintclark0 I mean not really, it _Feels_ like a lot of time because there was talking but it probably wasn't actually _That_ much time. I mean, Matt is _Super Duper_ Generous with these guys when they won't shut the hell up during a ticking clock, like say the 1 minute resurrection limit that magically expands into 10 minutes of back and forth hand wringing lol. So I think we can extend him the same curtesy for a cool Villain monologue.
@@erikmadgunner3492 despite all of that, it's still a fact that Lilliana used her held action and then used telekinesis immediately after to lift Vax up and place him in the machine. I was honestly surprised nobody shouted out that they were gonna do something at that moment as a reaction.
i was waiting for you to upload this vid. You are one of the only reactors who react to the actual show. and i just needed to see how somebody else reacted to that moment. *CHEFS KISS* Matt Mercer
One of the 3 keys was totally destroyed, one was at least weakened or put out of commission temporarily, and the third had its power supply drastically reduced. I don't see how this could be a victory for the Ruby Vanguard. Hmmm... what do I think. I think the last time a mortal in this world replaced a god, that god's name was forgotten to time and thus could never even be mentioned by name again. So I think if Mercer kills off all the gods in his world and replaces them w/ new entities then he'd have a clean break from D&D's OGL when it comes to using their names like Sarenrae ;) And he could start anew w/ a whole new pantheon of gods.
I feel like Matt purpose-built a min/maxed Ottohan to one-round a shapeshifted Keyleth. Which makes me wonder how this would have played out if the Bells had dropped Ottohan earlier. But also given that Ottohans purpose was essentially already spent after that attack on kiki, I kinda wish Matt’d had Vax come in with an ambush round on her so his badass entrance wasn’t immediately followed by that slightly comical capturing. Think its one of those times where the game mechanics of DnD, in this case the initiative order, gets in the way of story telling since both classic characters did basically nothing beyond show up.
