Thank you for your tribute post. I have listened to Sykes since he was in Thin Lizzy. I even saw him live with that reunited Thin Lizzy tribute project in the 90s. And he really boosted David Coverdales career and ended up without the cred himself. One of the finest 80s guitarists.
The Fact John looked for lead singers before he sang in Blue Murder says a lot for what he strived for with his guitar playing . Such a great songwriter for ballads as much as his great riff songs. His Two voices will be greatly missed with his scorching guitar playing and his heavenly voice.
Fantastic guitarist, probably the best of his generation, as he presented himself he was a blues-rock guitarist, hard rock but certainly not a metal guitarist. A great loss for the music industry
Great tribute Brendon. John Sykes was amazing such great tone & feel in his playing. He was a monster on Whitesnake '87 as well as Blue Murder. I was fortunate enough to see him live at Lamours in '94 He was awesome of course! RIP - Let's hope that last solo album is released!
What can you say about John Sykes,he was a fantastic guitarist and singer/songwriter,he looked a rocker on stage and seeing him on the Thunder & Lightning tour in Liverpool was incredible! Rip sir ,great memories!
A nice tribute Brendon, John's Death is such a shock. 1987 and Blue Murder are two of my favourite albums of all time. Condolence to John's Family and Friends. R.I.P.
Thank you for the tribute which I thought was very well put. Absolutely superb musician. If you need evidence listen to “Cold Sweat” as referenced. The solo is absolutely phenomenal. My brother went to the states for the first time when the original Blue Murder cd was released. We played it so many times. One of my all time fav albums. RIP John
Very sad to hear of John's passing. He was a great guitarist. If you're a John Cougar Mellencamp fan, I also just heard his bassist from the 80's and 90's, Toby Myers just passed away a few days ago.
One of the true greats of rock guitar, from the foundational era. When you think of the 1980s and early 90s in hard rock or metal, and when you think of "lead guitar", several personalities come to mind...Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Mick Mars, Robbin Crosby of RATT, perhaps also the likes of KK Downing and Glen Tipton (from Judas Priest), and, of course, John Sykes. Talent, song writing style, the poise and the looks of an entire era are defined by them. Some of the guys on this list have passed on, others are still active but getting quite old. It is a sad day every time one of these greats shuffles off his mortal coil!
I was lucky to have seen him twice with Whitesnake on the "Slide It In" tour and then when he was fronting Thin Lizzy with Scott Gorham when they were opening for Deep Purple. Fantastic player, great singer and a loss for all hard rock and metal fans. "Thunder and Lightning" and "Slide It In" are two (2) of my all-time favorite albums and seeing him along with Cozy playing "Crying in the Rain" is a memory that I will always hold a special place for me. Thanks for your rememberace of John's career.
I found Blue Murder's Nothing But Trouble today on ebay and bought it. Always meant to pick that one up. I'll probably grab all his other works as well. Great player/writer, sorry to see him lose the battle with the big C. R.I.P. Sykes!
Great tribute, Brendon. Yes, John was such a huge part of that Whitesnake 1987 record. Not only the hits but deeper cuts like Crying in he Rain, Bad Boys and Straight for the Heart. The follow up is a good record and Steve Vai is a legend too, but it lacked the power of 1987. Blue Murder is still one of my favorite debuts and favorite albums period. Better than his Whitesnake work IMO. Also a big fan of Thunder & Lightning. RIP
I heard Eddie Trunk radio show on Sirius XM Hair Nation. He was close friends with John Sykes and was his favorite player. He took his death really hard and played nothing but music during the broadcast. John’s death has hit all of us. What a terrible loss and sorely missed.
When I first heard the one night only live album I couldn’t believe how much Sykes sounded like Phil. It was almost spooky. What a great tribute. Also check out bad boy live by John Sykes. Another excellent live album.
rock and heavy metal music wouldn't be what it is today without his exceptional talent, definitely an artist i truly admire and his legacy will forever be celebrated.
RIP. I believe he was considered for the Def Leppard slot as well, which he would of been well suited to. TOPT never really hit the same heights after he left.
I'm going out on the limb on this but I think he was on a live Phil Lynott band - Live in Sweden 1983. On Zoom Club Records. I was lucky enough to see him in Minneapolis under the Thin Lizzy reboot band around 2003 ?

From Madrid, Spain..one of the best guitar heros.. inmortal John Sykes forever
RIP John.
One of my favorite 80s guitarists, along with George Lynch. Always wished they had collaborated on some music.
Fantastic guitarist, probably the best of his generation, as he presented himself he was a blues-rock guitarist, hard rock but certainly not a metal guitarist. A great loss for the music industry
David Coverdale has said John Sykes hated blues...I don´t think so...but...
Not only was he a great Lizzy guitarist who helped rejuvenate the band, he was a Thin Lizzy FAN.
RIP John.

Sad News!!! He played live with Whitesnake on the first Rock in Rio 1985... I was there!!!

I bought the Blue Murder CD last night when I heard the news. Such an amazing player😢
Every inch the rock star. Saw him with Whitesnake. He was excellent. Will be sadly missed.
Blue Murder blew me away when I first heard it.
Best hard rock live recording 8:08 - ever!! 🤟🏻🔥🎸

Nothing But Trouble is really great. John produced it himself.
Only got to see him once, with Blue Murder at Hammerjacks in Baltimore. Great show! So much potential with that band.

Good bye, John😢

rock and heavy metal music wouldn't be what it is today without his exceptional talent, definitely an artist i truly admire and his legacy will forever be celebrated.
He wasn’t particularly productive but a true rock star.
RIP John Sykes.

There are 2 more Solo Live Albums available. Bad Boy Live, and Screaming Blue Murder Live
I was thinking. Was Sykes’ face ever on an album cover?
He left Golden Robot so some other label with have the release it.
Nice tribute. I’ll have to give Blue Murder another listen. It never did anything for me in the past, but maybe I’ll “get it” with more mature ears.
