The book of the Dead editions of evil dead 1 and 2, despite losing their ability to scream and the latex drying up over time will always be my favorite releases of those films
You guys have kept your DVDs in pristine shape. Mine have taken a beating over the years, so I've kind of given up on collecting them unless I find something that hasn't made the jump yet.
I remember getting my first DVD player in 2001 and getting Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition and the RoboCop Criterion disc and those were packed with so much extras that I still have them to this day. But yeah current Blurays and 4K discs don't bother with fancy packaging you're lucky if they're sold with a slip cover.
Universal's Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collections. 5 movies each in a normal-width set but it makes up for it with fold-out packaging covered in poster art in a tinted plastic case with more art. Later editions condensed them to a jewel case with just the front and back. Not sure if all the movies are on Bluray yet. Also Universal's original Legacy Collections (the green ones) were in book style like Godzilla. No booklet but they did have a side-loading slip case that integrated with the artwork.
That Toho Master Collection Godzilla DVD you held up was the first of a set. The next 6 Godzilla films were released in foil design covers with that band that slips off. Toho then released Rodan/War of the Gargantuas in a black case & size of the first Godzilla movie to act (supposedly) as a book end to the set. I have not upgraded my collection because I prefer the DVDs in the special packaging. Glad to hear of the interests people are having in the original DVDs. Thanks!
Cool topic! 👍 I think my favorite special edition dvd is that briefcase version of Blade Runner. And how about how cool dvd menus used to be. There used to be an art to dvd menus that were interactive with hidden features and such. Now all blu-rays just have this cookie cutter menu. Play, Chapters, Settings, and if we're lucky Bonus Features. I can remember finding the hidden icon on the old Critters dvd that would play the trailer or maybe it was an alternate ending. Or the Big Trouble In Little China menu where everytime you clicked on something it'd take you thru a small tour of that underground Lair. And don't get me started on the House of a 1000 Corpses dvd. I know you know what I mean. 😂😁👍
I usually sell my DVDs when I upgrade but I still have about half of these which you displayed; Scream box, Elm St.box, Near Dark (kept it even when I upgraded my Twilight cover blu to German digibook), Hills, Land, TCM 2003 with embossed metal plate cover (it was glued to the front cover when I bought it but glue has gone bad and plate is loose now) and Sleepaway Camp Red Cross box. And to the CHH: It's a hard NO to Survival Kit box compared to the red cross. Only reason Anchor Bay changed it is because Red Cross complained and made them to remove the cross from the cover.
Here in the UK we also got the same edition from Anchor Bay of "Near Dark" and also i nice Shiny edition of "Dead and Buried". Excellent subject thanks so much ❤
Even though I'm into 4k and bluray collecting mainly, I'm still finding some movies and TV series I want that never got a blu-ray release, so for me I still buy the occasional DVD. 6 Feet Under and I Claudius are a couple TV series I've had to buy on DVD recently because it's the best format currently available.
Also - I remember happening upon The Monster Squad at Walmart by surprise the Tuesday it was released. My mother was cool enough to let me skip school so I could immediately watch it and all the special features. To me, with that particular memory attached, that DVD was a tough release to beat.
I used to buy my DVDs at Tower Records. They had an awesome section of foreign and international releases you couldn't really find anywhere else in the 90's. Same goes for CD's.
Thanks for showing respect to the DVD format. I still buy dvds Because a lot of the time they have the original poster art for the cover - see the Frighteners. Also, they come with cool booklets.
I feel in some ways we've lost the cool packaging trend...a few boutique label Blu Rays will do such stuff, but it doesn't make me smile that that fold-out "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" DVD set.
Christian mentioned that Evil Dead was filmed in full screen then reformatted it to widescreen. I believe that is how they shoot many moves. Even some of the anamorphic widescreen titles I believe are shot like that.
I used to have a couple cool edition DVDs. Used to in a week before today. Then my neighbors were putting a new roof on my house and didn't put enough tarps down and when it began to leak, there was a waterfall going over my DVD collection. I was going to see if I could possibly salvage any of it, but the vibrations of them still working on my roof caved my bedroom ceiling in and most of them are now under that. I appreciate that my neighbors are trying to help me with a new roof, but I am very upset with the damage.
As soon as you pulled out Near Dark I was hoping you would mention Christian's likeness to Homer again. 😂 Your background looks extra awesome in this video, I love the addition of that jack-o-lantern. 🎃 Also, those Rocky Horror lips are EPIC! 👄
They were released at the same time or at least same autumn. I bought them both day one. I think it was year 2000 or 2001 when Scream 3 and Crow Salvation DVDs were released for the 1st time.
Some of the most fantastic DVD's in my collection. Are the troma divix dvds There are so much stuff on the interactive menus. You can spend hours before you even watch the movie. Yes if done right d v d's can look just as good as blue ray
I think we all have seen different versions of movies in stores in the past. I have one of those spinning saw DVDs. I think it had fake blood mixed in with it. 😁
@@Born2BeRad Very cool brother. Forgive me but I never opened mine. I haven't seen the Saw series. I know. I have seen a 💩 ton of horror movies, but not the Saw series. I need to either buy a complete Blu-ray or 4k set and indulge. 😮🤓
Well Go USA put out Shin Godzilla. You can find plenty of torrents of Godzilla Minus One. I mean, if you are not going to put it out, then you leave us no other choice. There is some really nice versions you can get from Japan but they do not have any English subtitles.
I have to agree with you guys on the DVD coolness. I have over 3k. You know what I wish 🤔❓ I wish some company would make the ultimate DVD player that can upconvert DVDs to at least Blu-ray quality. 🙏🙏
Carry on DvD had a cool animation with clips of sissy specik going through her persecution scene. The Blu-ray version sucked it didn't have any of that. Just plain Lazy.
@@Xapi3 Superstition has an inconsistent look on Blu. Some of it looks good, some of it looks worse than the DVD. The Devil's Rain is just bright as hell, while the Dark sky films DVD looks amazing, and The Pit Blu is the absolute worst. The entire picture is blown up so big, that half of the credit sequence is cropped off. Compare that one to the Anchor Bay DVD and decide for yourself. All of my other Blu Ray titles look better than the DVD though
man it would be great to get a boutique label get near dark blu ray' I still have that anchor bay dvd deluxe its still such a beauty compared to that blu ray
I question how big a Godzilla fan he is. You haven't seen Godzilla minus one. WTF ❓ I saw it twice in the theater and three times at home. Find a way bro. I'm not hating, but just saying that is such a fun movie.
Bro. I don’t have time to get to a theater man. I have a full time job. Run an online business. Have a family. TH-cam channel and a podcast. It’s not as easy as you may think my man. As soon as this thing becomes avail on physical media I’ll watch it.
Let us know anymore that fit this category that deserve love as well.
@@McH0rror yes! Cant wait
DVD packaging, in general, had a leg up on most blurays. The FIGHT CLUB DVD release? That was a great edition!
Yeah, Fox released a whole series of those DVDs, with Fight Club being number 9.
The book of the Dead editions of evil dead 1 and 2, despite losing their ability to scream and the latex drying up over time will always be my favorite releases of those films
Hell yeah, I never picked those up and just have standard DVDs of both but those are iconic and I always wanted them back then or even now.
The Wicker Man dvd housed in a wooden box with the burned in artwork is so special.
Heck ya. One of my all time favs indeed. I will say the recent 4k box set did rival it pretty good too. Thx for checking this out.

Man, the AKIRA release from Pioneer is still cool as hell, if for no other reason than the packaging was GREAT.
True, and their meatpack release of TCM is also great.

Early 2000s anime movies usually came with great artwork, soundtrack cds, etc. They really did those up right.

Where's the love for the Halloween mini mask shadowbox? 😮😂
Tons of love but ScreamFactory did it better.

Witchboard dvd release came with a little cardboard Oija Board with little planchette. You could actually play it.
Yep you’re right!!! The anchor bay one. Good call.
There are still so many dvd titles that don’t have a blu ray release. That’s the main reason I collect dvds.
Yea man! Your right. I did a vid on some of the good
Horror ones still stuck on vhs and dvd.
I hope what Christian says is correct about Godzilla Minus One but knowing Toho, I doubt it.
I have that Bubba-Ho-Tep DVD with the jacket. I love it!
Fright Night 2 was such a big deal to me when it hit DVD . . . The local video store couldn’t keep it in stock.
Yea man. That thing was an anomaly for sure
I got rid of a lot of these when I upgraded to blu. I regret a lot of it now. Especially the NOES set.
I’m a huge fan of the criterion Godzilla set. Still the best set imo

Do you know how long I watched this to see if the dvd logo hit the corner of the television screen!!!
lol

Hells ya
The near dark Blu-ray has all the extras the dvd has all on one disc.
I found a copy of the Bubba Ho Tep special edition in a $5 bin years ago. I already had the standard release but couldn't pass it up at that price
🤜🤛
That’s awesome. Thx for checking this out man
All this DVD talk is like Crack. Can't get enough man!

Godzilla minus one is now on Netflix buddy
Yup. Checked it yesterday. Enjoyed it alot.
I feel like standard DVD has better audio, i have of Hero on DVD and Bluray and the audio is way better on DVD.
The menus were a lot better on dvd’s as well a lot had animation
💯
