    One of the best musicals ever made. A proper story and outstanding music.

    I watched this when I was 7 years old and just watched the whole thing as an adult. Wow , it's a perfect 10. The lift seen was hilarious, the plot the rhythm , west side rooftop scene. I only remember fragments..what a delight after all that time to put it all together ..magic..Shirley you are wonderful a real gem. I wish for films like this again. If only.

    This was the first movie that Bob Fosse directed. When it opened in the late 1960's it bombed. Universal spent a ton of money to bring this to the screen. Fosse's next film was a little movie called Cabaret. He won an Oscar for directing the film.
    He won out over Franics Ford Coppola for the Godfather.

    When I seen the first ep. of Fosse/Verdon couldn’t believe when they said Sweet Charity flopped as a film!This has always been one of my favorite films since I first seen it on tv in the early seventies when I was a child.Still love it!Love all the songs!Would have liked to seen Gwen Verdon in the Broadway musical.

      The Broadway show was way superior to the film. By making everything bigger and more hectic on the screen, Fosse lost sight of the original play, sadly. The play was a fable. The film was, apart from the dancing, a mess.

    Saw this movie as a child. Still ranks up there with the greatest, i.e. West Side Story and Cabaret.

    thanks you so much for posting this, one of my favorite movies, which i have not had the chance to see in such a long time... and, now that I have seen this scene again, i wonder how i could have forgotten how major this is! so many showstoppers from that movie alone. it is mind-blowing.

    Every bit as good as Cherise et al. A great star, in every sense of the word. In my opinion, under-recognised for her talents.

      Don't forget Gwen Verdon, who originated the role on Broadway. Gwen taught Shirley all of her dance moves, even after being bypassed because she was not a big enough star.

    Someone loves me!
    Someone loves me!
    Someone loves me,
    My heart is beating so fast.
    All kinds of music is pouring out of me,
    Somebody loves me at last!
    Now...
    I'm a brass band,
    I'm a harpsichord;
    I'm a clarinet!
    I'm the Philadelphia Orchestra,
    I'm the Modern Jazz Quartet!
    I'm the band from Macy's Big Parade.
    A wild Count Basie blast!
    I'm the bells from Saint Peter's in Rome
    I'm tissue paper on a comb...
    And all kinds of music
    Is pouring out of me 'cause...
    Somebody loves me...at last!
    Chorus:
    She's a brass band,
    She's a harpsichord,
    She's a clarinet!
    Charity:
    That's me!
    Chorus:
    She's the Philadelphia Orchestra,
    She's the Modern Jazz Quartet!
    She's a brass band,
    She's a harpsichord,
    She's a clarinet!
    She's the Philadelphia Orchestra,
    She's the Modern Jazz Quartet!
    She's the band from Macy's Big Parade
    A wild Count Basie blast!

    So much effort and energy goes into trying to make this number a showstopper on film, yet it's not even a quarter as good as the stage version with Gwen Verdon (a TV performance of which you can find on here).

    This movie cost $20 million to make, but made only $8 million at the box office. Fosse filmed an alternate ending where Oscar leaves his tiny apartment and goes for a walk in Central Park. He sees Charity on their bridge and thinks she is going to jump. Racing to rescue her, he trips and falls in the water. Charity jumps in after him, but can't swim so Oscar rescues her. Oscar realizes Charity is the only one for him, proposes again, and she accepts. Fosse thought the ending was too corny. It was not used, sticking to the original script.

      and yet the happy ending makes more sense. The movie begins in the park with a spill in the water, and it makes more sense to end that way as if it came first circle. The sad ending was too awful, like having your heart clawed out, unlike Nights of Cabria (the italian movie this is based upon) whose ending was bittersweet. I wish the theatrical release kept with the happy ending, and luckily the DVD version has both so people can see which they like better. I will go with happy as it fits the entire movie better - in my opinion. Thanks for sharing!

      @MrMjp58 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I quite like the ending they used - with the flower children etc, but I think the alternative [you described so well] would have made for a more satisfying summing-up.
      Just my opinion.

    • @rr7firefly
      @rr7firefly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrMjp58 Someone could write an entire book with all the alternate endings to movies. Some movies have been so drastically re-written, to the point that they have little resemblance to the original version. You may enjoy seeing the video that explains in great detail how George Lucas' wife Marcia completely re-made the first Star Wars movie. Without her expert film editing that movie would not have been the smash hit it was. She won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing in 1977 for her work.

      There was another version of this ending filmed (a third one). I was in a drum and bugle corps from Long Island and we were hired along with a second corps from NYC that we used to compete against. We filmed the ending overnight at the Lincoln center fountain. It went on for hours with us doing the same thing over and over. We were pretty exhausted by the time we were done. I remember a bunch of us going to see the movie and being disappointed as we had no idea that they weren’t using our version of the brass band segment.

    • @rr7firefly
      @rr7firefly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drummerc1795 Ah man, thanks for remembering all that and writing about it. It sounds like typical moviemaking, all those takes and all the unused film footage. My friend David is a film editor in Studio City and he told me how that usually happens. Gave me a vivid account of the movie "Imagine" -- all the deleted scenes, etc. "Sweet Charity" seems like something from another world. And maybe that is because it was filmed such a long time ago. It's a good document of where people's heads were at back then.
