Cymbidiums-blooms and care

  • Cymbidiums are hardy terrestrial (or ground) orchids. In warmer areas, they can be grown in the ground. In climates where temperatures drop to or below freezing, cover the ground where they grow with a thick layer of mulch to keep them warm. They are hardy and can survive down to 40 degrees F or as high as 100 degrees F. However, it's advisable to keep them between 50-80 degrees F to keep them thriving. They require a constant drop in temperature of about 10-15 degrees at night in the fall or winter for several weeks to induce blooming.

    New subbie from a cymbidium parent. ♥️👏🏻🇦🇺♥️♥️♥️ gorgeous collection. The whites are stunning. Agree the white orchid mum gave me died because of the cold. It was fine inside and then perished outside. Will never make the mistake again and have protected the outdoor orchids from low temps.

    They are looking beautiful - just to remind you that as yours are so well cared for, your leaf colour is quite consistent. When leaves are dark, they need more light, and when looking a yellowish/green, they need less light. I have just discovered this here in Australia, and where the orchids were kept in different areas of the garden, coming together for Autumn care, the leaf contrast is stark.

    Get on the ground! Stop Resisting! Stop resisting! Those sirens just made hope everyone is ok. Lovely Plants you have. They look very healthy. Some do not care about the plant and keep re-buying plants for views. Real collectors care for the plant, the blooms are just a sweet bonus! Good to see you not abusing them and instead love them for what they are, Creators of Beautiful!

    Sorry Baotran , forgot to tell you I use Osmocote Plus outdoor and indoor six month slow release food and is a life saver helps with feeding all of my terrestrial orchids then I also water all my orchids with a seaweed organic feed mix every time I water . It's awesome helps keep my Cymbidiums happy all spring and summer long the around October 31st I stop feeding them giving them a chance to spike . Well hope yours are growing mad crazy okay . Take care and with much love and kindness , Peace .

    • @BaotransBotanicals
      @BaotransBotanicals  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip! I bought the seaweed organic fertilizer not too long ago but haven't tried yet. I will use it soon!

  • @Ellofez
    @Ellofez 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I force myself to get in the habit to fertilize with an extremely weak amount every time I water all of my orchids and plants so now it takes me just as long to water the and feed them then just to water . You and also use a tiny sprinkle of slow release tomato feed so I been told I just use a small rink amount of a Standard slow release fertilizer for blooming plants and super thrive every time I water but I soak my cymbidiums for I always have bad luck with rotting if I top water them . Thank you for sharing beautiful I need a green one like yours !! Lol

    I had to pause the video to check if the frog was in my house haha. Thanks for the video, the only blooming size cymbidium I have ever bought rotted away. I'm a little afraid to try another since they can be pretty expensive. Yours are sooo beautiful though, makes me want to try again.

    • @BaotransBotanicals
      @BaotransBotanicals  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That made me laugh out loud! Haha yeah those frogs are out of control. I can't seem to get them out of the greenhouse so I have to slowly change all my fertilizers to organic so I don't harm them.
      How much are cymbidiums in your area?

    • @Sofiaee
      @Sofiaee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could probably find some cheaper from local growers but at my grocery store during valentines they had some Noid Cymbidiums for sale for about $40-50.. They were beautiful and maybe worth the money if I had more cash to spare. I'll have to look around during the next local sale because I'd love to have a couple porch orchids :)

    • @BaotransBotanicals
      @BaotransBotanicals  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sofiaee Oh my gosh that's expensive! I get NOID cymbidiums for $20 at trader joe's. $30 at home depot. But at shows they do go for higher prices but I expect them to have names.

  • @apistosig4173

    The original cymbidium orchid flower shape is known as species style. The much broader, more oval shaped flower is known as "show-bench" style" which has resulted from hybridizing. As for your love of green cymbidiums - I urge you to undertake a little research upon Cymbidium lowianum - an originally occurring orchid specie who's DNA exits within most of today's hybrids. loved your presentation :-)

    Hi, my mom who passed away in 2014 left a pink Cymbidium with my relative in LA and was amazed on how beautiful it is. The blooms are big. My relative said she never feed the orchid any fertilizer and just water them every now and then. Is this possible?

    What type of Orchid potting mix do you use? I purchased one a few months ago.

    • @BaotransBotanicals
      @BaotransBotanicals  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Richard Lewis I use a combo of Better-Grow orchid bark (larger pieces) and fine grade Gubler bark (smaller pieces). I add a little sphagnum moss to the mix but not that much. I don't use any peat moss even though this is a terrestrial orchid. The peat tends to fall to the bottom and keeps the bottom always wet and the top dries out too fast. However, I think you can experiment with the different media to see which one you like. You might like the peat moss :)
