  • Garry Adelman, Doug Douds and Chris Mackowski detail the wounding of Union General Dan Sickles in The Wheatfield. Sickles would end up having to have his leg amputated later in the day, but puffed on a cigar during his journey to try and raise the spirits of his men. The experts then dive into the stand of the 9th Massachusetts Battery at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 and describe the action at The Trostle Farm.
This video is part of our commemoration series for the 157th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

I've been reading about the Civil War for almost 30 years and I somehow missed Bigelow's battery retiring by recoil. Those are some heroic artillerymen. Let's all remember their bravery in helping to save the United States.

You guys do great work BUT I am one of those visitors that drives by the monument that says "monument at Culps Hill". Could not hear what you were saying because the sound was bad. Next time I go down I'll look at the plaque behind myself. Thank you for all you do. Keep up the good work.

My great great uncle was a Sergeant in the 19th Indiana Infantry of the famous Iron Brigade. He was killed in action on the first day at Gettysburg. He's still there today, buried in the Soldiers National Cemetery.

I have been a Civil War buff since I was a young girl, growing up in Virginia and Louisiana, two states with LOTS of Civil War history.. I am enjoying these videos very much. The pictures are a helpful and interesting addition to give the watcher perspective and a frame of reference when trying to “see” the battle from the narrative. Good job, Gents! I have already marked your following videos for watching as well..

My great-great-grandpa was captured in the Wheatfield. I have no use for Dan Sickles! He has a way of getting talked about as an amusing character. No one mentions him as the man who caused a lot of unnecessary misery and death! That part is slid over in a few words. What is dwelt on are the cute stories about how he, "puffed on a cigar during his journey to try and raise the spirits of his men." Phooey!

To preserve a 'realistic look' of civil war Napoleon cannon, on the Battlefield: why doesn't the National Park Service use a clear epoxy covering over the original bronze surface? That way the green (copper based salt/s) corrosive layer wouldn't form. Even if the clear epoxy idea isn't physically or economically feasible, surely today, we could have/develop an economic clear surface preservative that would do this job?

I need to defend Sickles. Riddle me this. If Sickles had been in original position, Longstreet would have had an easier time on D2 and Meade would have had to move troops around anyway. Sure their lines would have been more compact, but Longstreet would not have had been mauled. I think Sickles is getting a bad wrap.

Sickles was a drunk and corrupt politician from NY and he brought on a disasterous slaughter of his troops at Gettysburg. There may be a lesson here for us:)
