  • The dog's skill of walking beside the trainer is necessary during walks, lessons, and on the job. In addition, it disciplines the dog and makes it pay attention to the trainer. Conditioned stimuli - the "Heel" command and the hand signal of patting the hip with the left hand. The Unconditioned stimuli - jerk of the leash, effect of the chain collar, slight touch with an open hand, petting, and a treat. This technique in introduced beginning with the first lessons. The main training method is the contrastive method. The initial exercises are conducted under favorable conditions on level ground. The developer attaches a short leash to the collar. He/she takes hold of the leash at 10-15 feet from the collar and holds the middle of the leash with his right hand. As soon as he starts walking, he/she gives the "heel" command and 0.5-1 second afterwards jerks the leash in the opposite direction of the dog's movement, forcing it to walk besides the left leg. As soon as the dog assumes the correct position at the trainer's left leg, he rewards the dog by giving it a treat and by petting. During development of the initial conditioned reflex, each "heel" command is accompanied by a jerk of the leash. "heel" command must be given on turns and when stopping and is reinforced, when necessary, by jerk of the leash. The initial conditioned reflex is considered fully developed if upon the "heel" command, the dog assumes a position besides the left leg and walks with the trainer without pulling on the leash. Subsequently, the following complicating variations are introduced teaching the dog to stay beside the trainer at different speeds; controlling the dog by either a command or hand signal alone; teaching the dog to respond reliably in the presence of various distracting stimuli (animals, people, vehicles, birds, etc.) teaching the dog to walk at the trainer's side without the leash. The exercise to develop the conditioned reflex in response to a hand signal goes like this. The trainer takes the leash in his right hand, freeing the left hand for a hand signal. Then he slaps his hand 2-3 times on his hip and every 1-2 seconds gives the "heel" command and jerks the leash. The hand signal is reinforced by the command and jerk of the leash until the hand signal becomes the conditioned stimulus. After that, only the jerk of the leash is used without the "heel" command. During the second and third training phases, a correct response by the dog to the command is reinforced by a treat or by petting. If the dog does not respond correctly, the command is reinforced with a firm "heel" command with threatening intonation and with mandatory use of a mechanical stimulus. TURNS FROM A STATIONARY POSITION. To turn right with the dog, extend your right leg 90 degrees to the right. As soon as you step with your left leg, give the "heel" command. To turn left with the dog, extend your left leg 90 degrees to the left front of the dog's front legs. An about face with the dog, is performed to the right. Turn your right leg 180 degrees to the right and shift your weight in that direction. As you turn, give the "heel" command, and bring the dog to your side as you step with your left leg. The "heel" skill is considered completely developed if the dog assumes the correct position beside the trainer's left leg every time as soon as the signal is given for the first time. If the dog maintains that position at varying speeds, during stationary turns and turns in motion. POTENTIAL TRAINER ERRORS AND THEIR CONSEQUENCES: Improper pairings of conditioned and unconditioned stimuli. Use of excessively strong mechanical stimuli without accounting for the individual dog's behavioral characteristics. Inept use of the chain collar and touch. Frequent repetition of the "heel" command without reinforcement by jerk on the leash; incorrect use of leash.

This is something I need to learn. The best and proper ways to train your dog in some basic commands. I have a few things mastered, but the heel command has always been an issue for me. Just like everything else, the dog has to clearly understand what it is you want before it can begin to do what you want.

Good that you pay attention that ‘fuss’ is the beginning of a good heel. Because some people think dogs are natural followers when off leash. I’ts also importent to tell people when you dog is allowed to be off leash en when you dog must heel. By example, when you are in a park and passing by bikers or passing dogs who are not raised well. Heel means pay attention to your owner all the time. And before that. A very good recall. It’s different when you dog is off leash and follows you and sometimes sniffs around. I think this is the hardest training when dogs are allowed of leash but not have a good heel. My dog heel was hard to learn. Because he was sooo curious, my social butterfly was to busy of meeting people. I love his social character ❤I trained my dog off leash to use a long line the first two years. When we where in training, we used a wall between me and my dog. You get a natural heel position. Some commands you want to learn your dog, depends which breed you have. A hunting dog, like mine, is bred to walk a view steps away from the hunter to locate wild animals and then point. I got to hunting dogs where I look after when their owners have to work. And all have problems with a natural heel. It’s possible, but more practice needed. Thanks for your video.

What a fantastic comment. I especially love the way you stated that you used the long leash for 2 years. Working with our K9 partners takes time, lots and lots of time. As every K9 is different. Thank you for the great information very much appreciated.

My only suggestion would be don't bait across the body as it pulls the dog around you, if the leash is right hand and lure is left handed the dog will heel straight.

Hello from across the oceans. Great point. We must always learn to work with our dogs with different levels of voice threshold. During development work with your K9 in soft tones. Train you K9 to learn when you whisper to him/her. K9s can learn to listen to your commands via walkie talkies. The human voice is connected to your K9 companion and how we use this connection will determine the result. Always change your tones. In development, the creative teacher will always achieve the strongest outcome. Thank you for the comment and K9s 4 America looks forward to reading more from you.

And you can prove that? I doubt it. I am sorry that someone died but to blame this guy for training his dog is not fair. Yes it is very sad an 8 year old died because of dogs. I am also your feeling it so deeply. 😢
