  • This lens is the renewed version of a very popular, super compact and lightweight pancake lens the was released years ago.
    This new version is weather sealed and has the aperture ring, both very welcome additions, but what else has changed since?
    Let's find out if this lens is worth the upgrade from the previous version.
    My review of the previous version of this lens is by far the most viewed video on my channel, you can find it here:

    This is the review that I have been waiting for, unbiased and straight to the point. I just bought the 1st gen last year. I got tempted to get the 2nd gen but after seeing this I am keeping my old one. Thank you.

    I fell in love the 27mm lens after 5 minutes of use. I got it by mistake thinking it was the R WR lens, didn't read the info good enough when I bought it and thought now what do I do. I wanted the Aperture function. After finding out it works from the camera dial, I'm totally happy with it. Cheaper too.

    Nice photos. I just got the lens today and i dont mind the focus noise, but I have to say I’m not liking the autofocus so much. It takes long to focus in my opinion and that won’t work when I’m mostly using it to take family photos or just my kids in general. So far, it hast been focusing great. Maybe that’s because it’s a rainy day and I’ve only used it inside. Also, it’s my first pancake lens ever for my xt20. I thought it would be smaller and seems heavier than the camera? I don’t know. So far, those are my first impressions. Hopefully it does well tomorrow in my son’s baseball game.

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not a super fast focusing lens, that's for sure, and the xt20 doesn't have the same af of the more modern cameras, but you'll enjoy it anyways

    Recently picked up this lens, primarily for the aperture ring. I had the previous version and found it ideal for my type of street photography. With adequate sunlight set the aperture at f16, with auto ISO and shutter speed. Zone focus at 10 feet and you won't miss anything. With a little practice hip shooting is quite easy for discrete capture and an interesting perspective.

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I almost never use zone focusing as I like to play with depth of field, but I'm sure that approach works brilliantly

    Fuji must have been reading my mind. I was dreaming of a 27 mm with aperture ring for my X-Pro3. Bought the X-E4 as a bonus (as an upgrade from X-E2s) for the tilting screen. Sold the v.1 XF 27 already. Will test them both when leaves come out and bird photography slows down.

    All I hear people say about the new 27mm is how slow the AF is on it...they should come try my 23mm f2 Leica lens because THAT thing is slow. The AF I'm seeing in your video demonstration looks really fast on the 27mm!

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is decently fast, but other lenses are definitely faster. That's the reason why you hear that kind of comment. I am aware of terribly slow AF lenses (the 60mm macro being one of them)

    You have a good eye. As for 40mm, somehow I can’t get used to it, preferring either 35 or 50mm - but one of these days…
    Maybe the Fuji 27mm will draw me over the line.

    I really enjoyed the first gen of the XF27. It has its own charm and the form factor is great. That said I opted to sell it and keep my KamLan 28 F1.4 - which if you like this focal length is a spectacular manual lens with close focusing, solid build and excellent contrast. Even without the auto focus ability I find it more versatile and the longer length more ergonomic for focus/aperture control. However for size and weight the 27mm is hard to beat.

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for sharing your opinion. For myself I still prefer autofocus lenses over manual lenses unless it is super wide angle. For the way I shoot it is "mandatory".
      I tried several manual lenses, but depot the quality I always got back to autofocus lenses.
      However I understand why many people enjoy manual focusing for street or similar.

    Thank. I have the MK1 but thought the MK2 might have improved the AF speed and hunting noise so you saved me the upgrade. I think that I might actually need a quicker lens entirely in the situation where I think this struggles rather than an upgrade of the same model. Thanks.

    Just a correction. Aperture control with E4 us not a problem either. Yes E4 has only one dial ring in front, but you can use it for 2 seperate functions. When you press the dial ring it shifts between aperture control and exposure compassion. I have been using it that way with old 27mm without any problem.

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but more cumbersome than having either the rear dial out the lens aperture ring.

    • @aycangonenc
      @aycangonenc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LucaPetraliaPhotography Well you can leave the front dial on aperture control forever and just use the physical exp comp for the exposure. And it is the same amount of work then.

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends. It may not be such a big deal for your way of shooting. It is all subjective. And a lot depends on whether you already have a fuji camera or not, because if you don't, you don't have a muscle memory to build from scratch.
      I'd say enjoy your camera, it's a great little jewel

    excellent review and beautiful photographs, thank you! Question: switching from SLR to rangefinder style (xpro3 drew me with design, but for budget reasons and also size, thinking to start wtih Xe4 and buy lenses). Was going to start with 35 f.2 , as, If I only have one lens to start, it seems most versatile (I shoot, street, landscapes, portraits, and always defaulted to the full frame 50mm). But because this lens (27,2.8) is packaged at such a good price, I'm hesitating. Thoughts? Thanks.

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's hard to tell. Both lenses are great for photography, and I guess it depends on what focal length you will be more comfortable with.
      Don't forget you have a cheaper version of the 35mm F2 you can buy, with the same image quality of the 35mm xf but plasticky body and without aperture ring

    hello, great video as always. How does it compare - òptically / AF wise - to the MK I version?
    For me the aperture ring is not paramount as I am shooting with XPRO2 and don´t need it to be weather sealed. Is it worth to save some money and get the MK 1 instead for 200euro?
    thanks!

    Good review, spot on with information. I have both the 27mm pancake version 1 and 2 so can agree with what is said. The aperture ring is important to me but having just received the lens find it quite loose, do you find this to be the case?

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I think mine is right. It is not super stiff, but it's not like the one on the Zeiss 12mm that I could move with my mind.

    Hello Luca, I have this lens on order, do I need it? no, but I want to add it to my collection, I have the f/2 primes (16, 23, 35, 50) and I’m sure that if I take one or two steps forward with the 23 I’ll get similar results, using this pancake lens on the X-T4 (the one that i have) does not make it a much smaller package for street photography, it makes more sense on a smaller camera like the one you’re showing. Having the aperture ring is a must for me, I wouldn't even consider it if it didn't have it. Changing the subject, I like your photos, very nice captures, I have a question about the church photo (@10:07), was it hand held or on a tripod?

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All hand held, no tripod in this shooting.
      For the lens, I had the 23mm f2 and I ended up selling it because I found myself reaching out to the 27mm instead of the 23mm every time

    Need advice. my current setup is fuji Xt100 with the xf 18-55mm f2.8 and it is big heavy. the body itself is already heavy. I was thinking of either getting the 23mm f2 or the 27mm f2.8. the 23mm caught my eyes because of the f2. while the 27mm caught my eyes because of its small size but I already have f2.8 on my kitlens. do you think getting the 27mm is an upgrade or is it just as same as the kitlens?

    • @LucaPetraliaPhotography
      @LucaPetraliaPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's gonna be different. Optically the 27 is good, a bit better than the 18-55, but what makes a huge difference is its portability.
      I preferred the 27 over the 23mm F2.

    Geesh what a lazy and overpriced update. I had hopes for this lens but not updating the ancient AF motors makes it a poor value and unusable for me. The only reason it gets away with the price is that it's the only 27mm on the market. I'd love to have a 27mm instead of my 23mm and 33mm.
    Good review.

  • @robertoposa1120

    O man if this new version is like the old then I cannot understand why they made a new version, because the most essential point on af lens is it how it focusses and the old is a pure disaster - not only the worst fuji lens but the worst I ever had. I is a pitty they cannot make a better pancake lense. In low light and on difficult uniform surfaces it just doesn‘t focus. Sorry as much I love some other fujinon lenses but not the 27 mm
