Today we are taking an introspective look into why we don't film our most popular and best performing videos anymore : "The DIY Dollar Store Challenge". We get asked very often what happened to them, or requests for a new one on the regular. We thought it was about time we addressed why we stopped.

I don’t know, the dollar tree items in my house did hold up. The stuff sold at Target isn’t any better. As long as this is a sincere statement and it’s not just for views that you’re completely not into fast fashion and waste in other ways. I’m so so tired of this culture of no more plastic straws wrapped in paper but instead paper straws wrapped in plastic. I have friends that are constantly buying the latest green item and it’s nonsense and they are often buying into marketing lies.
Honestly, your thrift flip videos and challenges give off the same vibes as the old dollar store videos and are both sustainable and affordable. Thanks for being so considerate and open for change and evolving with time. Love to see you and the channel grow.

As a looong time viewer I really appreciate that you guys no longer glamorize poor quality cheap items, as the end product was something that often would not get a ton of use or life out of it. I love the more zero waste, eco friendly direction you guys have taken!
I think a "scrap bin" for all the bits and pieces that you take off of a project would be good. You could then make a challenge to make something new & usable from the scraps. And maybe a thrift store/facebook marketplace challenge instead of dollar store. I love seeing the eco friendly & zero waste challenges.
The scrap bin idea gives me big time Barney Bag vibes (from Barney and friends), and that was my JAM I am here for it!
Agreed! Although, I’m finding the thrift stores are becoming increasingly more expensive. I actually find dollarstore items at value village for MORE than they are sold for at the dollarstore.
These big brand name thrift stores are seeing an increasing “trend” in thrifting and therefore increasing prices… which is sad.
They're experiencing an increase in sales, therefore their prices increase. Supply and demand, business 101. Can't blame them for that
I love when you find dollar tree items - stuff literally stamped with Greenbrier Inc - at Goodwill and they want $3.99 for a used dollar store item.
@@em0szn yeah, but when I can buy an item BRAND new at a store, or shop the sale sections and buy things for the same price it cheaper as a thrift store I’m going to have to do that.
@Stef exactly! The thing is now, I can often find things on sale and buy them cheaper than the thrift store is selling them for! I just bought an Aritzia golf skirt on sale for $30, and found the same one at value village for $40. 😫
@@em0szn in most cases in stores I'd agree with you but they get all their items donated !!for free!! They have no right to be charging what they do at thrift stores these days. Inflation isn't an excuse because we all know the workers aren't reaping any of the benefits of them charging so much.
Being eco-friendly with previously used/upcycled items is the way to go. Glad you're rethinking what to use in your DIY videos and look forward to watching them.
I appreciate the values you have and I feel similarly. Unfortunately, thrift prices in my city have become a bit ridiculous and the stores are mostly full of junk that is chipped, broken, or stained. Dollar Tree has become a more economical source for things I would have normally thrifted as I plan my wedding and for hobby crafts. I still find the occasional score at the thrift store but I leave empty handed more often than not, scoffing at prices on empty pasta sauce and pickle jars.
Same, and honestly it's almost the entire Southern California thrifting market.
And that's where balance and doing what works for you and your situation come in. 😀👍
Appreciate your thoughts and opinions! As a senior I also realized that many items were not the best price, for instance people were buying toilet paper that was not worth the dollar! Sometimes our mind set was clouded, it’s just a dollar, but a dollar wasted adds up, both from our wallets and environment!
Completely support your stance on the dollar DIYs. You and Becky have such a talent for upcycling thrift store items and those videos are much more interesting. Good on you!
Many times i find items at the 1.25 store for way less money than what they are charging at Thrift stores, Walmart, target, cvs etc… I enjoy diys made from the 1.25 store. If you use a good adhesive the diys last a long time. I have many diys still holding up after making them a few years ago. I would like to see diys made from the 1.25 store. You guys made some great things many could benefit from since inflation is kicking us hard!!!
I've been watching your channel since 2016 (when I was 15... crazy!), and I feel like I've grown right along with you! I've always appreciated that you evolve your thinking, especially around sustainability! Now I work full-time around environmental issues, and I always feel like you all are on top of it! If you have the capacity in the future, doing a series on home electrification could be neat! It's a buzzing topic and I know ya'll would do an amazing job! ❤
I commend y’all for being willing to steer your channel towards a more sustainable direction! There’s so much waste by big corporations. My husband runs a merch company warehouse and it kills me to hear how much is wasted even though they donate a LOT of their items that for whatever reason can’t be sold. I’m personally making changes here at home when able and I think y’all have inspired that change(one of your shorts comes to mind 😊). I don’t mind not seeing those dollar store vids either-I used to frequent there but our last home we sold opened my eyes to just how much stuff got trashed/recycled that I never used for all those craft ideas I had. 😬 I now use the same bday decorations for years-last week I had to recycle a piece that was well over a decade old. 😂 Keep it up, girlies!! Y’all *are* making a difference! ❤
I think Nick Lewis said it best when he was on the financial diet that its cool to see people do DIY decor and be creative, but it can up as disposable decor when using cheaper material. Meanwhile, new furniture is being cycled like fast fashion that sustainability is being challenged in all directions.
The series may be gone but your purchases, stooping, & recycling habits have changed with the changing times. We are more informed than we were years ago and still learning what is safe/harmful to make better choices.

This is one of the things that really connects me to this channel. Although the focus has to be content creation as it’s your business, it’s mindful creation. I have been watching your channel for years now and it has put sustainability unconsciously in my mind at all times which I think is just so valuable. We’ll done team!

I love the shift towards more reused and/or sustainable materials. I try to do the same in my home and love getting inspired by the Sorry Girls. I also love that your DIY skills have evolved so that the projects you create are very good quality and will actually stand the test of time.
I absolutely applaud you for this! I am so tired of dollar store challenges where people take plastic pieces of crap and turn them into slightly different plastic pieces of crap. And you know people are not using that stuff in their homes if they have any other options. I would much much much rather see things that are actually up cycled from the thrift store or things that you have around the house or anything that you can save from going into the trash or landfill. I appreciate you for thinking about this and making a change! 👏👏👏

I’ve found myself a lot more inspired to do diy’s with secondhand items since the Sorry Girls “grew” into this approach. Ive made the most beautiful signage for my wedding by using secondhand mirrors & I even felt inspired to make my own garter with the off cuts from my dress alterations.

I'm so glad you pointed this out, it is hard to find content for decor, beauty, cooking, etc. With a Zero waste or with less waste that is also relatable, fun and thoughtful, it can be very stressful at first to take that step but is amazing to find a community, here at Mexico it's kind of new still so finding your channel has been a breath of fresh air. I 100% started loving your channel due to its upcycling, I love the ethos of finding gems on Facebook marketplace and in thrift stores. I wouldn’t have clicked on if it was a dollar store challenge. But as you said, the times have changed and so have (thankfully) a lot of people’s values ❤

Thank you for advocating for this! I cringe whenever I see dollar store related videos on youtube because I know what that means long term, it's likely headed for the landfill. Your channel proves over and over you can get incredible results by thrifting pretty much anything! Thank you for being transparent about this and following your heart and values!
I really like the evolution of this channel in a more eco-friendly direction. Thrift stores are my go-to for home decor, kitchen items, craft and sewing supplies, and even tools and small appliances. Also, non-fabric furniture, so I don't have to worry about bedbugs. I don't enjoy fast fashion and one-use party supplies, so thanks for shedding the light on the problems with them.

I’m proud that you listened! We all need to change how we look at single use items. I decorate from Goodwill or garage sales. Even for huge events with very fancy centerpieces. And what is created looks amazing! Gives new life. And I often can sell the things I make to use the funds for the next event for the non-profit that benefits.

I had thoughts of commenting to a variety of TH-camrs videos asking what strategies and practices they have when buying things because everything can't be kept every time there is a trip to Ikea and are genuinely interested to understand if things are stored, sold, donated etc. you guys rock!

I’ve already thrifted some beautiful secondhand stuff that I think I can give a new life to with your content as inspiration, but without feeling like I have to buy a ton of stuff that will only get one use and be tossed. This channel has always been a source of inspiration. You’re a big reason why I try to only buy clothes second hand and most things if I can. I think it’s amazing that you stopped making this content that was a great thing for the channel but wasn’t great for your eco friendly brand. I have always tried to be eco friendly but your channel has added so much to my sustainability awareness. And I really appreciate the honesty of this video.
As a long time viewer I don’t even remember having those thoughts seeing those videos which is crazy to think about now. I do believe your skill set as a growing team has grown exponentially but I think it’s really awesome you guys are sticking to what you believe in.
I agree completely! I do also want to say that for some people, including myself, we need our environments to feel comfortable.. ie turning a house (or apartment) into a home to feel at ease in our space, and for some people all they can afford are dollar store items (hopefully they are checking thrift stores and goodwills first!) so I still think your early path can be helpful to inspire creativity with a limited budget, however as people’s situations and circumstances improve I hope they stay mindful and purposeful about the purchases and decor decisions they make. Either to make things seasonal items that they can reuse year after year or making design decisions that are timeless and not going to end up in a landfill.
As a channel of high influence I love that you're not influencing people to overconsume. But I also love that you're not telling people Dollar Tree is bad etc recognising that theres nothing wrong with the average consumer shopping there. The only person to blame for these issues with Dollar Tree, Shein is 1. The companies themselves who are solely responsible for their bad labour ethics/poor use of resources, not its consumers who can't afford otherwise 2. influencers who can afford to not promote these companies and not promote overconsumption, but despite that still promote Shein etc (of which you guys are not!)

I used to be a huge Dollar Tree DIY junkie. I couldn't consume enough content and bought all the things. Then, I realized, I don't have a place for these things in my home. And, sure they can be fun to make, but I don't really want to gift then either. The quality of materials is not what I'd want to gift. I ended up trashing a lot of it once I initially made it and hung onto it for a couple weeks just because I really didn't have a use for it. I realized I needed to slow my roll. I still have a full box of DIY supplies, many from the Dollar Tree. But I think they will be donated as I haven't even looked at them. Makes me feel bad for the waste I created. Thank you for bringing the mindfulness to your channel. And for making us aware that we can get these supplies secondhand rather than support the making of new junk all the time.

Thrifting is the way to go! We do still love a good creative challenge though, a good thrift flip can be ethical even if it's not completely zero waste, but it's AMAZING to see more people be mindful and move away from toxic businesses and practices, not just as consumers, but as citizens.

I've been following the channel for several years now and I think those types of videos represented another era, both in terms of TH-cam and trends. While it is understandable from the sustainable side, we must also recognize that they have grown a lot as DIYers and channel. The tools they have today are partly the result of working on those videos and self-reflecting on the results.

I really like this video! I was looking for a fun hobby and dollar store diy projects seemed to be both cheap and fun but I was having a problem with the quality of the items I found. It’s amazing how different something can look in a video online vs in person. As you said, where you find cost savings, you usually find cost cutting and it’s usually the workers who suffer. So before I find myself tumbling down the rabbit hole of diying, I’ll be searching the local thrift stores and garage sales. Thank you for the insight!

I love the change you made in the channel. Unfortunately we don't have thrift stores as big as you have there here in Brazil, but I love to give a new use to something that would go to the trash, repurpose itens, change furniture with a new coat of paint, etc
Glad you ditched the dollar stores. 😀I check thrift stores, Facebook marketplace, and Buy Nothing before heading to stores when I need something. Precycling is at the core of anything I accumulate. So is safe disposal. (I wish your videos would show how to safely dispose of things like paint and ways to clean rollers without washing the paint down the drain.) ♥
As a long-time viewer, I like the fact you grew with us, you guys really did! like you said we want ethical QUALITY stuff around us. Many of us were young and waned that in the moment now that we are older we don’t want cheap-looking things no matter what bracket you fit in to 😌

I still buy party or holiday decorations from the dollar store (for my workplace) but take the time to create more long-lasting pieces like garlands than can be used year after year. I also usually mix materials from the thrift store and/or items I already have.

We've all grown up and become more sustainable. Great idea to make this video and I love the regular remarks about sustainability sprinkled into your videos. We just need to be mindful and try to make the better choice when we can. Your videos can inspire those who are struggling to know where to start and help change their mindset.

I get so tired of dollar store this and that it’s very limiting in what can be made that others on TH-cam have repeated themselves with the same craft etc. repurposing materials used items from thrift stores or on the street are more inspiring to me. Thank you for all you shared

I actually work at a building materials/furniture store stocked with exclusively landfill-diverted material, so I know incredible things are possible with secondhand material! Go TSG!

I’ve never cared about sustainability until watching your channel! I now try to buy second hand as often as I can, and reuse as much as I can. I love the dollar stores but this video totally puts things into perspective for how wasteful simple crafts and things like that from the dollar store can be. Seeing y’all do zero/ low waste projects is not only sustainable but shows viewers how to be crafty on a low budget! It’s motivating!

Ladies I just saw your video sorry I missed all your challenges but I would like to say that please don’t stopping making the DIY challenges completely because you tried ways to show new ideas on how to transfer items into other things. I applaud you all for your efforts. It’s a new year to start by doing new challenges buying item from goodwill or the flea market by making it into useable items. Also you can acquire a lot pieces you can purchase from retail store by using new items that maybe on clearance in order to save $$ and waste. Ladies please don’t let a few comments stop you from being creative. I can’t wait to see what you all have come up with 😊

I know nobody cares, but I personally enjoy watching themed thrift store diy videos just as much as dollar store diys!! I just like the idea of going in without knowing what exactly you’re going to make and then watching what you guys think of and what items you consider/pass on.

As a long time subscriber I've been impressed with the commitment the team has to increasing sustainability. I think a way to up that is to include more social sustainability things as well. I absolutely LOVED the Abiona Centre transformation and that sort of DIY flip makes the most sense with the ethos of y'all's company. Y'all are in a very unique and important position to teach folks how to be good at doing good.
I loved the series when it was going on cuz you both are awesome and creative but I agree in this natural progression towards more environmentally mindful ways. We know a lot more now and how you are choosing different ways to create is inspiring. I love the current content going on, its progressive, mindful and well styled!

love this, it’s thoughtful and honest! I get a thrill when I can use up all the “insert craft supply”.
For myself, I try to adhere to a crafting standard. If the finished product isn't at least good enough that I would buy it second hand if I saw it somewhere, then it's not worth doing in the first place.
That includes the back and bottom of the item. I always go the extra mile and completely finish things like I expect from store bought things. I think this creates less waste in the long haul.
I love the idea of making usable items from trash. I would love to see all the cardboard we are all acquiring from online purchases, being reused. I would like to see furniture made, especially.

I was one of those subscribers who came via those dollar store diy videos! I found them inspirational, but my automatic thought was 'I'll see what I can find in the charity shop' as have been living as sustainably as I can for several years. It really helped seeing your creative content for inspiration though! I'd love to do a 'thrift store' upcycle diy challenge with a friend!

This is such a good point. I appreciate you listening closely to feedback (even if not the majority), reflecting, raising this issue, and encouraging us to reflect as well. Upon my own reflection, I recall I’d often think “oh that’s clever.. but it’d look cheap in my home despite best efforts” when I see these kinds of videos on YT, so I agree it’s fun & relatable but ultimately wasteful.
Moving forward, I’d love to see a revamped series with thrift stores or FB Marketplace, but primarily with commonly-found items so it still has the relatable & accessible angle of the original dollar store series. (Though some one-off eps with wild or unusual finds could be fun every now and then!)

I am a quilter, and most of my fabrics come from garage sales and thrift stores. I have even purchased 100% cotton like new condition clothing at thrift stores to use in my quilts. When I do a practice piece to improve my skills, I turn that piece into something useful. I hate wasting what can be repurposed.
So pleased with this video. Your attitude towards waste and sustainability reaches so many. Intentional purchasing is a lesson we all need to take to heart. I have been guilty in the past of picking up cute things because they were cheap, they usually don’ t stand the test of time and end up donated or thrown out. I choose to not make fluff purchases anymore, will this purchase be something I need or enrich my life or will it be just stuff/ clutter. Thank you for this video.
