  • This is an extract from my book, Papa Kilo Part 1: A true story from a Susi Air pilot in Indonesia.
The audio is combined with REAL footage of landing in Ilu, a "Grade 3" mountain strip in the Papua highlands. Like many other mountain strips, Ilu has a committal point. In other words, past a certain point, we can NOT go around due to the high terrain surrounding the runway. We need to get the approach right the first time. There are NO second chances.
I've received some great feedback from Papa Kilo: A True Story of a Susi Air Pilot in Indonesia. If you'd like to check my reviews, or buy my book, you can do so here from Amazon:

@0:51 ~ I don’t know, it feels like someone might be able to do a go around if they turn to the left to go between the mountains while they build up the ability to climb over them. But that said, I’m not a pilot so I don’t necessarily know what I’m talking about. Maybe if it’s good weather without any wind and that could be done, but if the wind hits in the wrong direction any make a little error then it could be a huge problem. I don’t know. It does remind me of there is no go around airport called St. Lucia, or something like that. There’s a video online of an airplane during the supposedly first known go around after over shooting the runway. The spectators thought he was going to crash at first because they never known of anybody going around at the airport.
But thank you for posting your videos. I just recently found your channel. It’s too bad that vlogs of Bush pilots wasn’t so popular when you were working for Susi air because then you could’ve been another mini series to the “worst place to be a pilot“ show.
