    Surgeons don't always have a clear-cut answer..
    In the United Kingdom, guidelines from the National Institute of Health & Care Excellence, or NICE, recommend that 95% of hip replacements should last at least 10 years:
    www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ta30...
    So, if you have a hip replacement at the average age of 68yrs, you can expect a greater than 9 out of 10 chance that your joint will still be in place and working reasonably well when you're 78yrs old.
    Revision surgery is far from straightforward: it takes longer and is more complicated than first time joint replacement, and can involve complications; things can go wrong.
    A recent piece of research looked at how the Charnley hip replacement - one of the first types to work really well - fared in patients having hip replacement at different ages:
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
    Although this isn't an implant that's used that much anymore this paper gives us a good guide as to what to expect. On average, patients who had:
    - Hip replacement under the age of 50yrs = 35% or about a 1 in 3 chance of revision in their lifetime;
    - Hip replacement between 50 and 59yrs = 20% or 1 in 5 chance of revision;
    - Hip replacement between 60 to 69yrs = 9% or about 1 in 10 chance of revision; and
    - Hip replacement over 70yrs = 5% or 1 in 20 chance of revision in their lifetime.
    Recent developments in both the design and materials used to make hip replacements; particularly so for the liner of the socket or cup side of the joint. The ball of the ball socket moves against the liner, and it's the liner that generally wears out first. This material has been markedly improved. For example, the plastic we now use is highly cross-linked polyethylene; introduced about 15 years ago. And recent research from another group showed virtually no wear in this new plastic at the ten-year mark:
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
    There is the potential that these newer materials won't wear out as fast and will last even longer. However, they haven't been around long enough yet for us to know for sure..
    The 'How long?' question is not straightforward to answer, just like your car. What is clear is that the age at which you choose to have a hip replacement is a really important decision. Getting the timing right and looking after your hip will help your hip last you a lifetime.

    I had a hip replacement at 45 since I had no another choice. The pain from the hip was controlling my life.
    I could not sit at a desk without being in pain. I walked with a cain. The only time I was without pain was when I was laying in bed with the leg on some pillows and ice packs around it.
    I had been to PT and worked to keep my muscles built up to take pressure off the joint. If I had worked out 12 hours per day, I might could have developed enough muscles to relieve the pressure on that joint.
    If you need a hip replacement, I recommend having it done as soon as possible. Do not wait. You are just making your life miserable. It is one of the most successful operations that it performed now days.

    I have no idea why I had so much trouble with my hip replacements. I has both hips replaced in 2017. I was 64 yrs old. My right hip dislocated twice in one week 17 months after replacement. Which required a revision. Then my left hip dislocated twice a year later and required a revision. So in four years. I had four hip surgeries. I hope these revisions work. I have ceremic heads. With the revisions the cups put in were larger with the liner having a larger lip which holds the head more. I did loose some mobility. I do excercise. Yet I still feel the replacements slipping at times. Which scares me. I have to be very careful doing any movement that requires squating. I am of normal body weight. I am not considered not over weight at all.

      @@sartainja How very kind of you. Thank you for your good wishes. I am okay now. Considering the situation. One thing I will say is that having to have revisions so soon after both my hips were replaced. Has certainly compromised my range of motion. More so than with the first hip replacements. I had so much more range of motion with the first replacements. Now? Sometimes I get down about not being able to do what needs doing. Because I am not able to bend at the waist to do things that are near the floor. Like dusting the bottom of furniture or cleaning baseboards. And OTHER stuff! I use one of those garden seats? The kind that people who work in their garden and they sit. Well. That is WAY to low for me to risk sitting on. I turn it upside down where the legs of the thing is facing up. Then I kneel on the cushion and use the legs as "push up" bars. Not sure if I am explaining it so that you can understand. But ya know!!!! Remember when we were kids and " old people" LOL!! Told us to take care of our teeth because dentures were NEVER as good as your natural. Ummmm. They were chewing right!! Without dentures many foods would have been able to be eaten PERIOD! So they were chewing!! LOL!!!
      Well. Yeah these hips are not as good as my own were. But! I'm walking! Not confined to a wheel chair AND NO LONGER bed ridden! And no more agony. Just achey. You sure get to do a lot of thinking when you are bed bound. I know about that personally. I am EXTREMELY GRATEFULL that there was a solution for that! Ya know something? WE ALL are here with TWO lives! Yeah we are! The SECOND one starts as soon as we realize we have one life! So. As I said. People who said that dentures were never like their own? They were CHEWING!
      I am walking!! So I think I should shut up and not complain! Which I am not. I AM GRATEFULL that I walk. That's a GOOD thing!!😊😉
