  • Are you moving to New Zealand and wondering how much it might be to rent and furnish an apartment? I can relate as that was one of the questions my husband and I had when we moved to New Zealand from the USA in July of 2022. As Americans moving to New Zealand, we didn’t know what sort of property we could get for our budget or how much even basic furnishings might be. We didn’t know how buying furniture in New Zealand might compare to shipping furniture overseas to New Zealand in a shipping container. As Americans living in New Zealand, we hope our personal experience with moving to New Zealand, renting , and furnishing an apartment might be helpful if you are planning a move to New Zealand.
    Do you ever dream about moving overseas? Is moving to New Zealand something you've thought about . What might be involved in doing moving to New Zealand from America? What would life be like for Americans living abroad in New Zealand?
    Hi, my name is Deb ! I moved from the USA to Auckland, New Zealand with my hubz - Jon- in 2022. We love sharing about our adventure of leaving America to explore our dream of living in New Zealand. We're excited to share experiences we've had in that process of moving to New Zealand , getting settled, and adventures we've had since we've been here- including the good and bad along the way. This is going to be an adventure full of discovery, experiences, learning, and growth. We'd love to have you journey with us. Let's go!

    Please reach out if you'd like help with pricing other items that we didn't talk about in the video. I remember feeling so uncertain about what a budget around a rental and furnishings before we were on shore here in NZ. Happy to help if we can with that kind of info :)

    I have no interest in furnishing a flat, but I watched all of this and was wierdly fascinated. Another win for random TH-cam clips.

    Welcome to New Zealand. Looks like you've got a pretty decent landlord who has gone the extra mile in so many ways. In case anyone thinks all rentals in Aotearoa are like that, many houses are old and some are cold, draughty and damp. I own my own home but as it's a 100+ years old it is indeed cold, draughty and damp. 😊

    Once the weather improves, you'll get used to hanging out your clothes on a clothes line, so much better then a dryer,unless it rains a lot,which does happen in some areas.

    Hi. I am an American who has lived in the Auckland area for 22 years. I want to say you are a very good shopper, especially
    because of the functionality of what you got, and the delivery costs. To find a rental apartment that includes a large modern fridge and a washer and dryer is remarkable. As you have mentioned most rentals do not include any of those appliances.

    • @DebMackey1
      @DebMackey1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, @susanhansell4003😊. It definitely took some shopping around and price comparisons which felt like a lot when first arriving and trying to get oriented to living in a new country. It’s stuff we were looking to know quickly when we landed so I really hope it helps someone else in a similar situation ☺️

    Welcome to NZ.
    Sorry about the weather this week.
    We are over in the waitakere ranges. If you want a nice outing. Ride the train on the western line all the way to Swanson. There is a lovely cafe at the last station (good coffee).

    • @DebMackey1
      @DebMackey1  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mothersuperior67, I'm so sorry for my delayed response. We've been apartment hunting and moving so it's taken lots of our time. The Waitakere Ranges is beautiful. We went there back in early Jan. That's a good idea about going to Swanson. We'll definitely try that one of these weekends. Thanks :)

    With the power sockets you don't have to switch them on and off all the time. That's mainly just for when you're plugging in or unplugging from them so they're 'dead' when you're doing that. Once plugged in you can leave them switched on if the appliance has its own switch, like the kettle for example, just leave the wall switch on.

    • @DebMackey1
      @DebMackey1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @cadifan, oh, good to know. I've been so conscientious about turning them off each time 😆.Those switches made me so nervous initially because I'm not used to putting my fingers so close to the outlets, but now I feel like it's safer. Thanks for chiming in 🙂

    • @geangekate
      @geangekate ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly what I was going to say! If you’re not actually using the switch then its prob good to turn it off, but if you have something plugged into it, esp that you use all the time, don’t bother!

    • @DebMackey1
      @DebMackey1  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geangekate , thanks for chiming in. I feel so silly that I've been doing that each time 🙃😂

    Thank you so much for your videos! My husband and I are planning to relocate to NZ in about a year. I'm curious about the jobs you've been able to find and the level of difficulty in finding them. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

      Abigail, I appreciate the feedback, and it makes me so happy that you found my videos helpful! We’ve just moved to another apartment as the last one was sold - so we couldn’t extend our lease. Definitely learned more tips 😬😆that we want to share from this most recent move in a future video. So , stay tuned My husband is in tech and had applied while we were in the States to some posts on Seek. It took about 5 weeks from that with several interviews per company- about 4 or 5 companies - to get offers. Finding a good time for interviews was a bit challenging as he was interviewing sometimes at 11PM due to time zone differences between the USA and NZ. I’m currently working for the same company that I did in the USA as their Australia branch hired me once I set up a business here to contract and was allowed to work. We will be getting back to making more videos hopefully soon , and one on our work journey is on our to-do list. So please feel free to subscribe so that you’ll know once we do that😊 I’m excited for you and your husband and wish you all the best with your relocation. It’s been such a wonderful experience for us so far 💖✨

    • @DebMackey1
      @DebMackey1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks😊 It’s near but not in the CBD area. Don’t want to be super specific about our home address on the internet 😂 but it’s in an area that’s walkable to lots of places which is part of what we needed without owning a car.

    You are defintely in the higher end of the market ?
    If you own a house in the states, NZ house prices are dropping, high interest rates, and the NZ dollar is down against the USD. If you sold your house in the states, you will double your $$.
    NZ has no capital gains FYI

    • @DebMackey1
      @DebMackey1  ปีที่แล้ว

      We can't buy until we are residents. Not sure what "higher end of the market" means... but if I'm guessing that what is meant is that we are in a nice place for the price range, I believe we are. ☺
