Advantage of having a sliding, physical keyboard on your phone:
The virtual keyboard will not cover 90% of the screen when you tilt it to horizontal mode.
This should be a good gimmick for 2020 phones. Make sure it is durable and buttons are big, clickable and easy to press.
When the phone is vertical, virtual keyboard can be use. But in horizontal mode, virtual keyboard is off as you can use the build-in sliding keyboard.

One issue I see from this video is that keyboards would have to be a lot longer than the old phones because of the large touchscreens, which would make the physical keys pretty large and spaced out, something I wasn't a fan of back in the day. I preferred simple, small keyboards that I could easily reach both sides if I stretched far enough with my thumbs. It's a personal issue I suppose. I just really miss the speed and accuracy I could text with on a full physical keyboard phone, even behind my back thanks to the standouts on the f and j keys he mentions in this video. Ah, the old days. 😆

Touch screens are just horrendous for me. The area is tiny, I never hit the key I intend to, the onscreen keyboard obscures 1/3rd of the screen, and the autocorrect everyone tells me works so damn well makes me sound like a foreign exchange student with dyslexia.
Sure I can get away with typing a 5-10 word message on a touchscreen, but anything beyond that is near impossible. Of course I could be more terse, but alas, I refuse to. Case in point, a lot of the online forums I still hang out at have users come in on their cellphones and post short nonsensical posts and then they get pissed at us because we can't figure out what they're asking because they tried to condense a paragraph into a short sentence riddled with typos and abbreviations.

@@Alex-kq2pf you realize that's how things go right? That same bag of chips used to cost 5 cents at some point.
The reason flagship phones cost so much more is because they are fundamentally more complex.
Phones in general have gotten dirt cheap and are widely available with specs you could hardly imagine a decade ago, if you want the cutting edge today you are not really shopping for a better phone but for a showcase of technology. And you know exactly what you are doing.
It's like complaining that modern day supercars are overpriced compared to that chevy nova you bought new with a six banger and three speed stick. The actual market in both cases shows that the lower and middle range of performance and value have never been better! You cant buy a car in america today that wont break 100mph, the Miragebis probably the worst economy car you can buy today yet itll break 125, comes loaded in base form with power windows and locks and tons of other features.
Similarly even the most basic smart phone today is far more than just a means to place a call and the midrange market is filled with affordable options that offer fantastic performance and value. Back to the car analog a modern middle of the road sedan today offers performance on par or better than performance cars of the past, a current Honda Accord will happily run with most 90s Porsches on a road course.
If you are actually shopping top tier phones or cars today you know exactly what you are doing and have no basis to complain about price, it's not like the past where buying premium was required just to get noticeably decent performance from either.

When using the phone for remote access, the special characters are less of an issue than the amount of screen real-estate the on screen keyboard takes up. Especially if you are trying to see everything in landscape mode while RDPing onto something. If I could have that keyboard set up built into a flagship for an extra 100-150 bucks I would probably do it.

I agree. However it has been so long since I've used a physical keyboard phone that I'm nowhere near as fast on one as I used to be. Swipe style virtual keyboards have basically been my go to for many years.
I've tried to go back to my sidekick 4g and as much as I love that phone's keyboard... I'm just nowhere near as fast as I was on my old sidekick 3 and LX 2009.

Regardless of whether it is virtual or physical I can only send like maybe one or two in a minute at best. 2006 me could send like a dozen using my sidekick. Usually most without looking.

I still have my Motorola Milestone and surprisingly it's still functioning well with a custom Rom, the beauty of a physical keyboard shines where you can have your full keyboard along with the entire screen real estate at the same time, and yes, it's very convenient during an RDP session for example.
to go around this other layer of keys I suggest having the switch button (equivalent to shift for example) on the other side of the phone where the shutter key is, but more accessible to the hand like in a game controller where the user can hold it using the index finger while typing with the thumbs.

Hi Linus! there's another reason to buy this phone, and it's the unlocked bootloader, so I can install things like AOSP Android, Lineage Android (in case you don't like Google) or even a pure Linux Operating system like Sailfish OS! :)

  • @Kevin-jb2pv
    @Kevin-jb2pv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Man, there are so many times when a physical keyboard is just so much better:
    - When you want to type something without looking at the phone
    - When it's cold and you're wearing gloves.
    - When it's cold and you _AREN'T_ wearing gloves but you're fingers are frozen.
    - When you are sweaty or kind of wet and your gross hand liquids are smearing all over the screen and making the touch sensor glitch out. (TH-cam is especially bad at this. Sometimes I try to just hit a skip button or tell it to play next... even though autoplay is on... and TH-cam likes to completely shit itself if the touch sensor messes up for even a little bit. Even if I completely clean the screen and dry it, scrolling on TH-cam will be broken and if I'm in picture-in-picture mode then just touching the screen anywhere will cause the mini player to fly all over the place. Not even force stopping the app will fix it, I will _actually have to hard restart the phone to fix this stupidity._ And it's ONLY TH-cam that does this, everything else will work fine, even other videos will play in the mini player without having a fucking seizure.)
    - When you are working in an environment where you have to wear gloves for safety or protection and the touchscreen sensitive ones are not an option.
    - When you want to actually be able to type in landscape mode and see something other than the fucking keyboard
    - Certain mobile gaming like OpenMW or emulators that let you map keyboard inputs.
    - Wanting your special characters to be in their normal goddamn positions and not wherever the keyboard decides to put them.
    - Typing in bright sunlight and you don't want to wreck your battery by putting the screen on max brightness.
    - If you don't have little baby Canada hands and not even a goddamn Note screen is big enough for you to reliably only press one key on the touch screen at a time, but you had zero problem with the much smaller physical keyboard on the LG enV2 because tactile feedback.
    - You have super callous-y fingertips from guitar and manual labor and touch screens don't always like that when making tiny, precise taps, especially if you have a screen protector on.
    - _HAVING ARROW KEYS._ (sometimes, depends on the model. Sometimes it's a little circle D-Pad with an enter button in the middle kinda dealio. Still a definite plus)
    - You like being able to feel your inputs and having the buzzer tickle your fingertips doesn't cut it.

But on a second hidden display which sole use is for productivity scaling .. well pretty display doesnt really matter.

The second I saw the video title, I though I am buying it. And after seeing the video I am definitely buying it. I had phones with physical keyboards till they stopped making them and I held on to my last one till it couldn't hold a charge for more than an hour. I am VERY glad to see them again. It is very annoying to have to find special characters in keyboard apps. And mobile webpages are garbage. I am looking forward to being able to use a websites desktop version, as I can easily use the phone rotated horizontally.
And I really don't get the problem with things being a little thicker. Everything has gotten stupid thin (and flimsy). I remember cellphones (and portable PC's) from the 90's. If they we are as thick as that they would be insanely powerful and your battery would last well over a week. I say make them thicker there is absolutely no harm in it.

There's another aspect to remote server admin type stuff that you missed. Does this thing have special keys like control or arrow keys for example? Because that would be insanely useful. Also not losing screen space to the keyboard. I was developing a plugin on my Nextcloud server from my phone recently and that was a goddamn nightmare...phones make shitty text editors already due to lack of buttons, but add an SSH layer on top of that and it's really quite awful. You lose half the screen to the keyboard, then the app has to add a layer of extra buttons above that, so you're typing in a one inch tall portion of screen. And if you want to go landscape? Well... You basically can't.

    • @BrianMcKee

@Amal Joe Abraham if you already have a keyboard on hand its very likely that youre close to your pc so your obviously going to use that.
I have to agree with @Urza9814 , ssh on a phone is a fucking nightmare. this phone could be really handy if you have to do a lot of server stuff on the go. but man... $700 is just to much for that novelty

    • @Urza9814
      @Urza9814 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Amal Joe Abraham well sure, but then you have to remember to carry a keyboard around all the time too. You *could* get a pocket sized bluetooth on or something (never seen a pocket size wired one) but that's just one more device and one more battery to keep charged....
As for gboard... Without control the arrow keys alone don't help much. Ever use VI or Emacs? Hell, you couldn't even use nano with that... So you still need an extra row of buttons plastered on top of the keyboard by the SSH app (assuming you have one smart enough to add that feature too...not all of them do)

Physiscal keyboards are comingback, as a option. I think that's a good thing ^_^ . From what I know iOS does the onscreen keyboard a bit better than andrioid. Probably because Android needs to get tweaked to a phones particular hardware. I haven't a clue what googles excuse is.

    • @justSomeUserOnYT

Dedicated keyboard worked so smooth. I'm a guy who likes em thicc so I don't mind that either. I'm honestly looking around to see if I can get it at a good price purely for nostalgia purposes.

I think this phone might be handful for people with vision disabilities. They actually love physical keyboards on laptops a lot. They use VoiceOver to read the screen contents (including buttons and so on). You can watch how they type on the phone with touchscreen: they usually use 8 fingers to type and hold their phone upside down.
