I enjoy videos like this and I love this channel. Here's why: I'm a Caucasian North American who has spoken English most of my life. (My first language is actually Spanish, which, by the way, I still speak.) I live in an area where most people are "White folks" who "talk white" all the time. (Whatever that means, since not all of us actually speak alike.) Your comments about "code switching" are not only 100% correct, but also worthy of more respect than many public school teachers and college professors have historically believed and (often) still believe today. Again, there are few Black Americans where I live. Still, it just so happens that I have two very dear friends with familial ties to the African-American/Black community. (One whose mom is white but whose dad is black, the other one whose parents are both black.) In both cases they spoke "General American" ("newscaster American") to me when we first met, but in both cases they also began "sounding blacker" as time went on and our friendship became more established. Today we're very close and while they don't always "go full-blown Black" when they speak to me, I do hear those speech patterns from them quite a bit and I feel their trust and affection for me in every syllable. They've let me into their circle and I love it. I have a question: Did you grow up in a community where most people spoke Black English natively or did you grow up in a community where most people didn't speak it natively and tended to look down on it? Either way, these videos and others like them are NEEDED! Keep up the good work.

Well, I grew up in Brazil, so Portuguese has been spoken around me all the time, but I’ve always loved English and decided to learn it. At the age of 17 I had my first English class and from then on, I continued studying, went to college for further education, and I’ve been a teacher for the last 20 years.
In 2007 I had a chance to go to the U.S. and got to live in Alief, which is a predominantly black community. I stayed there for 4 months studying and making my analysis. My host family was black, too.
Then I moved to Queens, NYC where I continued learning and analyzing. People in both places switched their codes and just like you said, I could see they felt more relaxed to speak when they were around me. They knew how much I loved the variant and how much respect for the culture I’ve always had.
So, I didn’t grow up around them, but I had my 2-year experience and it was a turning point in my career.

Thank You very much. Eu escuto muita musica até hoje do estilo R&B, que foram musicas que marcaram minha adolescência e até hoje estão na minha playlist, e esse vocabulário é muito presente nas musicas. Muito bom o video velho! Abraço
parece que quando escuto brasileiros falando ingles eu entendo tudo, pq sempre usam as mesmas palavras, quando vejo nativos falando tem uma variedade de vocabulario muito maior, e muitas palavras eu desconheço, e acabo nao entendo mt coisa =D
Pinking the lexicon is a matter of choice. I have personally decided to use more “common” words because my intention is to make students understand it.

@@EnglishBlackFriday i got it, im just thinking out loud, cuz i usually watch brazilians youtube channels speaking english and is ok for me but when i try to watch a native speaker i dont understand so much. Acho que é questao de assistir mais para acostumar, assim como falar pra mim eh dificil, escrever isso em ingles foi meio complicado pq nao tenho costume de falar/escrever.
