The personality of Leon in the RE4 remake makes sense. RE2 to RE4 was a shift for Leon both times, just with the original one being a change from the naive loser to snarky action hero (befitting the drift into action RE4 was for the series in general). With the remakes, there was also an evolution of Kennedy, but with the characterization in the 2019 falling closer to determined cop, him becoming the witty agent tossing off one liners when not flirting with the President's daughter wouldn't make as much sense. RE4 remake Leon is someone with clear PTSD and the forlorn outlook in combination with past trauma colors his interactions with everyone, Ashley included. He's not making jokes to amuse his imagined audience; he's doing them just to get through the nightmare event he's found himself in. Given that the remakes since 2 have effectively been doing a stealth reboot of the series anyway, it's not surprising that Leon would be adjusted to fit the contrasting tone.
Oooh I love that! "He's not making jokes to amuse his imagined audience; he's doing them just to get through the nightmare event he's found himself in". That's so gritty and dark and so fitting for the gritty atmosphere of RE4R!
Honestly, I love both versions. Remakes Leon is still witty and has comebacks, and it comes off like his jokes are his true personality, peeking through his veil of expected professionalism.
I really like that interpretation! That Leon's jokes are his true personality peeking through his veil of expected professionalism. That gives Leon a lot of added depth!
I prefer OG Leon. After his break up and getting drunk, once he met Ada he was in a very vulnerable and emotional place at that time, and with her seemingly being a innocent woman with a gun looking for her boyfriend, it was his job to protect her as a cop, and just as a person. After Ben's death, it was motivation for Leon to actually try and work with Ada since he died want her to end up dear like Ben as well. After the Birkin fight next to the train, Ada reveals her feelings for him it's kind of a unhealthy relationship since they both technically just got out of a relationship, and needed someone to depend on. In Leon A, Ada has Leon at gunpoint but can't pull the trigger, while Leon B, she already has the G virus and could easily leave, but came to save Leon from Mr. X, with the two sharing a kiss before she seemingly dies. In Leon B, Leon finds out Ada might still be alive, and is followed up on in RE4, with him telling her in their first encounter that he did some investigating on Ada and found out she worked for Wesker. While RE4 Leon's cocky attitude might seem like a tonal change, in the RE6 files it's alluded to that his jokes are for coping over everything he's been through. And by RE4, he's been through RE2, military training, and Operation Javier, so RE4 doesn't really phase him by this point. Leon's only really serious around Ada and Krauser, who already knows him as well, so that's why he doesn't joke around with them.
I really like your assessment! And I'd never thought about Leon being serious around Ada and Krauser because they already knew him so he didn't need to front around them! That's so interesting and so fitting... Thanks for pointing that out!
If I were to rewrite Leon for a movie or new set of Games, I would try to incorporate elements of both. For example, I would keep the OG Backstory of the drunk Leon showing up late, then have him still be naive around Ada and fall for her boyfriend story. When meeting Annette and talking with her, he wouldn't believe her necessarily like the Og but the idea would be put in his head which would make his betrayal shocking, but still keep the tension from the Remake. He would still have lost people which still sets up nicely for an edgier and more serious RE4 Leon, who is 2 years fresh from Javier. He would still feel like atoning for his failure in Raccoon City and Operation Javier. Though saving Ashley would teach him the values of saving even just one life, and he would find himself again. TLDR: mixture of Leon depictions; starts out drunk, naive for Ada, Annette puts the thought in his head that Ada is a spy. He thinks about it but doesn't necessarily believe it. Ada betrays him but he's somewhat prepared. Operation Javier and Raccoon City ruin his mental state. RE4 starts out with brooding Leon, but while/after saving Ashley, he becomes more open and finds purpose and happiness.
I personnaly prefer Leon he had a more Leon style to him, but Leon is a natural evolution since we already see his depressed traits in RE 6. But I have no problem in toning down Leon's style to give more depth.

There's just so much to feel when it comes to this topic. Personally I'm split on what I actually like more personally. I will say his original RE2 story was just plain out better, but RE4 is a mixed bag for me. I think both versions are solid and portray him in a way that I found enjoyable. He cares for Ashley in a way that just isn't seen as much in the original. IDK something about their connection seemed more genuine and real, and less creepy towards her looking at it these days tbh. I still enjoy the campy B movie survival horror dialogue just as much as everyone else in the original interpretation, however I just think they did a phenomenal job in making him seem more relatable and sarcastic in a way that feels more believable and in touch with the other characters. His bond with Louis is quite more interesting too. It just felt like they gave him more chances to be an actual person over a personified self insereted videogame character. I found his new jokes fit the tone well and we're still a joy to listen to. At the end of the day I just hope if they do throw out a Resident Evil 6 remake in the future, they keep giving us something more in line with Resident Evil 4 remakes interpretation of him, but maybe soften him up just a tad since he'd be quite battle hardened by that point. Sort of like a mix of the old and new blending the more snarky humorous side with the more sarcastic serious side
You make a really fair assessment! I can see why you'd be torn between the different versions of Leon. I also like RE2 originals story better. Yeah, it was messier since both Leon and Ada were coming out of a relationship and it was unhealthy the way they initially were attached to one another, but I feel like that was such a human thing to have happen. It felt more realistic in that way versus the heroic cop makeover they gave Leon in RE2R. I really like when you said, "It just felt like they gave him more chances to be an actual person over a personified self insereted videogame character". I'd never thought about how "main character" Leon felt in RE4 versus his RE4R self haha
One thing I’m glad Capcom kept the same is his level of smartassery. Perhaps they added onto it in RE4R; he’s even more professional than “sexy spy Ada”, and he himself knows it. How does one gain the stones to mock lovecraftian monsters to their faces?
See my thing is I think Leon being much more serious and brooding works well when he's older and more jaded due to the years of fighting. Leon in the original RE4 works so well because this is him in the prime of his life capable of anything, therefore having a mostly carefree attitude. (He's also really badass which is why I love him). But the reason why I'm not a big fan of him in the remake is because by him being super brooding and serious it takes away from his arc in the later years like RE6, Vendetta, and Death Island where he does become more serious because of his experience
Yes!! 100% agree. It really does take away from how much more serious and darker he is in RE6 and Vendetta and it makes his swing back into a more positive attitude in Death Island have less weight to it too. I'll be interested to see what direction they take Leon in RE6R (if they remake RE6 haha). If they'll keep him serious or maybe even make him even darker and more hopeless...
Gotta say, I prefer Remake. I like genuinely heroic heroes and find the "more realistic" or darker ones boring because they're usually moody, arrogant, annoying, or what have you. Genuine heroes are more interesting to me because they give you someone to look up and aspire to be. Leon getting drunk, then being late to work and then turning into a simp for Ada is a bit more bad and boring, in my opinion.
How was Leon a simp? To his knowledge, Ada was just a civilian looking for her boyfriend, and what is duty being a cop it was to protect her. And your 'heroic' remake Leon let Ben died despite begging for help. Original Leon actually tried to save Ben. Plus 2Remake Leon has far less personality. He's like a robot with cop mode on. Leon in OG 2 tried his best to be a cop, but he was kind of made fun of for it and no one listened to him just showing how in over his head he is in this situation.
I have! I have my own opinions on what we've seen of SH2R, but I'm hoping things get tightened up for the release. Right now we're seeing things before they've been finalized so I have some hope that they'll look better in the final version. The first time we saw James go through Silent Hill his car was parked perfectly in the parking space, which really bothered me because his crooked parking is really indicative of his headspace at the time (he's parked crooked because he's not thinking straight), but in this latest version of SH2R he's parked crooked now. Little updates like that give me hope that we haven't seen what the final vision is for SH2R. Are you excited for SH2R?

They did a good job with Leon. At first, he was naive in RE2 and finally wised up going into RE4 & beyond!
