Marlene Dietrich - Falling In Love Again

  • It's Eighties and More... and this is the more. Found this hidden on one of my videotapes. Didn't know where or when it was from, but found it is from An Evening With Marlene Dietrich.
    From wiki:
    Alexander H. Cohen, who had produced Dietrich's successful Broadway runs of her one-woman show in 1967 and 1968, suggested a television version of her show.
    Dietrich would receive a fee of $250,000 for her participation in the project. It was said at the time that this was the highest one-shot fee ever paid to a performer to appear on television. After two airings (one in the UK and one in the US), the copyright on the show would revert to Dietrich.
    Dietrich-wary of television as a medium-insisted that the show be filmed in a legitimate theatre in Europe, to best capture her act and audience reaction thereto. The New London Theatre in London was chosen as location for filming, although the theatre would still be under construction at the time of filming. (The theatre would only officially open the following year.)
    Lighting designer Joe Davis was brought in to recreate Dietrich's stage lighting and designer Rouben Ter-Arutunian designed a set featuring scrims and incorporating a Dietrich sketch by René Bouche. Dietrich's costumes were by Jean Louis, and Stan Freeman conducted the orchestra, using orchestrations of the Dietrich repertoire by Burt Bacharach.
    Taping took place on November 23 and November 24, 1972. Dietrich gave two complete shows to non-paying, invitee-only audiences. Shots of Dietrich interacting with the audience were also taped at the end of the second concert. She also shot retakes of "Lili Marlene" and "Falling in Love Again (Can't Help It)" (the latter both in English and German) sans audience against a black velour backdrop to facilitate a post-production split-screen montage of her singing beside old black and white stills from the 1930s and 1940s. The best selections from the various tapings would be combined to form the final, one-hour long special.

      Please don't forget that the present becomes the past and the future becomes the present ... only the ever passing time can surely answer the ultimate questions: will music evolve and can singers ever match this golden era of pristine quality !

    I SAW HER in 1968 in LA's Music Center! Front row balcony. I will never forget seeing her bathed in only a dark spot around her. I think for "Where Have All The Flowers Gone." Anti-war ballad written by Pete Seeger in 1955. STUNNING.

      Some people are actors/actresses, some singer, and *some* performers. Marlene is the latter of the three. She's 'performing' the song so to speak. If you want to see one of the greatest actresses and singers and performers, watch "The Man That Got Away," by Judy Garland from the 1950s film, _"A Star Is Born" (1954)_

    She cannot bend over to pick up the flowers people are throwing to her. She is about 70 years old here. It's very touching when a woman in the audience figures it out and hands her some flowers. You can see Marlene really loves the flowers.

      It's hard for her to bend over -- no disrespect -- because she was sewn into her gowns at that time. True.

    • @amberc5884
      @amberc5884 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Exactly, she could not bend over not because of age but because of the construction of her gown. She was a perfectionist in her on stage appearance, she is wearing very tight girdle type undergarments and she sewn into her gown. Age has nothing to do with it. Anyway she was amazing:)

    This was from Marlene Dietrich's TV Special "I Wish You Love" (also known as "An Evening with Marlene Dietrich"), filmed in England in late 1972 and broadcast in early 1973. It was not really part of a tour, but a special performance especially filmed for television. The audience was all invited guests who did not pay to get in. Dietrich disliked this television special; she felt that it wasn't as good or as spontaneous as her "real" live shows were. Most music and theatre critics who saw her perform on other occasions agree with her. But this is the primary record we have of her concert career, which lasted from 1954 to 1975. Born in 1901, this was filmed just days before her 71st birthday.

    Grace is a unique virtue to possess. It allows a woman to be under great strain, and no one is the wiser, yet she endures. It allows a woman to be gentle and kind to complete strangers, while maintaining a feminine composure, when others are loud and boisterous! It's the real beauty and strength within...Marlene had it!
