I think the point made about how "there is love the noun and love the verb" is very true... in Norwegian, there are two different words for love depending on the action vs the feeling and I think that is a better way of doing it.

The Vampire Diaries is my guilty pleasure show, and you have no idea how sadly accurate that line is. Also yeah, the CW is like on a mission to promote toxic relationships. (PS I would LOVE for you to react to the psychology of Sarah from Chuck on Cinema Therapy)
The entire premise is that there are vampires. Since vampire do not really exist, none of it can be compared to real life.

I’m definitely not a professional, but this is my take: a boundary is “I can’t handle this” and an ultimatum is “if you do this” one is about your limits and the other is about controlling someone’s actions. Again, not a professional or taught in anything about this, and this is just based on my own personal experiences
@@ravengray3095 Yes but with the "bad things" the boundary continues like "i can't handle this, if this continues I have to end it here". And that ALWAYS makes it come off as an ultimatum / controlling. Or am I just too used to gaslighting??
A boundary usually is not a wall- it is a door. For example, you could have the boundary that you don't hang out with friends on week nights. Boundaries usually aren't relationship ending in themselves but if the boundary is crossed then you have communicated the consequence. To me a boundary is more about yourself than them as someone else said. It is like if someone hurt your feelings you are supposed to say "I" statements instead of "you" statements. Focusing on how you felt rather than accusing them. If someone disrespects your boundaries is that really someone you want in your life?
For Tyler & Caroline she is saying "if you take one more step we are done- no more excuses no more surprises- "honestly it kinda feels like the powers are reversed- she is putting the ball in his court when it really should be in hers. She is making him decide rather than deciding for herself. She should have just ended it herself knowing she deserves better. Neither was wanting to definitively end it which is why she gave the ultimatum and he just walked away thus giving his answer but neither one ended it themselves. I think it showed that both couldn't muster the strength to say the words and let the other go. They each made their choice. Honestly one of the worst/saddest ways to break up. They couldn't even face each other or the truth. They can both say they gave up and ended it. Her with the ultimatum and him walking away. A boundary is having the ball in your court and owning up to it- saying this is my door while an ultimatum puts everything in their court with you still having the power. It is always a loose loose situation if you get to that point. Either resentment or regret.
I think boundaries are a meeting of feelings. When each person in the relationship states how they feel about certain things and let each other know their beliefs and values. If those values conflict then that's where you have an issue and should work together to come to a compromise, or break up if compromise isn't possible.
An ultimatum doesn't take into account the other side. It's just a flat "This is how I feel and it WILL go my way." There's no space for negotiating or compromising, it's just "this or nothing".
Perhaps a good analogy is that boundaries are like countries having borders. They're not necessarily at war with each other but there's a clear line where the ideals (laws) of one stop and the ideals of the other begin. If their ideals align enough (think EU) then they can have open borders and that facilitates a 'healthy relationship' between the countries. More in terms of trade and transport when talking countries, but it translates to giving and receiving the love/support etc in a relationship.
Ultimatums are more like threats. It's like a country demanding that it's neighboring country surrender and live by the same laws, otherwise they're going to nuke it. They don't mutually meet at the borders and agree to get along, one country tries to encompass the other within it's border. Essentially making it a controlling, manipulative strategy, as Johno pointed out.

7:57 - I totally agree. My husband and I celebrate our 22nd anniversary this weekend. There have definitely been times that were hard and needed a lot of effort, but the vast majority of the time has been "it just works". He knows what I need, I know what he needs, and we manage to give each other those things, and barely even realise we do so. I guess that's how we've been together as long as we have.

Vampire Diaries pretty much thrives on toxic relationships. And I'm counting the time they introduced Elena's manipulative vampire doppelganger that sired Damon and Stephan years back but had been though dead. Both of the brothers were head over heels for her too. Yeah, it's the CW.

Lolol. Jono’s comments on the Elena/Stefan breakup. Little did he know that Stefan is the Ripper of Monterey and literally has ripped so many people apart. More than Damon has anyway. Damon’s killing looks tame in comparison to Stefan switching off his humanity switch. Stefan is the sweetest person when he lets himself feel, but he also goes off the deep end quick.
Plus, there's also how Damon could feed without ripping heads off. Although, I always liked it when Stefan was switched off because Paul Wesley played it to perfection in the same way that Silas to perfection.
They are both killers
You should definitely react to more Vampire Diaries character interactions! There's a lot to unpack with a lot of their storylines and the way they behave emotionally. A really dynamic character is Klaus Mikaelson!
“Switch at Birth” is so good. The scenes done in sign language are common in the show. I really love the follow up episode to the breakup. It shows Bay (the female) dealing with the aftermath and her feelings and it’s such a real portrayal of that process. I love it.
That response to seeing Chuck and Sarah on screen though?? Loved it. And honestly, same. What a great show to look at!
I think the one in Veronica Mars was what I'd call a healthy breakup. No screaming, no interrupting each other, no drama; just rational adults business. If I were ever to go through a breakup, I'd like someone who'd rationalise things with me the way that guy did.

Bly Manor has a really good tear-jerker of a breakup. It's not a conversation scene but visuals and voice-over. But because it's a breakup out of love, and it's really well done, IMHO.
All of the Chuck and Sarah troubles hurt. I’m going through the show with my SO and he wants them together so bad and keeps getting mad when things happen and then they break up. He’s going to be really angry at the end.
Oh man, the ending broke me for a few days. It was beautiful, but it wasn't the clean and simple happy ending I needed, lol.

Although the ending wasn't perfect for Chuck and Sarah (what were the writers thinking?), I just know deep down that her memories will come back after he tells her their story and she asks him to kiss her. It's Chuck after all. How could they not get their happy ending?! And even if it's not instant, she WILL fall in love again and get her memories back. 1. Chuck is an adorable man. 2. The show was just too optimistic for it to be meant to be sad. River and roads ....

You have a good point about couples who start ripping each other's clothes off right after screaming at each other. Doesn't work that way in real life. But I've known a few people who think it does. Not to that extreme, but people who want to come up and hug me when we're still in the process of the argument..... nope. Just nope.

One of my favorite breakup scenes is the Ross and Rachel one from Friends, of all things. I’m not a huge fan of that show, but I think that episode captures the raw emotions of breaking up with someone you still love very well.
Veronica Mars!! Yay!! That relationship could have its own whole episode it's so complex. Especially in season four when they're adults and he's trying to change the toxic dynamic but for some reason she won't let him

I think Caroline was just tired of playing second fiddle to his quest for revenge. (“I made him choose. Me or his stupid revenge fantasy. He chose wrong.”) Maybe it’s an ultimatum or maybe it’s a boundary. It’s hard to tell IMO.

9:20 scene was sad, I had the same experience as the girl and was totally confused by that "shift" and him not even saying it but blaming it on other things. Which meant I myself had to be the one to figure it out. Letting someone down gently is not preferred in my book, that's cowardly. Thanks Jono for sticking up for her.
You like chuck and have watched both buffy and angel. You might be the only therapist worth listening to.
Sometimes I get so annoyed at break ups on shows, but then I always try to think about if its bad writing, bad acting, or maybe they're teenagers. Sometimes I forget what it was like at that age.
The Vampire Diaries is something special and unapologetically CW. They get points for Damon saying it's a toxic relationship, how many shows do that?
IIRC the cast were instructed to not indulge any shipping inquiries, whether it was online (social media) or interviews.
Breakups just suck, but there's also an instance of it where you can experience the depth of love if love is the reason you break up. When it's the very core of it! When your regard for both of you runs so deep, that you wouldn't stand for leaving the both of you in a place of misery to the point where the only way out is through building up enough contempt and turning ugly in your own and each other's (and everyone's) eyes.
It's empowering to have been able to seperates in love. There's honor in a realistic retreat and acceptance of defeat after having tried your best as fighting for common ground.
When that is not how we separate, then we've either never had love and regard or we are way way way to late in confirming our reality. And that happens. It's not like we're born with these skills. They're discovered, studied and practiced, refined and further developed and practiced some more. And sometimes disintegrated and fully replaced, closing and opening the cyclical spiral motion of life.
Thank you foe your honesty and for telling what is not talked about often enough. The deference between our feelings and thoughts versus our actions, choices, moral integrity. There are instances that simply exist and are to be seen and accepted. And other instances that are choice. Not "regardless" but "in consideration of" what's inside. And really, if you can feel happy and sad at the same time, why shouldn't you be able to form actions of integrity at all times. It's all you, so the only question is which "you" do you place in the driver's seat.

This makes me realize I never got to have a face to face breakup. All of them were by text. The last one was just pure ghosting out of the blue
I have to wonder what it says about me, or the men I picked to love. Been knowing them for months if not years yet I never even got a call when I was told it was over. No convo. No reason. Nothing.
I remember when my first love/long-term boyfriend broke up with me. I was 24...it was 17 years ago and I remember the heartbreak felt in that moment and in months/years afterwards. I had just witnessed my best friend get mercilessly dumped with an admission of cheating and being in love with another girl. I watched her beg for him not to leave her even after he told her all of that. I told myself right then that I would never beg ANYONE to stay with me if they expressed a wish to separate/breakup. I literally had NO fight in me even though inside I was devastated...so it was probably the saddest, most anger free breakup ever. We both cried. It was very hard for both of us. But it's what was best. We remain friends to this day ♥️ I eventually married and had 2 beautiful children and he found the perfect woman for him. What's beautiful is that we are glad to see the other so happy in life. Honestly though, he's one of my only exes that I have that with. Admittedly, n my opinion, he is my most important ex. What we had was very very real and an important stepping stone in learning how to unselfishly be in a committed relationship
yeah my first break up from my first love and long term boyfriend was excruciating and took over a year to get over. We are not friends. Nothing like the first.

Mom of 5 here. I have a very healthy relationship with my hubby, but the line "The sex is so good I just put up with it" is one of the biggest myths and worst statements ever uttered in existence. There is no such thing as "The sex is so good I just put up with it." No, the sex is not "that good", it's just something people tell themselves to justify why they stay. If you're staying in a relationship for the sex, then you are in it for the wrong reason to begin with. That's why we have so many divorces, sex is supposed to be this cure all for everything. I love John's statement in another video that if you start out a relationship with sex, it gives you a false sense of love, and that is sooo true! Sex greatly enhances an already good relationship, but you can't base a healthy relationship off if it.

Here's the context if the first Vampire Diaries clip. Damon will usually go do something horrible( like kill one if her friends and/or brother) every time Elena breaks up with him. He'll do it to get her attention and she takes him back every time. There summed all up
Vampire Diaries is the delicious drama you never knew you needed.
If you ever do one of these again, I recommend watching Finn and Rachel's break up in "The Break-Up" an episode of Glee. Lea Michele's acting is phenomenal, it's so heartbreaking.

If you watched the whole secret life scene , it’s actually super emo bc she really changed his whole view on love, forgiveness and all that. He was so broken, abused, distrustful of others. They had a kid, didn’t fall in love til years later, wanted to get married but learned to love each other and not be in love. They never trusted the other, but knew at the end of the series they could with everything. Amy left knowing John was in good hands bc Ricky, from the instant John was born, did everything for his son. And at least we get the satisfaction of knowing the end up together as adults LOL.
I can absolutely relate to what you said: Tell the truth, no matter how hard it hurts. Because i was broken up with without an explanation whatsoever and it took me around a year or so to stop asking myself, why and if I did something wrong and was able to just accept it and that I will never get an explanation.
Gladly in this time a had good support and put much time into nurturing and being good to myself.
If I did not had that time for me, I don't know if I would be over it now.
It means respect to be honest with the one you are breaking up and telling whatever is the truth. So the other person can close with it sooner and better.
You can ALWAYS heal from such a thing without the partner being honest whatsoever - it just may take a bit longer. Just wanted to add this. Because some think for very long that they only can heal if the other person helps them in any way. That is not true. You can always heal on yourself. It just may take some more time (but can be different of course too).

You’re not missing anything by not watching Vampire Diaries, in my opinion. You said what I have always felt about Damon and Elena. I loved the throat ripping comment though.

All in all, great episode! I really enjoyed it.
The Buffy/Angel breakup is SO bad! She did chose to leave him many épisodes before that, knowing it couldn’t work. They come back together because HE is in a bad place and can’t deal with it without her (there’s a lot to say about that…). And this scene completly negates the fact that she’s the mature one on this relationship at this point and one of the main point of the show: life is about choices. Buffy always make choices. Making her say « I didn’t know I had a choice » and him choose for her was a very lame and out of character way to set Angel’s spinoff in motion.
True. Also, the ep in Angel where they get together and then her memory is erased killed me.
Buffy/Angel was so gross. He was 240 years old and spying on her when she was 14, then got with her when she was 16. He was an ADULT to the nth degree, he would not have the mentality of a 22 year old (which they tried to portray him as at first). Serious pedo there. Just thinking about it makes me vomit a little into my mouth.

The thing about being upfront instead of sparing feelings is so true. My ex said we were incompatible, that we would just get on eachother's nerves and she didn't want the "amazing friendship" to be ruined. I accepted that she had the right to end it, but asked what I was doing to risk the friendship and she had the audacity to say it wouldn't be fair on me to tell me. In contrast, my now GF and soon to be fiancée is always upfront with me when she doesn't like something, as well as with what she likes, and I can adapt accordingly (sometimes easy, sometimes hard, but I work at it). And she reciprocates that as well. It's so different and almost astonishingly easy to communicate with her.
Wildfire was such a good show!! It started as a tv movie and then the show came from it. The first episode for the show never makes sense for a rewatch, because it just starts in the middle of the action/storyline, and you miss the real start of it. Junior and Kris ended up together, though. They’re second relationship is a lot healthier than the first one. The whole “older and wiser” thing.
First, I love this series and your Cinema Therapy. I watch every video, and a few on repeat. Second, Vampire Diaries is okay, but if you want good "Guilty Pleasure" tv try The Originals. It is a spin off where the characters behave more in the mid-20's maturity range rather then High School age.
Seeing all these shows from the 90s, I would love to see what you think about love stories like Phoebe and Cole from Charmed. As a child, I hated them yet I cried at the end. Now I see "the angst" the writers tried to put in all of this, but I can't help but believe it was a tragically toxic relationship. Yknow, kinda like Buffy and Angel tbh.
(and hahaha all this Vampire Diaries Angst in this video, I cannot, and that's really not the worst of it...)
Oh dude. If you haven’t yet, can you please do “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”? I love that movie, and it’s such a weird situation, two spies trying to kill each other but they’re married and going to marriage counseling. I mean… seriously you’d have a great video there if you did that movie.
