Its funny that you posted this video today, as I literally just today semi retired my Suunto Core after 3 years of awesome service. Its been everywhere from the mountains of Afghanistan to the deserts of El Paso and was retired in the cold snowy hills of western Germany. My Core has been beat up and put through the paces and I have to say is one of the best watch's on the market hands down. Today I purchased the Casio ProTrek PRW 3000-1A, and although my Core is still going strong I have had the battery go down on me in area's were I was not able to procure a battery in a timely matter, i.e. Afghanistan and out on a field training exercise in the Mojave Desert. The Casio ProTrek PRW 3000-1A is a solar powered atomic ABC watch and therefore I should no longer have to worry about the battery. Prior to the Core I used a Casio PRG-80 which I took to Iraq in 2009 and used all the way up until Jan 2012 when the strap broke and as I was headed out to Afghanistan in a few days, couldn't wait for a replacement strap in the mail. The PRG-80, also a solar powered ABC watch preformed flawlessly and since Casio updated their sensors I decided to go back to Casio for their dependability and solar power. The only other issue I had with my Core was the strap breaking on me after about 2 and a half years of use. The small excess strap keeper had broke about 2 years into use, then followed by the main strap piece which broke at the 2 and a half year mark. Anyone looking at the Suunto Core will not go wrong in my opinion!! Thanks for sharing all your adventures and gear review's, you do a great job!!
Chad Poindexter Yeah I never had the issues with the buttons, and I never took the watch off for use to check the temp, I either use this www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DF9VUC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which is ok for use, or I use this www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004V1XJDY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which you already have and use. And since I never took the watch off, almost ever, I never had the watch cool down enough to have the problem with the backlight.
Chad Poindexter this is another good option, www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005OVCF8U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 it does not have the V3 sensor's, but the sensors it has are still great sensors. This one show's a lot more data on the main screen and adds moon cycles and tide information, which would be useful if you are near the coast and want to plan fishing times and/or wanted to know what cycle the moon is going to be in.
Chad Poindexter Yeah they do have a lot of options, the 280/270 series are good options to if price is a factor, but if I had to rank them for all around I would say the 2500, 3000, 1500 then the 278/280 series. I actually ordered the 2500 and then when I went to Post Exchange I saw they had the 3000 (which I could have got on Amazon cheaper but the instant gratification was a big factor) , I did not cancel my order of the 2500 because I hopefully got a good deal. The one I ordered on Amazon was "used" but it said in the description that only the packaging was damaged and the watch itself was new. We will see if that is really true or not, but I only paid 140 for the 2500 on Amazon.
Presto Gun Blue Pen touched up my Suunto Core Blacks bezel made it look almost new again. You can find this at Academy or any outdoor store for a few dollars.
I’ve had mine 10+ years and have a button that sticks occasionally. Did have to replace the band and went with an aftermarket canvas type for $12. It will last. Do you still have it?
Very grateful for the review. I appreciate the description and I'm in agreement regarding feature set. So... what ultimately drove me to Casio were the reviews on Amazon. The Suunto Core received 15% ratings of 1 and 2 out of 968 reviews while the Casio received 5% ratings of 1 and 2's out of 173 reviews. The complaints around Suunto centered around reliability (this was based only on short look at the reviews, I didn't go through them all). The issues on the Casio were around the non-rotating bezel, the button being opposite up & down and the most common complaint was the picture on the amazon sight did not match the watch received. I don't have the watch yet, hopefully I don't become one of the 5% :-)
I love this watch... the ONLY issue I've had with this one (it's my second) is that the black bezel can wear off just a bit... I was upset... but after sucking it up and trying to use a black sharpie... it worked perfectly... doesn't even look like I tried to fix it... looks new again.
Yeah, the paint wears off pretty easily. I found that a sharpie wasn't a perfect cover up, but it worked ok... I just got used to it being a bit scuffed...lol.
I have the Core, Deep Black for more than a year now. It has issues with the battery. Once it starts "draining", then is not working properly. All of a sudden it just resets itself. One more thing I don't like is that the timer is quite small compared to the size of the numbers which show the time. When I am running I am having a hard time reading the time, because the numbers are so small, compared to the numbers which show the time.
I am not sure what you mean by draining? The battery starts to drain as soon as it is put in the battery. Or are you talking about once the battery light comes on. Once that light comes on it is an indicator that the battery is near insufficient power to keep the watch working correctly, and it should be replaced. I understand what you are saying about the timer. It would have been nice if the larger display would cycle each function. Saying that, I rarely use the timer though.
Exactly. By draining I means as soon as the battery light comes on. Like you said, if the timer or the stop watch could cycle each function would have been great. If you ask me whether I would have bought the same watch, had I known all these issues, the answer is no.
I can't believe I missed this video two weeks ago! Great 2 year review. I think you might remember that I receive a Suunto core Sahara for fathers day last year and had a display issue a few months back, after a reset it was fine. I put the Suunto core on a wish list after I saw your initial review, battery flaw and all, and as a EDC watch I am pretty darn happy and even receive complements at the office. Would you say the possibility of a battery change in the field would be easy enough without getting debris in the watch? Thanks Chad!
one important aspect I would like to be cleared: the buttons can be pressed safely underwater? For Suunto Vector for example, although the watch is waterproof, if you operate the buttons underwater, water will get in and wreck it. Thank you
I can't say that I have ever noticed myself pressing the button underwater... However, I have worn the watch while wet and in the rain and pressed buttons... I know it's not the same thing though.
I just received mine that I ordered for my boyfriend, but the box says All Black & not All Black Military. Is there any differences because I'm not seeing any? & if you can please tell me which name (All Black or Black Military) it had on the box? I'd really appreciate it, thank you! :)
Thanks for the review...when you change the battery yourself you lose the true water seal on that back cover.....have you taken it under water? and did you find that water vapor builds up under the glass?
I have taken it under water many times, both in pools and in the ocean. The seal is just fine since changing the battery 3 times now, and there has been no condensation issues inside the watch. But, you must be careful when reapplying the back cover and make sure the seal is still good, and is in the correct place. If this is not done then no, the seal will not set.
The back button (upper left corner) eventually stopped working on mine. I actually got a new Suunto Ambit3 Peak in the mail today though... So while my Core is still working (for the most part) it has now been replaced. I will still keep it though and my son can wear it on hikes.
I just purchased this for my boyfriend, but the box says All Black.. I was wondering if there's any differences between the All Black & All Black Military or are they the same thing? & what's it under on your box? I'd really appreciate it, thanks! :)
I am not using it anymore, however I do still have it, and for the most part it still works. As for buying it again, I can’t say. If I wasn’t worried about any GPS features I would consider it, however this watch is pretty old now and I don’t know what else is out there anymore. Saying that though, it was a pretty solid watch and at this point in time I would imagine they can be found for much less...
@@SticksBlog Thanks. I'm thinking about getting one for the Altimeter, and I know that the weakest data from G.P.S. is altitude. Latitude and Longitude is dependable from G.P.S., but as a 30+ year retired air traffic controller, G.P.S. is NOT used for altitude information on aircraft. Aircraft use barometric pressure in inches mercury to calculate altitude, and any changes to air pressure is announced by controllers as soon as it happens. That's why G.P.S. is not important to me for altitude.
I’ve had other Suunto watches that I use for flying an ultralight paramotor. I just bought this watch but I’m returning it because the display is so faint I just can’t see it at any angle except directly in front of my face. I got a good amazon deal ($154) but I just ordered a similarly priced Casio G-shock Aviator watch for about the same price. I really prefer the look of the Suunto, but I need functionality more than anything. Thanks for your review.
Yea, they have definitely come down in price since I bought mine. As for the negative display, I haven't really had any trouble reading mine. Even on the Ambit3 Peak I now use I keep the display negative. I imagine some folks just have a harder time reading it... Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you.
I have. When I got the Core I debated between these 2. I really can't say what exactly lead me to go with the Core. I have been happy enough with it, but like some of the features with the ProTrek's too (particularly the solar powered bit).
Hey Chad. Did you have any problems with your ALT giving bad readings? I have mine referenced and locked on "alt". I leave home with it set at 581. Drive to work 20 miles, come home and it reads in the 540's. Is this something you have seen?
he has a quick reading of the altitude ? I could rely on it for example in free fall ? hey guy , you think this watch would be good to practice skydiving, say on the altimeter function?
I had SUUNTO X LANDER 2011 until 2016. After 2 years the battery died and watch people told me to send it away to SUUNTO to get in changed to keep the barometer as is. But i was like no way just chuck a $15 battery in it now. the last 2 years when i am exercising the screen got a little foggy and it died in the plane 1 week ago when we went up. So weird. In conclusion awesome watch! im searching for the exact same watch now still retailing expensive as hell! i got it off ebay for $250AUD back in 2011
From india. Using this for 3 yrs.The worst thing i faced with this watch was the elastonomer strap literally disintegrates. as it's not common watch here service sucks . I had no option but to get the Zulu strap from China. Battery lasts about a year. Not face any other issues though
hi man i want to buy this watch but i dont know it is worth it or not ! because i read bad reviews about suunto core ! many people said that their suunto core was dead after 1 year ( screen wont work or other problems such as keys wont work ! function wont work .. ) so im asking you my friend ! What should i do ! i like this watch but quality is more important to me ! what do you think about other brands like casio pwr 3500 or others ?
Chad Poindexter I had an issue with my Core, it was adding like 3 m every hour when in Alti mode and made a little experimente to determine what profile will be fairly accurate. Found out that the Auto was more accurate (in my case) than Alti but at the same time it could mean that there's a problem with my pressure sensor...
Biggest problem with these watches is the button's sticking. I have a feeling they all have or will have this problem. I have this watch too, and had to send it off to get repaired. After 3 months and many phone calls later, they replaced the watch with a new one. I may just sell it and buy a comparative Casio. When I got my new watch back, I looked on the back of the watch and see that these are no longer made in Finland, but are now made in China, "designed" in Finland. Great looking watch and features, but poor interior build quality.
It does seem that many folks complain about the buttons... but to be fair, there are multiple complaints about this on pretty much any watch out there that sees the type of use that these watches are intended for...Anyway, I replaced the Core with an Ambit3 Peak... I'm hoping that the buttons work out better than on my Core... lol!
Actually, I still have my first Suunto which is the Xlander and its beat to heck without any button problems. Still going strong and was wearing tht watch while my core was out for 3 months. Only thing I dont like about the X-Lander is the plastic battery cover. Love the Core's nice stainless steel battery cover. I was happy that Suunto replaced the watch I sent them with the military style, inverted screen. Though, dont like the inverted screen, I have a hard time reading it. Anyway, thats the way it goes. Other than the cool features, what I do love about the Suunto watches is their crystal glass face and not plastic like most of the Casios that easily get scratched up.
+Tiago Mizuno I actually haven't had any issues with my strap, and it still has the original strap. I have heard others complain about both the strap and/or the keeper though, so had been expecting it. Happy to report, it's still good though! I will say that I handed it down to my son about 4 months ago though. I went with an analog watch for the time being...
I have not had any issues with buttons sticking, however, a while back I had issues with one of them responding... In time it seems to have worked itself out though, or I have just gotten used to pressing harder. lol...
@@davedhayden Watch has done fine. change battery about every 12-14 months. Band keepers disintegrated after 2nd year. Changed the band to a NATO nylon band with metal keepers. No complaints about the watch itself though.
Three years ago I purchased a Suunto Core, never could get it to work correctly been sitting in a drawer. Contacted Suunto they were no help waste of money, piece of junk!
This is the dumbest watch I've ever owned. Completely unreliable in the field and confusing as hell! Also Suunto costomer service is literally non existent for the US consumer. My retailer can't even get help from Suunto Oh and the battery dies every 3-4 months. My $40 Timex blows it away!
I am sorry to hear that... It sounds like you got a lemon though if you are having that much trouble... I cannot say I have had any of those issues with my watch, but will admit, I have not tried to contact Suunto, so cannot comment on their customer service. I don't find the watch to be confusing, although, it does have a number of features, so it can be tough to navigate for some. Also, the battery life has been pretty consistent at a year of use, although, the last battery I put in has been going for 1.5 years now and still no low battery light, so the brand of battery may make a difference. Sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience, and glad to hear that you still have your trusty Timex!
Your last video you said you paid like 160 or something on sale now according to your math your trying to make people think you paid 120 per year X 2yrs 340.00 that you would of paid for the watch. Your math is off there guy. Its more like you paid 80 per year. LOL are you trying to impress your self on here. lol
I apologize... in the previous video (the 1 year review video) when I quoted the $160 price I was thinking about the watch I was wearing before the Core (a Highgear Axio Max, which I paid $162 for). I did pay $240 for the Suunto Core watch, I just misquoted in that one spot on that one video. In fact, in all the other videos I have on this watch, as well as my write ups, I stated that I paid $240, which was a sale price. So, no, I am not trying to make people think I paid anything other than what I paid for it, nor am I trying to impress you, me, or anyone else for that matter. It was a mistake that obviously over the course of almost 8 years now, you are the only one that noticed. And as far as I am concerned, I am not trying to talk anyone into buying the watch, or out of buying the watch... these videos (as all of my videos) are meant to be food for thought to help others with any questions they may have about a particular object... And for the record, while we are pointing out mistakes, I'll point out how easy they are to make, and how everyone makes them... While you were schooling me on my math, your own math was quite a bit off... "120 per year x 2yrs" comes to 240, not 340.00 as you stated, guy. And by the way, I'll also point out that the $120 per year x 2 years comes to $240, which IS what I paid for it. Thanks for watching, and glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks.
thank you for this
Excellent.
What do uou think about the strap? I had to replace it once, and the second I got(the light strap), I think it will broke any time. Bought it online
Chad Poindexter I hope this one that I bought last longer. Thanks for the answer
Have you had any problems with buttons sticking like I have? Here is a video of my buttons. th-cam.com/video/tcSlX6B2F28/w-d-xo.html
I have not had any issues with buttons sticking, however, a while back I had issues with one of them responding... In time it seems to have worked itself out though, or I have just gotten used to pressing harder. lol...
Chad you should have bought a mudmaster Casio you won't have those problems
...love your brittish accent. Am i right?
Haha... I can't say I have ever been accused of having a British accent! Southeast USA... :)
Maha Lingam British accent 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I hope I sense sarcasm there!
Good review!
Just got one from jomashop for $150. Thanks for the info
Nice. I have noticed that since buying mine the price has come down pretty good, but they are still great watches. Hope you enjoy yours!
@@davedhayden Watch has done fine. change battery about every 12-14 months. Band keepers disintegrated after 2nd year. Changed the band to a NATO nylon band with metal keepers. No complaints about the watch itself though.
@@davedhayden sometimes with the glare. there is a face protector you can get to eliminate that
good video :) subbed btw
nice review but seems like a heavy waste of money. Ill take my cheap timex lightweight iron man and a stand alone durable compass
Three years ago I purchased a Suunto Core, never could get it to work correctly been sitting in a drawer. Contacted Suunto they were no help waste of money, piece of junk!
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with it. I understand that any company can make a lemon, but that is no excuse for poor customer service.
Chad by name, not by voice. JK ;)
