@@TheHistoryHikers the book is a narrative history of the 14th century in France and centers around Enguerrand de Coucy the last Lord of Coucy. Your tour of his castle just brought so much of the book to life! Thank you.
Great work buddies! Lot of love and great respect for your excellent work from a solo mountain hiker friend from the Lower Chitral District of Pakistan.
Hello, greetings from us. 😄Thank you for this beautiful very informative walk through the history and ruins of the castle. 👌 We have a lot of castles and they have interesting stories as well. Thanks for sharing, let's stay connected. Have a nice weekend. Sretana & Zac
Hello friends, thanks for your comment! We will have to visit your side of the world as well sometime to see those magnificent castles! Stay healthy, from Dries & Jente 👋
Hey History Hikers - another fascinating and amazing castle that you've visited, plenty of interesting remains left and it's great to learn about Coucy, love your videos! :D 👌💗
Hi, I enjoyed this hike down history lane! Impressive castle ruins and stories behind them! Joining you on more history hikes! Greetings from Los Angeles, California!
Hi, thanks for your kind words! We're very glad to have you along in the future and we hope we can edutain you in coming videos 😀❤️ . Greetings from Belgium!
Wonderful video. I have been binge watching since I found your channel as a Castle and historic building lover from the UK it is amazing to see these wonderful continental places. Fab, and really helped me through a stressful time too ❤
We're glad we could be of help during some challenging times, it's a great compliment for us as well 👍. Thank you for watching our videos, it means a lot ❤️
@@TheHistoryHikers Thank you, really great stuff and you seem to be wonderful people. Extending peace, love and gratitude for sharing your adventures. Take care and look forward so much to watching the next one ❤🕊
Another wonderful walk full of history! I learned a lot ! You narrated it so well. Interesting to know about the Lord of Coucy bold motto. The ruins look amazing... the fog made it look so mysterious. Thank you for sharing.
Hey, thanks for the kind words 😀👍. We aim to provide both beautiful views of the castles and share their interesting histories, your words make us believe we achieved that in this video, so thanks again 🤗
You both do a great job of reviewing these monuments to man's creativity and ingenuity. I can relate to your anger regarding their destruction. So unnecessary. 👍👏
This video is how I found your channel, I'm currently reading A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman which follows Engeurrand de Coucy. Such a shame the Germans destroyed the donjon. Your video helped me to imagine the castle in it's heyday. edit: Ah I see I'm not the only one, just saw the other comments about the book haha.
We've had so many replies related to that book that we had to buy it ourselves. We'll read it soon! Seems like it's definitely worth it 😁. Thanks for commenting!
“The outer walls, foundations, underground chambers and tunnels, portions of inner walls and doorways survive over acres of tumbled stones. Above a cracked lintel the unarmored knight still engages a lion in combat. For 700 years the castle had witnessed cycles of human endeavor and failure, order and disorder, greatness and decline. Its ruins remain on the hilltop in Picardy, silent observers as history’s wheel turns.” -Barbara Tuchman, “A Distant Mirror”
We've had a couple of people visiting us because of reading that book and it seems like we definitely have to read it ourselves. Great quote! Thanks for watching. 👍🏰
It was general Ludendorff of the German high command who blew up the donjon for no other reason than spite. Bastard. A good book about Coucy, the chateau and the 14th century in general is 'A Distant Mirror, the Calamitous 14th Century' by the great historian Barbara Tuchman. I highly recommend it as it's a paragon of historical literature.
On the contrary! Our latest couple of videos are all from Germany and they show that France was equally destructive as their armies passed through German lands! 😄
It is really impressive!!! As if traveling back into time. And Mazarin interfering? And why would the Germans destroy it, just as a revenge for their defeat?
Lovely comment 👌. Your questions answered: - Mazarin decided to dismantle the castle so that enemies of the crown won't be able to use it anymore. - the castle was destroyed during the German retreat. You could see it as revenge, but our source said it was to spite Rupprecht of Bavaria who asked general Ludendorff to protect the castle from damage during the war. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video!!👍
And the Castle is a Must 😃
Thanks for your kind words! This castle is indeed a must see if you love history and castles! ❤️
Had to see this video after reading A Distance Mirror. So cool!
Now we have to read that book, somehow never heard of it 😅. Thanks you for your comment!

Awesome, we are very happy to have been able to make that possible! ❤️ We'll read the book ourselves to reflect on our visit 👍👋

Hi, thanks for your kind words ❤️. It's sad to see that even today people still want to destroy/erase culture during wartime 😕
@@TheHistoryHikers Their are no winners in war, just death and destruction. You would think humanity would have learned this lesson, alas sad indeed.😔

rebuilding the donjon is estimated for 20 000 000Euro
That's a lot of money, probably easier to leave it as a monument to barbarity 👍
