Thanks Jay! I Ordered the #5 Burnin mouthpiece for my new Better Sax Alto. The Burnin mouthpiece was good pared with a Java 2.5 reed, as expected. After playing it a week or so decided I wanted to compare it to the DV HR (why not?!). I liked the Burnin mouthpiece but wow, the DV HR was a big step up for me. I ordered the #6 tip and strapped on a Java 2.5. Better more powereful tone, less stuffy, better control and a much brighter sound. Absolutely love your Alto Sax and thanks for helping me find a great mouthpiece. FYI, I'm 51 and have been playing sax off and on since I was a kid in marching band. I haven't played much the last 10 years (kids, career, etc...) so this new sax and mouthpiece is a new start for me. Thanks!!
DV HR is the best. Great sound, warmth in the bottom, aggressiveness in the high register, freedom in playing, it's hard to describe it in words. Comparable to various mouthpieces, including HR*, for me it's a disaster. I recommend it 👌🎷❤️🔥
Wow Jay, you always do such a great job with your videos. Thank you very much for this one. You sound great and I was happy that I got the blind test right.
Thank you, Jay, for another informative video I aced the blindfold test, which I don't state to brag, but rather to affirm that they do all have distinguishable features. The 1st two were the brightest and the 2nd had a harder edge, which is why I prefer rubber, like you. The HR* (3rd) was much more spread and mellow, and the Burnin' (4th) was again rather strong - a more solid core than the HR*, and you also seem to sound best on it - so I figured it was the one you designed and probably play the most. It is worth noting that these differences are subtle, reinforcing the point that the PLAYER makes a bigger difference in sound than the mouthpiece does. I wouldn't sound like you on any of these, and beginners should be aware that one of these might help them achieve a better version of themselves, but not necessarily make them sound like you sound on the same piece. The key is to find a mouthpiece that you are comfortable on - one that "works" when you play the way you like to play, not one you have to "nurse" by drastically changing the way you blow for high notes versus low notes, etc. Thanks again, Jay, for giving us a glimpse of all these products and for your laid back helpful attitude.
I picked the correct order in the blind test. I play a HR* 7 and like it, but your Burnin has a bit more punch and I like the boost of mid range tone in the sound...to me and my devices. The new DV HR is very cool and I would love to give it a play along with the Burnin, as I like rubber on alto. The price of the DV HR, after hearing the Burnin next to it would be a factor as well along with how both respond to me. Nice video 🎷👍
I guessed them all correctly ! the Sound are really different and the expensive one give more sound quality for sure. Burnin is the best value MP for sure.
I play the DV metal on my alto and have been pleased, despite being a hard rubber kind of player. I picked it out easily in the blind demo. However, this was a great comparison, and I have to say, I think I need to give the Burnin mp a try! I like the roll over baffle sound over the step in this demo. I will be ordering one soon to see how I like the sound/feel when I play. Fun video. Thanks, Jay!
I played saxophone since the 2009 when i was in 4th grade until my sophomore year ... i had never had a good mouth piece but a buffet sax and i alwats struggled with the very highest and lowest ranges ... i heard the burnin on a reel and immediately knew it was the best 😅😂 then i come to this video and heard the origin which is epic ... i hope to get one soon and get back into the music
The hard rubber DV sounds warmer than the metal DV, to me. The HR* sounds warm like the DV hard rubber but less of a buzz to the soft notes. YouBetter SAX mouthpiece sounds a bit like the DV metal. All sound great to me!
I got the blind test right! Holy smokes, never would have guessed that. That JJ DV HR sounds like a perfect balance between warmth and brightness. I own the JJ DV Metal and it can be a bit harder to control sometimes, but I'm very impressed with that JJ DV HR. Might have to consider that one, but that price is hard to swallow for a Hard Rubber. Have you done any comparisons with the Drake Sanborn mouthpieces?
I prefer the Strathon adjustatione mouthpiece. The switch at the top of the mouth piece allows you to get a softer pretty sound or you can bring it up for more edge.
I’ve been liking the sounds on the new DV HR. I was pretty sure C was the HR*, A and B were the DV’s and was leaning towards the Burning for D and I was right! Sweet! Can’t wait for your video on the Supreme!
I have the Jody Jazz Jet mouthpiece. I’ve been eyeing their metal mouthpiece for a few years and watching the price steadily goes up. lol. That mouthpiece plays fantastically.
Jay, great video. My opinion is that the DV HR isn't worth the $450 USD. You were getting the same brightness and fullness and breadth of tone from your Burnin mouthpiece. I've never ever been comfortable on alto, but luckily I found an older Beechler Diamond S6S that I absolutely love to death. If anything happened to it though you can bet I'm ordering your Burnin mouthpiece.
I was able to match them up in proper order (after putting my hearing aids in the Music (uncompressed) Mode.😊 BTW, after having seen one of your videos on mouthpieces few months ago I purchased a Jodi Jazz HR* Alto 5M & HR A1 Gold Power Ring and got a fuller, brighter sound and a more robust volume on my 1960 era Martin Indiana Alto Sax...What a difference compared to my prior Selmer S80 C* and prior ligature with a leather wrap. The Jodi Jazz HR* was a good next step up for me. It has a bigger throat & slightly more open tip, so I went up a half step in reed hardness.
Thanks - In another video you said the Burnin' was easier to generate overtones. I'm having trouble with the 3rd overtone practice, and I think with airflow consistency as well, and I'll be practicing this probably for a long while. Is the Burnin' a particularly good choice ?
Jay, did you use the same reed and ligature? For me, that has affected sound as much as a mouthpiece swap. On my traditional Meyer HR, lig and reed changes can lighten or darken my sound as well as changing reed response. So much of this is splitting hairs, until you're able to actually feel them in your own mouth. I'd argue that feel can be the more important aspect all other things being similar on paper.
All of these mouthpieces sound amazing! I'm coming from a classical playing background where my only experience with jazz was on Bari sax, so a jazz mouthpiece wasn't necessary. Do you have any tips for transitioning to a jazz mouthpiece from something like the Selmer C*?
Hello sir and sorry for the inconvenience... can you answer this for me: currently I am using the conn chuberry alto saxophone and I don't know which mouthpiece to use, so I I hope you can give me a suitable mouthpiece and even better if there is a combo test video. Thank you very much and I look forward to your feedback.
I’ve loved my JJ DV7 for the past 17 years but looking for a new HR to replace my Jumbo Java. How does the new JJ DV compare to their Custom Dark series? Thanks for the quality content Jay!
The custom dark is a lot different than the DV. If you like your metal dv you’ll love the hr version. Can do the same things but with a bit more warmth and the feel Of hr. Custom dark has low baffle much less edge and power. Lots of warmth.
A DV Metal, B DV Rubber, C Burnin, D HR*. Can't believe how expensive they are. I play a HR* and liked it best, probably because I am used to it. P. S., I looked and I suck but in my defense, the Burnin and HR* star are very similar.
Great job.. Wow, I could tell. But the good news is if I ever need another alto mouthpiece, I actually prefer the HR, and the good news it’s the least expensive; so I’m gonna keep that in mind if I ever need another alto mpc ..maybe when I get some extra cash, I’ll just pick one up for grins before they get even more expensive. I might wanna compare it with the burning mouthpiece though, because it might be worth spending the extra few bucks. It’s not much more, and it makes sense to be sure, if I could compare the 2 myself. I like that the burning mouth piece had a little bit more to it. 👨🏻
Hi Jay, can you also do the same comparison on tenor? I need more power, prefer HR, was thinking about the Jet but the DV seems to be the best compromise. Thanks, Dave.
Dv metal sounded best followed by DVHR then burn and lastly the hr star. I Have the hr star and the Dv metal I auto go for the DV metal It just sounds the best to me. Tenor I have a burn and its OK. I can play soft and dark with a soft lip, which is cool. But I want to try some theos and the DV ny. Possibly even the Dv Hr. but I think my mouth likes the metal with pads more right now on tenor.
I got the last two - flipped the metal and hard rubber, but I can tell the difference more in the lower register and didn't hear much of that. But I mean you always sound like you mostly.
Hi Sir.please can you assist with a mouthpiece for a alto yamaha yas 26. I want to play bebop lines and a prefer a dark sound with a hint a brightness and also to be able to project sound easily as well to move around the horn easily.
HR*, metal DV, burning, DV hr is the order I think after one listen. I'm interested to see if I'm close at all haha. Edit: after listening again I'm shocked. The DV hr sounded the darkest, and least like the metal DV to me. The burning and HR* were pretty much identical. I thought the hr* would be the darkest which is why I put it first in my guess. That metal mouthpiece is special. I was hoping the DV hr would be a closer match. Edit2: after a couple more listens, the Hr* is rather dull compared to the rest. The Burnin sounds most like the metal DV. The DV hr is interesting; nothing like the DV is my opinion. I just ordered one to try. I normally play a Morgan mouthpiece and I've been looking for a bit more pop/punch.
I recently bought an HR* but wasn't able to claim a stable tone and kept getting squeaky sounds. I wanted to know if that is normal with a new mouthpiece and if I needed to adapt to it, or is it a problem with its quality.:/
Always takes some getting used to when you change to a new mouthpiece. Especially if it is your first mouthpiece upgrade. Stick with it until you learn the adjustments necessary. Might need to go to softer reeds. The JodyJazz mouthpieces are always excellent quality.
I remember when the DV was a far more reasonably priced (still expensive) alternative to Theo's pieces. Then there was 26% price increase and it's more expensive than any of the Theo Wanne offerings. Yikes.
The problem was that I hadn't raised the price in 11 years. The DV is the most expensive mouthpiece to make by far. I had to raise the price to where it is. As you can tell just by going to the grocery store or out to eat, the pandemic signaled true inflation where all costs of goods soared including labor. I don't feel bad about the price because we still offer the HR* at a very good price when you take into consideration our hand work, quality and consistency.
I’d say that the new rubber one has a weird little clog up/spit like sound but still clean. Similar to the other rubber piece you used. The metal one has a purely clean sound but has a little vibration to it.
