In Australia, health care is a right and gun ownership is a privilege. In America, gun ownership is a right and health care is a privilege. Some people really need to readjust their sights.
Absolutely. Lack of real affordable health care even for people who have decent jobs and "good benefits" in America is outrageous. Literally almost every American and their family is just 1 major illness away from financial ruin. Healthcare reform should be at the top of the political agenda, firearm reform should be up there too, but NOTHING AT ALL is being done about either. Insulin costs hundreds of dollars for each monthly supply now in America, literally diabetics across the nation are having to chose vital medicine or food/rent/gas and NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT!
schwoogie78 It must really piss you off that, given the choice between owning guns and affordable health care for themselves and their families, the overwhelming majority would choose health care.
@Scurello3 To paraphrase, he said, 'In the US you can order a gun from Walmart for $1000, while, in Australia the same gun would cost you $34000 on the black market.'
mshesh16 No he’s making a valid point, why there are no mass shootings with homemade guns in countries with gun control? Could it be that machining a gun is something that is beyond the reach of the insane? Or the common thug? Here in Canada there was a case where it happened and the guy got caught because he did it with borrowed equipment. Turns out having the right tools is harder than getting a gun on the black market...
Every time there's a mass shooting in the States, my blood boils about how nothing changes... then I watch this and at least get a laugh to move on from a sad sad situation.
I live in Japan, where gun violence is so rare, it makes the news if a *police officer* uses his firearm!! No joke, 99.99% of the time, they use only nightsticks. They're also trained in judo.
bert smith But gun deaths aren’t one of them. Aren’t you the moron who said your violence problems was due to the presence of black people a few comments earlier? That was your best argument against guns AND inbreeding!
mshesh16 it would make sense if they didn’t have any form of gun control, yet they consider their fellow Japanese as dangerous as anybody else. There are other countries with both gun control and diverse ethnic groups. The UK, Canada, France, Australia and they still have fewer murders and gun violence than the US.
But he still misses the main issue... Americans want to protect their way of life forever... that's a long time in case you didn't notice. Americans want to be prepared to defend their rights to the death if the need arises. That's really what the second amendment is for... he's obviously being a comedian here, but he's also serious. Reform in the US is absolutely necessary but we have to come up with lasting solutions so that in 300 years if some douche dictator takes over the American political system, the people will have some response.

I have watched this bit atleast 10 times or more since it first came out. It is the best standup bit ever performed on stage regarding this political issue. Thanks Jim. He should be proud of this bit. This is great legacy to be remembered for.
It is NOT a political issue anywhere else but the U.S. It is a public safety issue. Before the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, from Australia's revolving doors rotating knives occasionally and randomly burst out and cut people into pieces and when the (literally) bleeding heart left wanted them outlawed, the Conservatives never made it a "political issue".
We could remove the 2nd Amendment, at least in theory, but we would still have the right. We don't have the right because of the 2nd Amendment. We have the 2nd Amendment because we have the right, and this is true of all the rights recognized in the Bill of Rights. The only difference if we removed the 2nd Amendment would be that government could then legally infringe the right to keep and bear arms, but a government that can legally infringe rights is not a legitimate government. The Bill of Rights is a limit on government power.

As an Australian I can confirm. We have a constitution. I also never read it. If we have a problem, we'll look it up but right now it's time for a cold one.

@@nateasonjames , While true, a per capita breakdown can be a bit misleading. Most of the countries that are higher than us are also a lot smaller, many smaller than our larger cities. Outsiders all over the world have been talking about this exact thing for years. I almost feel like we're more concerned about what happens to Americans than the Americans who defend the second amendment (even after mass shootings).
Just to be clear. Australians can and do own guns. We just restrict semi automatic assault rifles. If a a 10 round pump like a Remington 7600 is not enough weapon for you then you are hunting the wrong animals 🇦🇺👍🏻
The only purpose for assault weapons is to hunt and slaughter as many people as possible. Americans demonstrate how effective this is every week or so!
Gary Plummer well where do you stop? Under the term “assault weapon” that applies to rifles, shotguns and pistols. So are you gonna van all of them? And, criminals demonstrate that every week, criminals that get their guns illegally and use them in gang crime
It's kind of interesting that the USA was colonised (primarily) by rather zealous religious people and Australia (primarily) by 'criminals' who were shipped there, but that it's Australia who're actually making an effort to control gun crime (and succeeding).
@Nathan Woodason, plenty of people handed in their guns. What’s significant is that Australia banned possession of rapid fire guns. That’s had an impact on the number of gun deaths whether suicide or homicide.
@John Smith, what’s your point? The US constitution was written in the 18th century. Many of the contributors to the constitution believed in a deity although not necessarily a Christian one.

Yep. Every sane Australian shakes their head in both despair and disgust whenever a new US shootings occurs. And we never have to wait long for the next one. OP may not speak for all of Australia, but I believe he speaks for the overwhelming majority. The US's unhealthy and reckless obsession with firearms is something most other countries simply do not understand. Japan has a very high percentage of firearm owners. But the types of guns available to them are very restricted, and they have to pass strict safety training etc. to obtain their licence. They have a lot of guns, and practically no gun crime - because the citizens believe in gun control and gun safety and are responsible.
Like a wise man once said: What's the difference between a yoghurt and the USA? If you leave Yogurt alone for 300 years, it will develop a culture. Plus, it's fat free :D

Here some articles from that Declaration of rights IN the current constitution:: Article I - Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions can be founded only on the common good. Article II - The goal of any political association is the conservation of the natural and imprescriptible rights of man. These rights are liberty, property, safety and resistance against oppression. (..) Article IV - Liberty consists of doing anything which does not harm others: thus, the exercise of the natural rights of each man has only those borders which assure other members of the society the fruition of these same rights. These borders can be determined only by the law. (...) Article VI - The law is the expression of the general will. All the citizens have the right of contributing personally or through their representatives to its formation. It must be the same for all, either that it protects, or that it punishes. All the citizens, being equal in its eyes, are equally admissible to all public dignities, places, and employments, according to their capacity and without distinction other than that of their virtues and of their talents. (...) Article XI - The free communication of thoughts and of opinions is one of the most precious rights of man: any citizen thus may speak, write, print freely, except to respond to the abuse of this liberty, in the cases determined by the law. Article XII - The guarantee of the rights of man and of the citizen necessitates a public force: this force is thus instituted for the advantage of all and not for the particular utility of those in whom it is trusted. (...) Article XVII - Property being an inviolable and sacred right, no one can be deprived of private usage, if it is not when the public necessity, legally noted, evidently requires it, and under the condition of a just and prior indemnity. And in the last Constitution it further includes "Social welfare, which means that everybody must be able to access free public services and be helped when needed". Pretty sweet, lots of the same rights granted to us at birth and no need to arm the fuck out of every citizen (for profit) in order for those basic freedom rights to be covered. The US has the hightes rates of incarceration per capita - for the land of freedom, it's ironic isn't it?, the highest rate of mass murders in a so called 1st world country. It's ridiculous at this point. And little health care help for people with mental issues - cause health care isn't in your Consitution is it? It's a great combo for disaster. So disasters happen. And it's so true. Just recently there was a big fuss because it turns out that you can't hold a seat in our federal parliament if you're a dual citizen, but several of them didn't have their lawyers check. Several of them had to step down, because they didn't check the constitution.
It shows that if things are working you don't need to have your countries constitution memorised which until I did my law degree back home in Australia is true. I had never seen a copy of it, read any of it because as a country we work.
"I take drugs like a fucking champion! But we can't because Sarah took drugs and stabbed her fucking kids. THANKS SARAH!" I feel this joke in my SOUL! lol
When you really look into it the reason why many vices were criminalized in the first place is because criminalizing vices empowered the collaboration between intelligence agencies, police, and mafia organizations. The C.I.A. works primarily within the underworld of countries around the world (as the F.B.I. does domestically) as people within it are vulnerable and compromised and therefore easily recruited, protected status can be granted, and dirt can be collected to gain leverage on people who look for their vices there, gaining intelligence agencies leverage on people within legal organizations they wish to infiltrate in foreign countries.

In Australia, health care is a right and gun ownership is a privilege. In America, gun ownership is a right and health care is a privilege. Some people really need to readjust their sights.
This!
Nicely said buddy
I need to borrow your post. You speak the truth.

mshesh16 No he’s making a valid point, why there are no mass shootings with homemade guns in countries with gun control?
Could it be that machining a gun is something that is beyond the reach of the insane? Or the common thug?
Here in Canada there was a case where it happened and the guy got caught because he did it with borrowed equipment. Turns out having the right tools is harder than getting a gun on the black market...

"If you can't change something called an 'amendment,' you need a thesaurus more than you need a constitution." FUCKING BRILLIANT!

They have a lot of guns, and practically no gun crime - because the citizens believe in gun control and gun safety and are responsible.
Japan does not have very high gun ownership. I have been there and been involved with hunting there.

that right there sums up pretty much every Australian's view of our constitution, and a lot of other countries too. a constitution is not some sacred holy text that must be understood by every individual it applies to and followed constantly and can never be changed. it's just a bunch of rules put in place for how a country should be governed, and if the people of the country agree one of those rules doesn't really work then we can just change or remove it. America, your constitution is not special.

But I don't agree with what he says about protection being overrated. There are also a lot more issues at play with the US than with the UK and Australia when it comes to giving up guns. Many gun owners would give up their guns if the government threatened them with prison (or death by SWAT) to include me, but A LOT of people would not and there would be a massive amount of guns in the hands of criminals who would now be emboldened by the fact that most people don't have guns and the ones that do may be too scared to even use them for fear of being sent to prison.

And NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO MOVE TO THE US. It's a myth now. As a matter of fact, many American friends have moved or will move to Mexico or Canada. And most of my Mexican and European friends would never move to the US. The people that want to move to the US often come from a place where they have it worse. I didn't say it's "so bad". But I do think a lot of things suck and could be changed. Therefore it's great when someone talks about them.
@@AlwaysHereAndNow there's about 30,000,000 Mexicans who would disagree with your Mexican friends and more people are trying to get here than aren't because we've allowed our politicians to give away this country and our birthright away out from under us so that the whole system is designed to lure people in, be it legally or otherwise at the expense of those already citizens here.
As for universal background checks? We have a background check system that works just fine. The problem is that states aren't required to report to it so not all do. I have no idea why that is but fix that one issue and it works just fine.
You and your Mexican friends don't want to live here? Lol, cool. We are in agreement then. It does keep a nice leash on gov't though. It isn't perfect but it's better than most and has served the citizens of this nation pretty well since it's creation. As much as you have dangerous areas, you have very safe and beautiful areas as well where I promise you no one beheads anybody.
To get it straight, I never said I didn't want to live in the US although sometimes I question it. I have been living in the US for 5 years, spent 3 years in Canada before and I'm originally from France where there are issues but mass murders and gun violence aren't one.
It's pretty delusional to say your Constitution is placing "limits on intrusion of the government into your lives". What century do you live in? You know nothing about mass surveillance in your country? Did the Snowden revelations teach you anything about your own government? The american government will be all up in your biz the second it decides to -unless you help pass laws that actively limit that- and your guns won't help a bit. Plus like Jim says, do you really see yourself holding up against the american military with your hand guns? You can't pride yourself of having the strongest military in the world AND being able to keep it under your control with guns. Gotta pick.
I don't know all the Constitutions out there, but the "preamble of the (French) constitution recalls the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen from 1789 and establishes France as a secular and democratic country, deriving its sovereignty from the people."
Here some articles from that Declaration of rights IN the current constitution::
Article I - Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions can be founded only on the common good.
Article II - The goal of any political association is the conservation of the natural and imprescriptible rights of man. These rights are liberty, property, safety and resistance against oppression.
(..)
Article IV - Liberty consists of doing anything which does not harm others: thus, the exercise of the natural rights of each man has only those borders which assure other members of the society the fruition of these same rights. These borders can be determined only by the law.
(...)
Article VI - The law is the expression of the general will.
(...)
Article XI - The free communication of thoughts and of opinions is one of the most precious rights of man: any citizen thus may speak, write, print freely, except to respond to the abuse of this liberty, in the cases determined by the law.
Article XII - The guarantee of the rights of man and of the citizen necessitates a public force: this force is thus instituted for the advantage of all and not for the particular utility of those in whom it is trusted.
(...)
Article XVII - Property being an inviolable and sacred right, no one can be deprived of private usage, if it is not when the public necessity, legally noted, evidently requires it, and under the condition of a just and prior indemnity.
I don't know other constitutions but I bet the other ones in Europe say the same basic things.
Until the majority will realize that the damage done is greater than the perceived safety.

+JubalBed yeah i live in Australia and know a few people who have guns. its not about banning them, its about making them harder to get.
+CK the only problem with australian way is that you can't have "self defense" as a reason, and I think that is valid reason to own a gun. Here, in czech republic, you can get it just by having that reason (and you don't even have to have a proof, which is good, because who knows if they will need it in the future?) and you automatically get CCW if you have that reason.

This is a sane view. Banning all guns is extreme and more or less impossible to enforce. But just letting anyone have any gun is extreme and insane too. So let gun nuts have their guns, but require ammo to be kept at firing ranges or something like that. Let them fire their guns, but in specific areas so people don't get killed from stray bullets.
