    QuTS Hero
    Faced with the explosive growth of data, VDI popularity, increasing SSD adoption, 8K media, and other disruptive IT trends, modern businesses need dependable storage systems to meet future demands. QNAP’s new “QuTS hero” operating system combines the app-based QTS with a 128-bit ZFS file system to provide flexible storage management, comprehensive data protection and optimized performance to meet the needs of business-critical applications.
    The 128-bit ZFS filesystem has huge capacity potential and supports native handling of standard RAID levels and additional ZFS RAID layouts (RAID Z). ZFS-based QNAP storage solutions provide up to 5 PB capacity for individual shared folders, enabling enterprises to tackle storage-demanding applications including Big Data analysis, edge computing, and AI. Designed to deal with petabytes of data, RAID Z quickly handles creating ready-to-use high-capacity RAID.
    Inline data deduplication is block-based and runs before data is written to storage. This dramatically optimizes storage usage while significantly decreasing storage capacity requirements. Coupled with inline compression and inline compaction technologies, ZFS substantially reduces the overall storage footprint - beneficial for increasing SSD storage efficiency when highly repetitive data or massive small files are generated. All-flash solutions thus achieve higher cost efficiency while improving both random write performance and SSD lifespan.

    QTS 5.0 builds upon its solid foundations with an updated system kernel and optimized user interface - followed by enhanced security measures to protect your digital assets, improved system performance to streamline your applications, and integrated AI machine learning to strengthen image recognition and drive failure prediction. Providing cutting-edge features to meet the challenge of rapid technological changes, QTS 5.0 brings you data security, power, and intelligence.
    The new kernel improves PCIe performance, which enables QTS 5.0 to enhance NVMe SSD performance and utilization. When cache acceleration is activated, SSD storage can be utilized more efficiently while also offloading memory resources. It maintains high performance even when multiple concurrent users access the same shared folders, and transferring large-size files via SMB/NFS becomes faster.

    Excellent subject! We are on the move from our dozens of QTS to QuTS Hero. What I personally really like about QuTS Hero is the performance.
    Yes, QTier would have been nice within QuTS Hero however, QTier is underwater quite complex so, I personally believe it is a set-and-forget and not something you want to play around with too much, unless you engage QNAP Support. (or you will loose data, as in our case, where we opted to turn it off without due diligence)
    I also do believe QuTS Hero is more future-proof also looking at what QNAP has released in the recent QuTS Hero updates. I would also proclaim that next to the 8Gb RAM requirement (16GB is indeed better), an processor similar to an Intel i5 is really recommended. And, of course, with any ZFS system, a UPS is a requirement. In all, QuTS Hero is really worth your efforts and consideration.

    I'm running a TS-873A, but with only 4 drives these days atm. 4 x 12TB drives, if I was purchasing again I'd go for the TS-673A model. Running QuTS and have 2 x NVMe drives installed too. Went back and forth re QTS and QuTS, but ended up sticking with QuTS, with my use case TBH either would have been sufficient. Originally I was going to run 8 x 4TB drives, but when 4 of the drives turned up DOA I didn't bother. 8 x in a RAID6 was the plan.

    If there is one thing "against" QuTS Hero, I would say that the free space is a few percentages (about 10% max?) less free space compared to the same system but on QTS. But as a die-hard QTS user since 2002, I can say the interface of QuTS Hero is pretty much similar to the QTS I'm used to. There are of course a few changes, different things etc, but in all our migration to QuTS Hero is quite smooth. The only drawback is moving the data from a QTS system to a QuTS Hero system, that is best done from the computer level (copying data from 1x share on QTS to another share on QTS Hero system) to ensure data is transferred in full. (especially when you are also moving from AFP to SMB v3 haha).
    It is like Craig presented here; if possible, have a play-around with QuTS Hero on your system if supported (without data on it, in case you want to go back to QTS instead).
    Yes, a typical home user will be just fine with QTS and may not need the power of QuTS Hero. But once you have tasted QuTS Hero and value its power, I do believe it could be hard to go back to QTS. But the good thing is, you do have a choice (if your QNAP supports it). And I noticed that the various new(er) QNAP models do often support both so why not have a look into QuTS Hero if you can?

    A very useful and concise summary, and it confirms my choice of QuTS hero on one NAS and QTS on the others. Photo Station isn’t available on QuTS hero but QuMagie is a good substitute. Personally, the data security and RAID rebuild times make QuTS hero more attractive if your box can run it.
    Thank you.

    Please, just 4 YES/NO questions. I'm going to go for a TS-873A with HDDs-only (mainly for archiving RAW videos) set in RAID-6. I would go for ZFS for its auto-repear feature. I would use the NAS as a normal DAS: I'm the only user and the NAS will be connected to a single PC directly via ethernet-cable (to avoid, when possible, internet connection). Here my questions: 1. Having HDDs only, do I really need the 10% Pool Over-Provisioning? 2. Do I strictly need a cache (let's say a NVMe) in order to use QuTS hero, or not? 3. Since the NAS will be connected directly to the PC via eth cable, how can I update the unit? (My PC is usually connected to internet via eth cable on the motherboard's secondary port, that's because I prefer avoiding wifi and I often work offline.) So, could I connect the NAS directly to internet/modem using its second port? Or does the NAS "receive" internet from the PC's secondary port? 4. In my case (i.e. using the NAS as a DAS archive just connected to a PC), the NAS can properly work even without internet connection, right? Many thanks in advance.

    Nice video. Thanks
    Which system do you recommend for these uses :
    - Personal photo storage
    - Document storage
    - Commercial films
    - Plex server (multi-user)
    - Jeedom VM (most commonly used)
    - Linux VM
    - VM Windows 10/11

      Your Windows VM is probably the most demanding item there, so depending on capacity I would start with something like the TS-473A (with a RAM upgrade, depending how much you want to allocate to VM's), something like the TS-h886 is a good option as well.

    For streaming large company videos multiple times daily, or general information like fliers or else what is the best option using around 80 tbs nas?

    • @QNAPUK
      @QNAPUK  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Streaming isn't too demanding so I would say you would be fine with QTS, the advanced features of QuTS hero wouldn't be used... by all means use QuTS hero, it'll work great also, would probably recommend something like a TS-873A for that (it can run both if you have enough RAM added).

    Great video. Interested in your thoughts.. would it be safe to say QTS is the best option purely for a media server?
    I'm looking at a TVS-h674T-i5-32G which could run QuTs fine, however it still looks like QTS may be the better option for mostly running PLEX or Jellyfin.

    • @QNAPUK
      @QNAPUK  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would probably agree, if you do not need volumes over 250TB in capacity then for a media server, QTS is probably the best option... simply uses less resources to run well. Obviously QuTS hero (ZFS) has a lot of other advantages... but for a media server, yes, QTS is great.
