EL CERRO DEL ARIPO - TRINIDAD

  • We hiked with an experience tour guide to Trinidad's tallest mountain peak. This terrain is unforgiving, and one wrong step can land you in serious trouble. Thank God for his mercies in taking us to and back from the peak without incident or accident. This is not for the faint of heart as this hike will test your limits. Ensure you take an experience tour guide, a GPS system, lots of water, a cutlass for clearing the brush & a reliable pair of sneakers. This is the true test of endurance, patience, and overall fitness as you would work all body muscles. I would rate this as a difficult hike.

I had the opportunity to do this back in the 70s while attending St. Stephen's College in Princes Town. My entire Geography class went on this trip with our teacher. I remember the long hike and the hours it took for us to reach the top. But we were young and very excited and I remember my mom packing roti and curry potatoes for my sister and I to eat . Sure brings back good memories of T&T and how things were different back then.

I always remember the local story of the tortoise who borrowed feathers from the birds to fly up this mountain as they were going on a picnic up there. The tortoise got greedy and ate out all the food and snacks. The birds took back their feathers and pushed him down the mountain and that is why he has crack marks on his back.
