Exactly this. Poor management of resources. One of the advantages of having a rookie QB is that you only have to pay them a paltry sum of money (as a % of the cap) for the first 3 years of their careers. In the first 3 years of Penix's career they will not be able to take advantage of how little he is earning given that Kirk will have a $25M dead cap hit 3 years from now.

Well when you look at a deal. Kirk Cousins contract is only for about 100 million guaranteed, and realistically for two years. Which means assuming Kirk Cousins stays healthy and wins a minimum of ten games the Falcons would be needing a quarterback as a backup in two years, but their drafting position in the first round would be something like 22 to 26 in the first round draft. At that pick you not going get good 1st round quarterback, and you will overpay for a bad second round quarterback.

@@RedHoodFH Yes, but New York Giants are in a different position. They have already sign Daniel Jones to a contract. Dan said the Falcons had the 11th best defense as if that’s really good and can’t possibly be improved on. No look at Kirk Cousins contract, his guaranteed money is only for two years. Which means means you only have a two year contract. This forces the owner and GM to start looking for a college quarterback in two years. But assuming that Kirk Cousins stay healthy and wins 10 games each season in a weak AFC South division the Atlanta Falcons would be drafting in the 22 to 26 position of the first around draft. That position will not get you a top 1st round draft pick at quarterback coming out of college. You would have to overdraft a bad 2nd round draft pick in the late 1st round, and hope he can be a starter for you in Atlanta.

Honestly with this, it feels like it is very neutral. Signing a QB like Cousins on the team along with the new offensive players before the draft was good. However, the QB with Mike is what messed everything up during that first round. I get where Coach Ra & Fontenot were going since Penix Jr’s got an arm but he will be good within the near future and let’s not talk about the missed CB that we should have focused on.

Why is it so hard to understand? You have Kirk to make a run to the playoffs for two years then trade him for your long term plan at QB when all the skill players will be in their 20s. Furthermore you don't want to end up like the Patriots, Broncos, Saints, Steelers, the Falcons after Ryan running through QBs because you didn't have a plan. You want the Farve to Aaron, Aaron to Love, Smith to Mahomes, Flaco to Lamar plan where you have a vet for the young QB to learn from for a year or 2 with already solid roster to set them up for success.

This was a bad move for everyone except for the organization. Penix(24, old for a rookie) is gonna have to sit for 3-4 years unless Cousins drastically falls off, now even more pressure is put on Cousins to perform, coaches have to implement additional plays for Penix in case of emergency, and the locker room is going to get divided. Really a poor draft. They should just let the chips falls where they fall and then tank for Shedeur next year if they really want a qb for the future.

With Kirk they have a team rn that is favorite to win the division (let me remind you they went 7-10 last year when their QBs had more turnovers than the offense scored TDs)...and they went and got their favorite QB of the draft to develop behind Kirk and be ready to compete when his number is called.
Plus, 72% of the teams last year were forced to play their backup QB bc of an injury or poor play...and with Kirk coming off a complete achilles tear, it's smart to have a quality backup...why did they give Kirk that money? Cause they do believe he can carry this team to the playoffs...why did they draft Penix? Bc they are likely not going to have another 1st round pick for the next 2-3 years bc of the tampering, rn is their best chance to get a QB.

So did Dan, multiple times. I think my favorite was when he brought up Jordan Love as if that proves he was right, when in fact the Packers didn’t win a Super Bowl after that, which means it was a failure if your goal is to win a Super Bowl. He also said QBs play longer which means Penix could be sitting longer, and he said drafting defense in rounds 2-4 was a good move but drafting defense in round 1 wouldn’t have been? This pick makes no sense which is why no one can make sense of it.

Really Shannon? Yes, for a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2017, an owner will pay $100 million to win a division at minimum. If it’s the money, that’s what that’s about. You’re wrong when you consider how inept they’ve been for that amount of time.
If it’s about Penix and his age or whatever, 10 years of quality QB play is worth its own $100 mil value within itself. Look at how bad the teams that have been without a QB have been and for how long… the Bears just got the number 1 overall pick after decades of subpar QB play. If the QB you want is there you take them, period. You can’t win without one regardless

It's also a fact that Pitts, London and Bijan are all 22 years old and have not had a good QB to take them to the next level. Another fact, Kirk will do that for them just in time for Penix to take over in 2 years. The final fact is that this move is for the FUTURE not this upcoming season, you and 70% of this comment section seem to think that this next year is the final NFL season and the Falcons ruined their last chance to win.
