Actual it works well enough to have! Most of these seem to do little work, but you are moving along pretty well with this one! Several hands could not keep up with your digger! Five star!
I remember a long time ago you could buy fully built versions of these at Northern Hydraulics (now Northern Tool) think those went for about $7000 or so and were already built. Think the ones for more had hydraulic stabilizers. I always loved home built equipment. You can have great quality and spend about half or less than half the cost of a manufactured machine.
+Ratkill9000 Thanks for commenting. I would build another one in a heart beat as it is handy as hell. I would go with hydraulic outriggers as they are heavy and a lot of work to setup and make other improvements. Going to build a wood splitter next, will try to video that build. Still trying to figure out the design out.
I know I'm 7 years late commenting how ever I did watch this a few years ago along with so many others showing the build like 500passwords. That being said, I just finished building a backhoe after watching isavetractors build on a garden tractor. I am so glad I did it. My land has as many stones as dirt making hand shoveling next to impossible. Spent around 6 hours doing what would have been close to 20 hours by hand. I'm thinking joysticks would be easier to operate how ever went old school with separate sticks.
Norm Howes thanks for watching and commenting!! My land too has a lot of rocks in it also. But I found a million other way to use this little hoe other than digging, I cut a ton of fire wood and I use it to pick up logs for cutting, also have took it to off site places to load logs and dig treacherous. Make a good crane as I don’t have much help. Will pick up a lot with counter weight added to the tongue end. The joystick do make it easer to operate. So Thanks Again for your comment.
Lookin to buy towable backhoe and had videos on tv on auto play, I heard yours before I saw it and knew it was a better quality. I watched for a while and said who's brand backhoe is this....been watching dr power, harbor freight etc...for weeks now, yours is such good quality! If you made this you did awesomeness job!
catbirdfeeder Thanks for viewing!! I did build this although I started with a set of plans from a web site that's now off the web. The site was ubuilditplans.com and the sold towable backhoe plans, go cart plans and parts. I add a larger engine and hydraulic pump than called for so it performs better than most. If you like building thing a plan/kit is the way to go.
You will have a great time building this. Getting the angles on the axles just right was what I spent the most time on but this thing pulls great. Also the dipper arm was a lot of work. Take your time and if you get fustrated stop on it for a bit or you will be fixing a mistake later. Get on ebay and find some hand reamers I now own 4 Thanks for watching, Have Fun
@84AMA Thanks I'm glad you liked it. Been trying to respond but having trouble, Not sure total cost as I had a lot of salvaged and free drops (all the flat plate material)to work from, but the hydraulics is the most expense part. I spent about $1800 on the hydraulic and then had to hose it up another $250. The engine was from a Ariens 17 hp Z trun mower that I salvaged. Plans are from Ubuilditplans which were good help to.
People just have to send negative comments and thumbs downs. You're digging a clean trench in virgin ground, and didn't have to rent or buy a commercial hoe to do it. I get that you're not going to do major excavation work with a light tool.... maybe those guys don't. Kudos.
Thanks Steve, negative comments don't bother me much as opinion are like assholes, everyone has one. I had a blast building it, love to operate it and use it year round. Thanks for watching.
@drumstick471 Thanks for the comments! I made a few changes from what the plans called for. The pump is a Prince SP20B06 and it has 6 gpm @ 3600 rpm so I can run it at just a little above a idle and it is almost to fast. I got flow restrictor in the swing circuit to slow it down because it was. I love the two stick setup although it added a lot of extra plumping. Have you done any video of yours at work yet, would love to see running. Need to see yours digging!!!
I spent about $2500 but I had a donor engine, hydraulic tank and all the flat plate. If you were buying everything it would get near $4000. I could have spent less but it wouldn't have looked as good. I got the plans from Ubuilditplans. Thanks for watching!!
Thanks I'm glad you like it. The valves are from Baileynet and they are a hydraulics supplier in Knoxiville Tennesse, I don't see these valve in there catalog anymore but they have a good tech line and may ha a alternative. These valve that I'm using are there Chief brand 2 spool joystick valve, one has the power beyond to feed the other valve. They are just like loader valve without the float or regen. Hope that helps..
@flyinasscritter No, not really but Thanks because I didn't want it to look homemade. I built it from a set of plans which I adjusted to fit my material I had available and purchased ( store bought ) sum. That ditch I was digging I was playing with, trying to learn how to run it. It took about 20 min. to dig.
I'm sure there is something out there if you look around on the web. If you like to building things the plans like I built this from can be bought for a three point tractor. Thanks for watching!!!
I built it from plans from ubuilditplans on the net. I have about $2500 in but I had a free engine, hydraulic tank and all of the flat plate steel free to use. About $1500 in freebee that I didn't have to buy. Thanks for watching.
+Robert Glenn There is a whole hobby building these things, and for the most part they are a big step up from the HF and online ones. Your mileage may vary.
Thanks for watching. Built it from plans that I bought online. It's called a Ground Hawg, They were from ubuilditplans and they sale plans and supply's to build towable backhoe and other homemade toys. You can spend $2000 to $4000 building one depending on what you can recycle from something else. I had a lot of free metal drops and engine and hydraulic tank to reuse. Hope this answer your question.
I built it from plans from ubuilditplans. If you google that you can find the plans. I have other videos on the build of this machine. Thanks for watching.
+Айрат Фархутдинов Спасибо за просмотр. Я купил планы и построен из много запасных частей, которые я переработанных. Не уверен, что вы могли бы получить в вашей части мира, но может быть в состоянии получить Китайская модель может быть. Удачи!!
Just type in ubuilditplans this is were I got my plans from and watched a lot of video from a dude that goes be password 500, chill you an 18 pack and start watching, he also has some realy good music that he plays.

You build nice machine.
Im new to tractors. Question could I buy a backhoe for a farm tractor? say the Mahindra 6110 for example?
that looks like the store bought kind , are you sure you built that. how long did it take to dig that trench a month or ?
I have these plans, but have not built it yet. Looks like the same red clay I have. How does it do with rocks in the red clay?
I purchase these plans, but have not built it yet. What was the hardest part of the build? Thanks!

Very good job! Could you tell which

how much does it cost ? where we can get it. cool !!
Ubuildit seems to be out of business. I built ground hawg years ago - but now looking for plans for thumb. Can I get a copy from you?
I’ll see if I can find mine. I modified mine so it would fold up against and pin to the stick when not in use, also beefed it up as I broke it also.
Do you have a part number for the oil filter? I would like to replace mine but cant find the number. My filter is all yellow with no markings. Thanks
I would like to buy how much it costs
Great job, good on you.
I was thinking of buying one from harbor freight but after reading the reviews I backed out
