This may be my last HistoBrick build for a while - I simply don't have the time to keep making these. Also, I'm not a Lego hobbyist; I enjoyed them when I was a kid, but I've been mainly making these videos to help promote a friend's company (and get free kits that I can pass on to my kids some day!). I feel my channel has evolved significantly in the past year that these videos stick out. I hope to return in the future to these for the occasional special episode, though, when it really fits with the rest of what I'm doing.

To gain a bit of time for keeping your hands warm, you should have lit the lamp. Bright colours help to distinquish the pieces, just like a lamp lightens the way. Thanks again Tom for lightening our knowledge of history. Portland ME's revenge: The Great Eastern never turning a profit.
Ayy we finally get Great Eastern! I am quite smitten with this ship, as she represents to me the great pioneering spirit, the boundless potential of a strong, unwavering passion, as well as a great what-if. I often wonder what would've been if the Great Western Steamship Company made some smarter business decisions and survived to this day. If the Great Eastern ended up getting bought by them rather than the company that eventually owned her, and she was then placed on her intended England-Australia run, it's a possibility that she would've been the giant success that Brunel certainly intended for her to be.
The Great Eastern and it’s story is truly one of the most fascinating in maritime history. A ship that was simply too big and too advanced for her time.
If she had been built in the late 1890’s and given the facilities expected on ships at that time, she could have been a smashing success.
This is the set I’m sad I didn’t pick up, she looks really good with the sails on.
Since the liners should all be the same scale, id love to see a size comparison of all of them.

That's another what-if, in what if she were built later on in time when the economics of building and operating such massive ships were now becoming feasible, as the other companies' ships grew in size and speed and accommodation.
This looks really good, Tom. It’s not easy building a grand ship like the Great Eastern but I think you have a wonderful job of it 🙂
There's something therapeutic when seeing the pieces being put into place.
Now that is amazing, having a sea going artifact like that is something you don’t want see gone. I would say see about getting that lamp running again, but that’s just me.

How wonderful it is to have you here in the northeast! I'm sorry it's so cold! Your poor hands! If I were your mum I would be frantically knitting you open fingered alpaca gloves right now. I think years ago we took a boat from Portland, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. I may be wrong though. I love the coast of Maine. I hope you found a cozy fire to sit before after making this video. I live in the town where the Great Eastern landed the trans atlantic cable in 1866, you can actually see the cable on the beach even now

I have the Combrig 1/700 scale waterline kit of Great Eastern, and am wracking my brain as to how I'm going to trim the highly detailed, tiny and delicate photo-etch paddlewheels to the waterline.

I'm thinking about picking up Histobrick's SS Great Eastern and RMS Republic just so I can use their parts to make an SS Atlantic (1873). 😅 Your documentary on her made me fall in love with her, Tom! Would love to see a dedicated model or Histobrick of her or one of her sisters at least.

Wild to see Portland on your channel, I grew up 20 minutes away. Winter was not the time to do this outdoors, but full points for dedication. There’s a reason that most of us don’t go out without at least having gloves in pockets if we’re going to be out in the winter. I think the dock behind you is the one that basically shares a property with the community college that I started at. Cool lego kit and boo the Great Eastern for passing us over. I’ve seen some damn big ships come into the harbor from the aforementioned community college, some of them were massive and I’m still amazed that they make it in without beaching themselves along the way. Hope you enjoyed Portland!
I started a 40 year career with leggos, we had cities back when you could afford them, literally 2×2 boxes full, well we still had woodshop, auto classes, machine shop, pottery, history, social studies, hell I even took fencing, the pointy kind!
That's what I think I appreciate most about your presentations is the sense that we've forgotten who we are and Why we are that, opposed to another thing.
PS you know I am a assembler when I tell you that I put together the first barcode reader made able to not only print but read code.
Was built for dog track's allowing for instantaneous dissembling of money to winner's.
Little changed to this day.
PS I have the first printer Head ever made, and the second ticket ever printed from it, been setting in the box for 40 year's, I believe the first ticket went to the owner of the machine who was a major dog track owner.

When I was in grade school, I became obsessed with model ships. Ravelle (sp) made a lot of ship building kits including warships and ocean liners.
I can remember trying to construct three or four war ships and a liner or two. Everything had to be glued together and decals for the ship names etc.
What I soon discovered was that I didn't have the patience that it took to complete the models correctly. But I persevered until I was satisfied with my model.
What got me interested in models was when I read the story by Walter Lord, A Night to Remember about the sinking if the Titanic. From that day to this I have been enamored with all things regarding that ship.
When it was found by Robert Ballard in 1985 I was ecstatic. My enthusiasm was renewed. I have followed every documentary I could find, many of which solved some of the mysteries of her sinking.

I always felt the great eastern was the best looking ship I’ve seen, do you know of any books on its history that you could recommend?
I ran across an old ( 40's-50's) book in a friend's library a few years ago about the Great Eastern. I think it was titled "the Great Iron Ship" but I could be mistaken. It was a very good read and left me wanting to write a song about it. I was still pondering that potential when I ran across a new recording by Sting at the time, the Last Ship, concerning his roots from English shipping yards. Damn if he didn't also include a song about Isambaud Brunel, the builder of the GE. Great song and album, perhaps his best work ever as far as I'm concerned.

I have a video recommendation that is not too well known. Out here in Hawai’i, there is a ship called “Falls of Clyde”. This ship has had a big history in our state and once it was decommissioned, we would have school field trips to the ship and the “Friends of Falls of Clyde” would reach us all about the ship and such. It is a registered US Landmark. The ships structure is degrading quickly and needs more attention to live, as the owner group is volunteering as much as they can to keep it up.

Could you ask the guys at histobrick if they could make two kit variations of the hr.ms/hnlms karel doorman (r81).
It's know as the biggest ship the dutch navy sailed, was called by the royal navy into service under the name hms venerable and at some point was sold to the argentinean navy and renames to the Veinticinco de Mayo and was sunk during the falklands war by the uk.. thus i'd like to see more than one version since there are about 3 navies taking control of it.(source for fact checking: Wikipedia.)

I built a giant nearly 4 ft long model out of cardboard thats exact in every detail direct from pix of the ship and deck plans. Wish i could send it to you as i know youd appreciate it. Our local " art" places have no interest in my works. Ive built a ww1 emden class cruiser, the obligatory edmund fitzgerald, the monitor, and most of the ww2 axis navy including the graf zeppelin and italian carrier aquila, a u boat, and a japanese aircraft carrying sub. I also make tanks, planes, guns, helmets, etc...no not looking like duct tape and boxes, but museum class replicas. Its a shame nobody gives a damn.
Not at all. At the very least you should feature them on an Instagram channel. There are MANY people out there who would love to see your work, but you have to make them visible to a much wider market.

The reason why they are so expensive it’s because the cost of the materials and the work to make the kits Lego has a machine to make kits but histobrick they do not have a machine they assemble the kits by hand
