38k is expensive! E36 m3s are meant to be driven. I daily drove my Hellrot 95. Such a great car for the money. Paid $4500 for a 2 owner zero accident car with 180k miles. These cars last forever with proper maintenance.
Chris, thanks for your transparency and having the courage to tell everyone what you paid for your car and how many miles it had on it when you bought. This info can really help buyers and sellers accurately value their car, yet at same time this info is often hard to find. Keep posting more great videos!
That Estoril E36 has probably $10k+ of work done to it with the 6 speed, Z3 steering rack, cooling modernization, and Dinan suspension. It's in a different market than a mostly stock example. If you want to compare market values, search the VIN and see what it sold at Barret Jackson before the updates.
Someone has too much money. Both are BEAUTIFUL cars but you’re correct on the value. It just tells me that I will keep my 2006 E46 and continue to baby it and polish it often!
Hey Chris! What do you think of a Black/Black e36 4dr manual with 56k miles? A worthwhile spec? Or would that red 2dr that Lux is selling in New York be a better investment?
Love your vid-I collect and rebuild/restore BMW's. Its fun and I always watch what the values are based on an honest evaluation of the current market and where I think it will be in years ahead. I have noticed that mileage in age 15-20 yrs is important, after that it becomes considerably less so and more so about the shape of the car.
My 1997 Dakar sedan manual that I sold not that long ago was a 1 of 77 North American car and I guarantee that it is the finest Dakar sedan example in the country. It had 102k miles when I sold it so yes high miles but I got under 20k for mine. I have watched the e36 market a lot and you are 100% correct that this is a one off sale. I have sellers remorse though. I miss my E36.
Lord Roo We are talking factory original examples here and the resale market on them. Not modded machines. Best example “in my opinion” is factory condition and the overall care of the vehicle. That’s why I claimed that for mine. To each there own though.
BaT is a great service. As a Seller (sold 2 cars there) it's an amazing bargain - $99 each. As a Buyer, there is still a TON of value even in paying the 5% fee (capped at $5k). You get to interact with the Seller and have the nearly limitless input from the community - many of whom know more about a given car than you will ever hope to. Factor the fee into your upper bid limit on the car and don't whine about it. Also worth noting, BaT shoots down TONS of cars that want to be listed. I'm not saying every example is top-notch but they do their best to present interesting lots and it saves me hours and hours of scouring other sites for potential bargains which usually end up being scams or basket-cases anyway. Point is, don't hate on BaT for their successful business model.
I applaud any business model that can make money. That's BaT. I just find their product to offer very little other products offer for pennies on the dollar. In other words I find BaT greatly overpriced as a buying tool. As a selling tool not so much.
I know this may be sacrilegious on this channel but I was wondering if any of the 10-15 yr old American sports cars are good investments. ZO6’s, GT500’s, etc... good to see you back. Thanks.
I want everyone to get a better deal than I did. Doesn't always work out that way but that shouldnt stop us from discussing ways to give us the best chance to buy smart. Penny-wise is a recurring theme of the channel -- including vehicles Ive never owned. But referencing one I have seems wholly appropriate.
I got mine from bosses wife about 6 yrs ago. '97 cosmos black/black sedan auto, about 120k miles. I saw wife drive it like a creampuff for years, don't know how it was driven before that BUT all original auto sedan in great condition, prolly 7.5-8/10, in a nice color combo (my opinion). Boss man was askin like 7k, I low balled at 2500, he laughed in my face and a week later took 3k. Car was dirty and in serious need of detail but pretty much was waaay better condition I even thought it was. I've put couple thousand miles on since and acquired a complete wrecked sedan parts car with 5 speed. Will do that conversion eventually. At the time I was just low ballin to see if I could get it for dirt cheap, didn't really want it, but I got it now. No idea what my example would sell for currently but pretty sure a hell of a lot more than I paid for it. That's why I started watchin these e36 videos, thinkin "if I took the time to detail it like this (like Chris), how nice would the end result be. Well I haven't done it, maybe soon.
I bought my 1998 M3 sedan, 5 speed manual with 196k miles for $5,000 3 months ago and the car runs like a champ! The U.S. spec has a less high-strung engine that is cheaper to maintain. 200k miles is not a big deal on these cars. My M3 is super-solid so don't let high mileage scare you.
Other than that car's color being rare, I'm not sure why everyone thinks it's so desirable. It's not a great shade of blue IMO. I've heard it referred to as "Loser Blue" in other circles. It does have the low miles going for it, but that's a double edged sword that collectors don't address. Cars that sit degrade, i.e. rubber seals, tires, fluids, etc. Does it have maintenance records to show the cooling system components have been addressed? Plus it's a sedan. Not as desirable as the coupes. A 6-speed is great in theory, but the 5-speeds weren't a problem in the first place, so why even do it other than just to increase pissing distance? Means nothing to me. I don't think that car is a real good guage as to your car's value considering you have the better color and the original hardware. BaT/auction environment probably brought that high price. I don't think it's even worth that in today's market.
The BaT car was very Frankenstein and had paint work. I have no earthly idea how it pulled so much $$. The color (Estoril) is very desirable and the mileage super low but still... My '98 M3 'vert is very nearly stock and only 67k miles. I hope I never sell it!
I think the sedans are going to be more desirable. The DTM cars were sedans.... and hellrot red is badass! I would take that over estoril anyday, you got a good buy! I have 270K miles on my 328i and she still purrs and pulls hard.
Would much rather the Hellrot/Black combo with the original five speed vs. a swapped Estoril/Dove car with lower miles. Could easily see your car pulling a similar premium solely for the fact it has black interior and an original five speed. My 5 speed Estoril/Mulberry (darker grey) sedan is sitting at 177k miles and I couldn't see it pulling even 9k right now, regardless of how clean/well kept it is, and I bought it for $5,500 at 159k miles about two years ago. Don't ever see myself selling the car as I bought it to be a daily driver, and not a financial investment lol. Keep your car. It'll be worth a hefty premium pretty soon, in my opinion lol.
yankees got a 328is badged as a m3 , nothing like the real deal. its a shit car which doesnt deserve the m3 badge, your better off waiting till 2022 when you can import the real don daddy e36 m3 evolution 3.2 s50b32

I can pick up a M3 on craigslist right now for anywhere from $4,000-$25,000 the market on these cars are sooooo weird

Thank you sir!
Is a 97 me sedan hellrot with black interior clean title ONE owner with 105k miles. But its automatic. Is 9k worth it?

Are you going to bring back episodes of "Quest for perfection" ? That is only thing i wanna see :)

Excellent contender. Basically same as mine (mileage too) but black. I like the 4drs myself -- see much less of them.
He over paid for the blue one by Lot. The fact that it’s originally an automatic kills it. You are in the right place with your car.

would you put vader seats in your car? also would you put a euro spec steering wheel?
i have both in my 95 avus m3. Both wonderful. A set of clean electric vaders and a euro 3 spoke fresh wheel with tricolor stitching

I have a 1997 estroil coupe with dove grey and 5 speed, I am currently looking for a sedan M3 e36, I want to have both.
Estoril is a great color - one of my favs. Not so easy to find. Seen it on a few E46s as well.

Thanks man

I just bought a 4-door m3 with 17k miles, ivory interior
Hope you done a rod bearing service on your e46 m3
Kaboom ! 💣
Lord Roo
What exactly is a rod bearing “service?” I’m genuinely curious.
Pick up my friends techno violet e36 m3 with Modena interior and luxury package. Didn’t pay that much.

Love Estoril, so much so that if I ordered a new Porsche, Id try to get it paint to sample in Estoril.
