Listen, I know some women want the alternative/affordable closet system that's comparable to the "California Closets" look by doing the Ikea Pax system. BUT... I am with you 100%. Personally, I just needed my spare room turned closet to serve it's purpose and sure... still have some style but the point is, I wasn't going to spend IKEA money and definitely not California Closet money so I did exactly as you did by getting bookcases from Walmart along with purchasing heavy duty garment racks for my clothes.

I love it! I just don’t know if my clothes hanging over the ledge will irk me or not
Instead of joining all the bookshelves you could probably add a tension rod between the bookshelves. That could probably work for longer items.
