67 yrs old during that concert. Saw him in person 3 times have all his records.The best of the best.
I Believe he was 67 at that time, already 4 heart attacks triple by pass, hernia, parkensons back operation, and once broke his arm and played one handed that very night, He is the greatest drummer ever ,
Stephen, I agree with you 100%. Buddy was beyond Great, he was SUPERNATERAL! If people are Blown Away by this they shoud check him out at KOLN Germany (I think 1980 or "79)
Whoa! He held a black belt in karate, from which he fractured his right hand. However, I would appreciate it if you would cite the source (s) of your purported biographical information about the highly esteemed Mr. Rich, who, by the way, was a Marine during World War II. (In my humble opinion, he was *one* of the great drummers of the Twentieth Century, but to assert that he was unequivocally the * greatest* drummer during his decades of performing is an exaggeration. Drummers such as Louis Bellson, Joe Morello, Max Roach, et al. were arguably on par with Buddy, who benefitted greatly from performing innumerable times on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show." Anyone who disagrees with me should watch the videos of the aforementioned drummers. ( Count Bassie considered Louis Bellson to be the world's greatest musician/drummer, but Louis never declared just how good he was. ) Interestingly, he and Buddy were close friends who had much respect for each other. So, in conclusion, Buddy Rich was not in a class all by himself, except for one difference from his peers: He had a matchless amount of energy, of drive, which enabled him to perform at a superhuman level well into his sixties. His death was a significant loss to the world of great Twentieth Century drummers.

@@Roy-or6ev first IwTched so many youtubes on buddy rich Ido not know which one I got the broken hand from but its all true second buddy was and still is the greatest drummer of still is the greatest drummer of all time I know ever drummer you mentioned and I I heard heard merellow say the same and others I was a drummer myself in rock way back when tried to study with a jazz drummer but being self taught did not last long . However eary on he asked me who my favoute drummer was GEne kruper said I.GEne made solo drumming famouse the came RIck (they played togethet and were life long friends and admirered one another So did all the other drummers and they learned things from one another,but of all. Those drummers they all will point to RIch as the best of them. Anyway you should study him and your favorites ,Rich was well loved by all those guys had a wicked sense of humor was humble at times but also knew how good he was,which did not stop him from truly admirering other drummers .IF you wish keep looking at buddy rich video and you will find everything mentioned of what IAlready said Stephen
Also know that he's not just the drummer, it's his band. It's the "Buddy Rich Orchestra". He's the leader. I saw him live once and it blew my juvenile socks off. It hit me so hard I played drums for the next 40 years.
Me too! I saw the Buddy Rich Orchestra at a small college in Northeast Oklahoma in around 78 or 79. Mind blown forever.

I saw. Buddy and his band perform in 1974 in Oklahoma.. between sets I got to go back stage and meet Buddy and get his autograph.. it was a dream come true as he was my idol. Mr. Rich was super nice and he told me to keep practicing…
Yes, this solo is beyond description, now, listen to him play music, play a ballad, play brushes, play Latin and on and on.
He was the greatest there ever was and ever will be.
If he was suffering a heart attack during this solo it certainly took his playing to another level.
I was lucky to see Buddy Rich in concert at Wolftrap in Virginia when I was about 10 years old. I was too young to really understand the music I was hearing, but not too young to recognize the excellence. I will never forget it. Without knowing, it lead me to my love of drumming.....John Bonham, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon. Neil Pert, and on and on. Going back to the years when Buddy Rich was in his prime, I would also recommend Gene Krupa........Sing Sing Sing.......and of course, Big Noise from Winetka. 😎
His solos are incredible as witnessed here but his ensemble playing both with a big band or a smaller combo was equally amazing.
Absolutely right on, his ensemble chops are astonishing, it's as of he personally authored the charts even though he didn't read music we've yet to see any drummer breath with the content of the composition like him.

I got to see him live. He was AMAZING! And he always had a group of amazing band with him.
I got to see this master drummer when I was 15 and will never forget it. That left hand is so fast it appears that the stick is not even moving. To think, the man was in his 60s, and having a heart attack during this performance.

@@Johnnycdrums it's just because it has been called " the Impossible Solo", and that is not due to his performance that night but because he performed AT ALL, as he was having a heart attack during it. I think the Hague solo is far better and more impressive. I was lucky enough to see him live in 1968. I met him too and got his autograph. My dad had played briefly with Tommy Dorsey during WWII.

Buddy Rich born in 1917. He’s one year younger than my mother. The solo was recorded and filmed in 1974 that means he was 57 years old. It is sad he never had a childhood. His birth was painful because he was playing drums when he was born.
What is Rich had a habit of growling when he played. You don’t hear him in this, but I’m sure he was growling.

The Concert for the Americas took place on Saturday, August 20, 1982 at the Altos de Chavó amphitheater. Buddy was 65 years old there, and he died in 1987, at the age of 70 due to serious heart problems, which, despite medical advice, he ignored (he was told he couldn't play anymore but he continued.

Scots in London. He was technically brilliant . Also watch Buddy Rich at the Boston Pops conducted by John Williams. This man could play and take lead with anybody. Also his recording of brush strokes is worth watching
Buddy actually had a heart attack in the midst of this performance...He never stopped or slowed down...This is documented...A friend was on the band at that time...Buddy was airlifted to the hospital. He was 67 at this time....A real trooper.I took lessons with Ed Shaughnessy,who had TONS of Buddy stories.

One-party Rich Play back in the Day in Canada high School me and my friend waited outside. He gave me second show backstage put his arm around me and locked me in the best day of my life.

Buddy was born in 1918 to vaudeville parents and passed away one year after the 1986 recording. As a child, he was the second highest paid performer in the world after Jackie Coogan. It is believed that he was having a heart attack during the show. He actually had a brain tumor which caused his death. I'm a super fan of BR and have seen him in person in the 70's. He was born in 1914. That looks like it was in the 80s. He started drumming at age 2 - yes, 2 - played in big bands, then had his own, which I’m guessing that was his band. Sounded like the end of West Side Story. Someone said in the comments he actually suffered a heart attack during that performance. If true, may be able to date it that way! There are tons of videos on TH-cam. Many wonderful performances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. One of my favs is a performance with Mel Torme on the Merv Griffin Show which was an afternoon talk show. You do know who Mel Torme is, don’t you? It’s unbelievable to me the limited lives some musicians have. How could you have never seen Buddy Rich? You need to travel back in time some and expand your universe!
Check out Frank Arsenault, Rudimental undefeated champion in the 50’s, 60’s, worked for Ludwig, I saw him at the Univ Nebr in 1973,-ish at a short one hour clinic just for the drum line. Fantastic.

You'd get a better feel for the entire flow if you let the entire piece play out w/o interruptions.

Not a heart attack. A stroke, I know the symptoms, from personal experience. It still hurts to watch. He was 69 at the time of his stroke. I was 34.
Although the scene in Whiplash was well-done, there is no comparison with the speed, precision and creativity displayed by Rich, EVERY TIME!

0:56,1:59-2:06 It was August 20, 1982 in the Dominican Republic. Supposedly, the temperature was in the 90's with a heat index of over 100 when this happened. (32 to 37 C). 1:51, 2:08-2:12 This was a month before his 65th Birthday. Buddy was born on September 30th 1917. 2:52- 3:09 Yes, he's playing the top of the hi-hat with his right hand, and pinching and playing the bottom cymbal with his left hand. I hear people say things , like , he didn't have a heart attack on stage . They say things like , it was a mild Heart Attack ! I dare anyone to keep working when they think they are having a Mild Heart Attack ! Some say it wasn't a heart attack , they say it was a Stroke , OK ! I Dare you to keep working when you think you are having a stroke ? Some people commit themselves to their craft no matter what ! If you are a performer then your craft is to perform ! If you are leading a band , like he was that night , you do what ever it takes ! Also , his performance that night proved that he is the greatest drummer of all time , with or without a HEART ATTACK ! People want to discount him on the basis that he is only famous for the Heart Attack video . Watch his videos and you will quickly learn just how good this man was !

Yep he is definitely playing the bottom of the high hat. He’s not the only jazz drummer to do that - - I do it too.
Basically you can grab the high hat with your left hand opening and closing it, and if you have a stick in your hand of course when you close it, it makes a tap. The difference with Buddy is that he’s just faster than anybody else who ever lived.

The part @3:28 is hard AF.. and I have never seen any other drummer do anything like it.. best cymbal play ever.. need to listen to it few times to really figure out whats happening..

Yes, Buddy Rich was an amazing, thrilling drummer.
But a tough no nonsense person?
No. He thought he was being tough about musical tastes when he put down country music on the Mike Douglas show, but that was pure nonsense!
He said you could play it on one string, and that Glen Campbell I was basically worthless as a musician. Campbell was an amazing player and a member of The Wrecking Crew, keeping up with studio musicians even though he couldn't read sheet music.
Rich showed that being dogmatic can make a smart person act stupid!
Of course he was taking out his pain that jazz was losing popularity to other genres, but that's a psychological reason, not an excuse
