Five of Western Australia's Greatest Cabernets + a Beauty from the Yarra for Context

  • There are some terrific wines being produced in Australia. Margaret River is responsible for a fair whack of them - even more when you consider what tiny percentage of the total crush the south-west region can put its name on. So - we decided to throw a little tasting together to find out how they stack up alongside each other, and we included a beauty of a Yarra cab for context.
    The wines we open here:
    2017 Moss Wood, Margaret River RRP $130
    2016 Vasse Felix Tom Cullity, Margaret River RRP $180
    2017 Cullen Vanya Flower Day, Margaret River RRP $550
    2018 Cullen Diana Madeline, Margaret River RRP $135
    2016 Woodlands Clementine Eloise, Margaret River RRP $140
    2017 Mount Mary Quintet, Yarra Valley RRP $150

    Any review you see on my socials ( / erinllarkin , this channel and my website (www.erinlarkin.com.au) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend and you like them - good! Because so do I.

    Can’t wait to hear thoughts on more current vintages. Have you considered a video of a blind tasting and reveal in a similar style? Just for interest? Six of my favourite ever australian wines in one tasting! And the comparisons are fabulous and enjoyed the comments of the woodlands vertical comparisons. Also rate 16 over 17 … but the Xavier ‘18 is better again!

    Blackstone Paddock just won 2 trophies, 1. Max Schubert AM Trophy for Most Outstanding Red Wine in Show, and 2. the Prof AJ Perkins Trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon for their 2018 example, at this years RAWS. Amazing result just in. More trophies for the Margaret River. No doubt JJ knows. Bargain at $18 also, now we need to race to Aldi ..

      @@erinlarkin Great to hear that the Standart glasses do so well =) Might have to spot for some... How do you suppose they go for Shiraz?

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sojana01 Pretty well. What I see so far is a very different nose profile to the Riedel Ouveture Magnums (universal) which I have been using for years. The Gabriel's seem to have a more intense burst of fruit aromatically, but after that the finer points of spice and detail emerge. I think more clearly (?) but I am still getting used to them. I did try them with sparkling yesterday and wasn't a fan - the bubbles disapated very quickly and I had to be quick on the aromas. Still a fan of the Riedel Veritas Champagne glass for sparkling...
