I remembering my mother's ironing routine in the 50's. She "sprinkled" each garment with water, rolled it up and put it in a large plastic bag. The sprinkler she used was a bottle with a cap that had multiple holes in it, designed just for wetting clothes.
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been ironing my husband shirts for many years, but today I thought I would look up the proper way and I came across your video. I’ve been doing most of the steps in proper order, but your tips really helped me and it sped up the process.
My mother moistened shirts before ironing. She used a spray bottle with olain water and put the shirts in a plastic bag in the fridge for a while before ironing. Easier to iron that way
How I hate ironing. Tomorrow, I have a job interview and I thought to check you out on properly iron a dress shirt because you are the best, but I am so discouraged. I hope to be soon capable to pay somebody to do my ironing. Or find a partner kind enough to help me out 😄
My goodness! I have been ironing shirts my whole life and do a pretty good job, but you have just taught an old dog quite a few new tricks! Thank you so much. Will you allow me a few added suggestions for beginners? Dry the shirt by hanging it on a PLASTIC hanger. Ironing between buttons? Yes, but don't forget after you have ironed all of them between, to slide the iron all the way up the outside edge and all the way up inside the buttons to smooth out the button area. Lots of people forget that final button area smoothing. That omission makes the button area look buckled up. One other suggestion: your ironing of any clothing will go better if you very first iron the INSIDE of the heavy linings: Turn the article inside out and iron all the loose pocket linings flat and smooth. the back of the buttonhole placket, the back of the waistband and zipper placket, the back of the collar support, the back of the cuff lining for sleeves and pants. Those areas also tend to be damper, so the first-off ironing helps to dry them out, and that supports a smoother and easier passage for the iron when you start the front OUTSIDE. When ironing collar corners, check your heat setting, so that you don't scorch the corners right off the bat! So annoying! Start ironing at that corner and move up the collar to the middle, then move to the other corner point and up to the middle, then iron the middle area so you have a smooth collar. If you start in the middle of the collar and move down to the corner point, you may end up with extra fabric wrinkles! Oh no! If you note the collar or armpits are stained, spray them with stain remover and throw the shirt back in the hot water wash. Do NOT iron it or you will set those stains. My order is this: iron inside plackets and heavy seams, iron sleeves and cuffs, iron the neck and collar, then iron the body of the shirt, hold, and turn to inspect. Also, begin ironing on the left seam of the body and work from the front of the article all the way around if you are right-handed. If left-handed, start at the right side seam. If the pocket linings are loose, you can pull them out of the way as you iron so that you don't get a line on the outside of the fabric. If you are ironing a shirt with front buttons, start at the right side and work your way around the back to the left front side. That way you don't get confused about where you are on the article. When you finish, hold the clothing up and take a look at it. You may need to smooth the front again where it got a little wrinkled as you turned it on the board. Pants always need to be smoothed out again across the tummy. The most difficult thing is chest pockets where the outside layer is slightly larger than the body of the shirt layer. Pull the pocket to one side and iron, and then to the other side to iron. You will avoid a crease at one of the pocket side seams that way. I have never heard of any necessity of ironing sleeves without a top crease, but to each his own. Your shirt looks great! If for any reason you just feel physically uncomfortable ironing, try turning your board to face the other way and adjust the height. (Take the iron off the board before you do that or CRASH! LOL!) Does that help? Clean the iron base plate regularly, because stuff builds up and that can ruin the article immediately, forcing you to throw it back in the wash! Arrgghh! Yes, you can clean the ironing board cover by just throwing it in the wash -ALONE! If you get board marks on your fabric thru the ironing board cover, use a bath towel or two as a lining over the board and under the board cover before tying on the board cover.
Learned how to press my cloths in the Marine Corps. 21 years and many special assignments, I think I do a pretty good job ironing. Would always tell Marines that did a poor job of ironing that they have summer creases. Some are going that way and some are going the other way.. I iron all my button up shorts and t-shirts I wear away from the home. I guess it’s my Marine Corps OCD!

I taught myself how to iron at a young age - because I liked clothes that looked neat. After the age of 12 I had no mother - so I did everything for myself and younger brother. Trial and error and practice does make perfect. I observed how other clothes looked on people and saw where the creases where and used my very practical brain. But did someone actually "teach" me...? No. I observe sometimes and then - just did. I also taught myself to sew and bake. Some people are capablle of teaching themselves you know... and no - I had no mother, and raised by a single working father, so - no. I had no mother to teach me. I got better in high school in dressamking classes, but I already could iron well by then! Some people are better at learning life skills on the run than others. Dont assume.
A+ for using a clapper and sleeve board, but you should never press your garments on the right side of the fabric. This is because contact pressing can create unwanted sheen, especially on mixed fabrics, ironing inside out hides this and keeps your clothing looking newer.
I love this! I watched before doing my ironing and it has never felt so easy and successful. I really appreciate his attention to detail and pride in a perfect result.
This is for cotton white dress shirts. Take shirts out of washer. Put on hangers and let dry at room temp until almost dry. Then start to iron. I put my shirts in the dryer on low heat for a few minutes. It helps some wrinkles fall out and leaves shirts at the perfect degree of dampness. Never let them sit in washer after cycle!
Thank you. I was never formally taught to iron. Ijust watched y father iron his uniforms. He took forever and I take forever. They teach ironing in Home ed. At least in Wyomig, where it is assumed everybody is a cowboy in and change their shirt from the age of 3 🙄 All the older generation complaind how the younger generation doesn't iron. But what the older generation fails to realize is that their parents took the time to teach them, their generation didn't not teach most basic life skills because they expect the education system to teach their children necessary skills. That's solid parenting 😄
It's quicker to iron one side of the front from bottom-to-top, the pull the shirt around the top of the ironing board and across the yoke, then continue down the other side of the front. When done with the front, pull the shirt over the edge to iron the back. There is a lot of time saved positioning the shirt if you follow this order, especially if you're doing several at one time.
I learned how to iron in basic training for the army. If they taught your method I must have missed more than I thought, as I have been doing it backwards for 35 years.. I will need to watch this a couple more times to get rid of some other bad habits that might be lurking around.

No one else liked it, so I decided to use my free time to do what I do well and with pride, ironing!
Dear raphael, Could you make a video about finding second hand clothes online ? Good sites, good places you visited and so forth... I lost my father and have to support my family, I’m 21 and have not enough money but have HUGE PASSION for clothes. High end and casual things. Thank you !
Thank you and most informative. I actually love to iron my shirts but was getting the order wrong. I also use a little spray starch on my collars. Another great video though and enjoy them all.
My Scottish mother would spritz the clothes, put them in a plastic bag and leave them in the fridge for as much as a day or two. They iron out perfectly that way!
My problem is getting the shoulder area nice and smooth. I usually start with the collar, then the cuffs, sleeves, then one side of the front over to the back and then the other side of the front. After this I'll touch up the shoulder areas. Great advice for all the small details- no dryer, check for stains, ironing when damp, better spray bottle.
When I'm really in a hurry and I know I'll wear a jacket over it I'll only iron the front of the shirt to perfection. The rest may have some wrinkles left but I don't really care because you can't see them
Eh, sorry to interrupt. Mother here. High spins do not cause creases. Over loading the washing machine causes more creases. When you remove clothing from the machine hold the clothing tightly at the shoulders or waist band and give it good flick. Once should do it. You can use the tumble dryer. Use a cool setting. Do not overload the dryer. Lastly remove clothing from dryer one at a time. Flick out as before. Hang on a hanger right away. You will have no creases or rinkles. A quick run over with the iron is all that's needed. Bless you all. Some women take being a mother seriously.
I have been working at the cleaners for 19 years in California. I wish I have chance to make videos to show how to press shirts and take care your own clothes (professionally) at home for anyone who wants to save money from bringing clothes to the dry cleaners
Good thing Sven was ironing light-colored fabrics in this video. His rubbing technique is the best way polish your fabrics to a brilliant shine!! Think of your technique this way... "Iron" is a noun, "press" is a verb. You want to smooth then press your fabric moving the iron slowly over the fabric. Ideally, use a pressing cloth of 100% cotton or linen (Some people swear by silk organza but it doesn't tolerate the higher temps that cotton or linen do.). NO SYNTHETIC fibers in your cloth! A good, old well-laundered men's white handkerchief is great option. Smooth out your shirt fabric, place the pressing cloth on it, spritz the cloth with water from a spray bottle and then PRESS the fabric. A too-hot iron and friction are the surest ways to quickly gain a wardrobe of fine POLISHED cotton! PRESS DON'T IRON!
I figured out: collar first, sleeves, back shoulder part, 1/2 front, back panel, 2/2 front, then end on the collar again and front neck area. So you end on the part that you want the most flat as it's the first part seen. Sleeves get creased anyway so it's ok to get those done first, as you might put creases in as you move the shirt around to iron other areas. My method is for a quick iron, not for a perfectly sartorial look like in the video, just a quick business shirt iron when you're short on time.
This should be taught in schools all over the world.

I've been ironing my own kit since I was 15. I'm now 57. This all appears to be a bit OTT, imo. This makes ironing look hard work.
This is absolutely arduous, I got an Elna press and it looks professional grade in a fraction of the time with way less steps. So glad I’m finished with this 😮💨
Keeping a wardrobe in good order with airing, brushing and ironing is a very satisfying hobby, I get compliments all the time for my groomed look, which includes my hair 😊
I can’t get over the fact that he looks so much like G-Eazy 😄🤦🏼♀️
Excellent info! Thanks much.
Learnt it the hard way but for most living in India the task is outsourced to the street iron man.
Who else hates ironing?
Testify! It's the bane of my life. It takes me at least 20 minutes per shirt. In youtube land it apparently takes 90 seconds.
Conor O'Reilly I can relate, 20 minutes x20 shirts every week! 😭
Trey Terronez I hated ironing but had to do it when I was starting out. I had no money. Now the dry cleaner picks it up.
I love it, it's soothing and so satisfying to see how lovely the garment looks when I'm done
I always ironed all my clothes after laundry night in college. My roommates even paid me a bit in food or snacks to iron their shirts for them because I was always crisp and sharp with every outfit I took to lectures. No one else liked it, so I decided to use my free time to do what I do well and with pride, ironing!
Your ironing is amazing.
I got some valuable tips. Thank you.
Dear raphael,
Could you make a video about finding second hand clothes online ? Good sites, good places you visited and so forth...
I lost my father and have to support my family, I’m 21 and have not enough money but have HUGE PASSION for clothes. High end and casual things.
Thank you !
L 3:12 I would love to show you a video
Thank you and most informative. I actually love to iron my shirts but was getting the order wrong. I also use a little spray starch on my collars. Another great video though and enjoy them all.
It's really something like an art.
My wife has found this really helpful, thanks sir.
He's real IRON MAN
Man of knowledge. Thank you Rafael
THE WAY THIS MAN IRONS - MAKES MY IRON STEEL
Thanks and God bless you.
Great job. Love your channel ❤ keep up good work.
What!!?? There is a sleeveboard!!?? 😱I always wondered how you properly iron sleeves. I LOVE this video. Thank you!
My Scottish mother would spritz the clothes, put them in a plastic bag and leave them in the fridge for as much as a day or two. They iron out perfectly that way!
How do you iron your dress shirts? What is your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge is the shirt collar
My problem is getting the shoulder area nice and smooth. I usually start with the collar, then the cuffs, sleeves, then one side of the front over to the back and then the other side of the front. After this I'll touch up the shoulder areas.
Great advice for all the small details- no dryer, check for stains, ironing when damp, better spray bottle.
Cuffs areas are the toughest for me if they have buttons and stiches.
When I'm really in a hurry and I know I'll wear a jacket over it I'll only iron the front of the shirt to perfection. The rest may have some wrinkles left but I don't really care because you can't see them
steaming iron mostly but will use it on the board if I need to iron down parts like collars.
Wonderful job and professional
valuable information! I learn a couple of new ideas and tips every vid. Thanks Sven.
Whoaaaa your Accent is so strong.... dass ich Deutsch nur vom zuhören gelernt habe!
Fantastic video and series! Thank you. One question, how do you know when to actually use the steam and spray bottle?
Eh, sorry to interrupt.
Mother here.
High spins do not cause creases. Over loading the washing machine causes more creases.
When you remove clothing from the machine hold the clothing tightly at the shoulders or waist band and give it good flick.
Once should do it.
You can use the tumble dryer. Use a cool setting.
Do not overload the dryer.
Lastly remove clothing from dryer one at a time.
Flick out as before.
Hang on a hanger right away.
You will have no creases or rinkles.
A quick run over with the iron is all that's needed.
Bless you all.
Some women take being a mother seriously.
lol... and never forget that creases in the sleeves are regarded as a bit common..

Thanks for the detailed video,
I have been working at the cleaners for 19 years in California. I wish I have chance to make videos to show how to press shirts and take care your own clothes (professionally) at home for anyone who wants to save money from bringing clothes to the dry cleaners
Thank you very much, this has really helped me 🙏💚
Good thing Sven was ironing light-colored fabrics in this video.
Do the yoke first or you will wrinkle the shirt.
