  • Casey Putsch visits Laguna Seca in Monterey California for the Velocity Invitational and visits the CycleKart race. Cyclekarts are small historic racing cars that people build themselves and race all around America on pavement, gravel, and even dirt! Powered by a 4 stroke go kart engine and using spoked motorcycle wheels, people craft them to emulate actual racing cars from history.

    If anyone in the Utah area want to learn more. I have open shop nights at the high school I teach at. Come, learn and drive. Our shop students have 7 done and are building two more this year. We also have set land speed records during world of speed too. A great shop project for both kids and adults.

    What a fantastic class of racing, watched this with my 15 year old son and by the time you read this plans will be well underway to build ours, we may even have to start our own club here in Far North Queensland, Australia, where there are no racing circuits, but heaps of farm bikes and big open spaces. What sounds better than ripping around in a pre war racecar in tropical paradise, doing it for a fraction of the cost, whilst building relationships along the way. Thanks for some inspiration on what to do this Christmas holidays. Hope all is going well in Dubai and that you are driving the Lykan and it's little brother like you stole them mate. Cheers

  • @SoloRenegade
    @SoloRenegade 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Maybe that's a way to start a new racing series?
    Smaller cars, few rules, smaller engines, keep the costs down.
    Have a max track width, max wheel base, max overall length and width, minimum weight, maximum engine size (limited by total cu in volume?), don't allow turbos or supercharging and NOS, maybe a rule such as the solid rear axle and limited to rear wheel drive... Otherwise, go for it. Keep the rules as minimal as possible and allow innovation and keep it accessible. Maybe a few more regarding helmets and other basic safety things. But imagine including pit stops into a series like this too, perhaps? Without restricting fuel carrying, you might opt to skip pitstops to save time, but then you might be running more worn tires, tradeoffs, I don't know?
    But by keeping the vehicle and engine size small like these cyclekarts, the engines remain affordable and accessible, and by limiting total internal engine volume, it becomes an efficiency game regarding HP. More people could enjoy and participate in such a racing series across the nation, without needing deep pockets and lots of space or specialty tools.

    • @bobzdar
      @bobzdar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There already are rules that govern a lot of it (look up Stevenson cycle kart rules), I think there's a general disdain for organizing bodies and the cheating that comes with sanctioned racing in the ck community, so they are looser and not at all tolerant of the type a win at all cost mentality.
      Basically, use a 6.5hp motor and keep the look right and you'll be good, the rest is up to you, but they award more based on spirit and looking the part than any type of speed or race winning.

    • @SoloRenegade
      @SoloRenegade 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobzdar Yes, I get the concern over sanctioning bodies. Eventually when a good thing becomes successful enough, money and corruption takes over and the sport is then ruined. This happens to good businesses that go bad too.

    I wanted robust high profile yet narrow tires for my front but the price per was nearly the same as the 16hp engine i bought. I had to settle for 18.5 x 6.5 tires (the right height but the width makes it so i must redesign the front end so everything is as robust as the tires and rims. My kart has 5/8" spindles, nuteral caster and camber and i have to change all of that. Including the tubing used in the knuckle and supports -- what a mess.
