    All these years I thought that it was only Danny Elfman who made the music and not Christopher Young until Spider-Man 3. Shocked.

      I agree. It took me a good number of years to realise it wasn't all Elfman. Christopher did an amazing job as he had to adapt from Elfman's style. 1:22-1:35 was such an amazing part of the score for me. Always sends me chills of delight.

    Y'know, I think Christopher Young's version is the better choice, and I'm glad they used it. It keeps the tension throughout and only gives heroic moments sparingly, only once danger has actually passed. Elfman, for whatever reason, seemed to prefer constant heroic music throughout, which makes it almost feel like a comic book because...a moment of high tension needs to be respected as tension; we can celebrate Peter's heroism later, but right now, the focus is on saving lives. It's distracting to be reminded every single second that Peter's heroic and wonderful.

    Elfman's version is kind of slow and too heroic, Young's version keeps the tension on until releases the heroic theme with so much relief, also the break when Spiderman swings around the street to catch the train is awesome, that is a great way to drive the scene and I understand why Raimi choose to change the score

    Personally, some parts I liked of Elfman's, but in my opinion, Young's fit way more better. More tension was built and fits great! A big part of Elfman's I don't like it how it sounds almost copied and pasted from the Revenge scene from Spider-Man 1. I'm glad with the final decision though.

    Simply put: Christopher Young's music builds tension and doesn't let up until the end. Danny Elfman's music kept feeling heroic in places where it's almost inappropriate. I mean yes in the movie this is in a sense celebrating Spider-Man's big come back, but Danny's music should have kept the tension going. It's great, but Young fits the vibe of the scene better.

    While Danny Elfman did a great job, Christopher Young’s version is much better. Elfman’s version seemed slightly out of place to me when I compared it with Christopher Young’s one. In Elfman’s version, the part where Peter comes back to the train after Doc Ock threw him away made us feel that Peter’s gonna win & the part where Peter stops the train made us feel that he’s gonna stop it but in Young’s version, It didn't exactly make us think that will Peter win & be able to stop the train. It gives out much more tension & makes us wonder will he stop it. Young’s version is much better & gives out a much more intense feel.

    I'll be honest: As much as I love Danny Elfman's score, I can completely understand why they didn't go with it, and I think that Young's score fits the scene better. Now, hear me out:
    Although Elfman's is great, I think what makes this scene so great are the breaks in the music and some of the quieter moments... in the finished film, it builds more tension compared to always having that loud, heroic music playing.
    As a standalone track, Elfman's is definitely the better one, but in the context of the film, I think that Young's is better.
    Still wish that Elfman came back for 3, though...

    • @OptiZonion
      @OptiZonion 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +JOE MOVIEBUFF I agree with you for the very beginning of the fight : Elfman's score needed some rework but who knows if he ever got feedback about it, Raimi not being present during most of the recording if I recall correctly.
      However, after that, I still think that Elfman's proposition is far richer and fits the images with more strength. Young's music is just repetitive motives that we heard a zillion times before (not that he had time to write something much better of course).

      Omar Rivas Bustinza its because it is but altered a bit.

    • @Ashfer2
      @Ashfer2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The problem with a lot of these things is that the composers don't necessarily get to write to a complete scene. Especially if there is a lot of green screen or something. They also don't know what the action sounds themselves will be like, so during a lot of action scenes the music gets lost anyway because of all the crazy explosions and whatnot. While they'd love to be able to write to a finished product and work around it that usually isn't the case especially with cgi movies and how things can be all changed up to the last minute. At the end of the day it's the directors usually making the decision anyway to decide what to put where. They can switch different pieces and put them in places they weren't intended by the composer to be if they thought it worked better somewhere else. My point is I was surprised to learn this information and never really had thought about it before how all these factors come into play. It's a wonder any movies get completed lol

    • @Ashfer2
      @Ashfer2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Omar Rivas Bustinza That's because Elfman generally makes certain themes for certain characters. So when on a sequel he uses the same base theme but does alterations of it because that's how the character is defined and it follows them through the movie subtly depending on what aspect of that character they're trying to show. It basically builds on the theme like how you're building on the character for the sequel.

  • @gckbowers411
    @gckbowers411 7 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    I think the Elfman version is too soft and light hearted. It launches into victory music as soon as Spider-Man starts launching the webs, pretty much saying "the conflict is over", instead of ramping up the tension until the very end like Young's does (making you unsure whether or not the train really will stop). Plus, the use of the Spider-Man theme was almost too obvious. Every time Spider-Man did anything, the first few notes of the Spider-Man theme would play before being abruptly cut off.

    I think the constant tonal shifts between dark and light in the Elfman score kinda kill the tension. Also the spiderman theme references are too constant. I really like the repetition rhythm and intensity of Young's score, the way it slowly builds in intensity and also the new ways he adapts the themes. Elfman's theme references all sound too similar to one another, to me they could be from either film because the instrumentation has no variety.

    I feel bad for Elfman, as there was undoubtedly a lot of pain being told something you threw your heart into doesn't work. But I think they made the right choice going with Young's score for this scene. Elfman's score is too heroic and doesn't really underscore the danger. I get that he was trying to sell it as Spider-Man's big comeback, but it's too on the nose. By ratcheting up the tension and focusing on the immediate stakes, Young ultimately makes Spider-Man's return all the more heroic. I love Elfman's other work on the film though. That heavy instrumentation for the Doc Ock theme is just perfect.

    Both are great pieces of music in their own right, but I can see why Christopher Young rescored this scene and Danny Elfmans cue was rejected. Dannys score was a copy and paste of Peter chasing down Spike after Spike killed Uncle Ben from the first film and it sounded a bit too heroic and wasn't really that suspenseful. This scene needed the intensity and suspense to drive it and Christopher had it. At the time when this movie came out, I thought it was all scored by Danny. And those snare drums chugging like a train in Christopher Youngs score is a nice touch!

I've been reading all the comments and I get why Raimi wanted horror and suspense, but to me what was so good about the first movie was the visual horror balanced by Elfman's angelic music. I think I prefer Elfman's here because while Young's score "fits" the mood (in other words it tells you how to feel which is a no-no), Elfman's feels like it's part of the story I've been watching since the first Spider-Man, it just feels so right and returns me to the feeling Spider-Man 2002 gave that this movie just didn't. All these years later and it makes more sense now.
    Don't get me started on Spider-Man 3 either. Like Young's score in this scene, it feels like hacked up pieces of Elfman's score mixed in with new pieces of music that just don't fit, AT ALL. The symbiote theme is a cool theme in another movie that isn't Spider-Man, and it just feels mediocre in comparison. Elfman not doing SM3 was the first thing I noticed and hated about it, then the worse visual effects because Dykstra didn't return, and the bloated, messy plot because Arad interfered. It was a disappointment but whenever I look back I'm so grateful for Spider-Man 1 and at least how much of an adventure Spider-Man 2 is, even if it wasn't the true sequel (because of the music amongst other things) my spirit desired.

      I think I understand your point, but we all know that Christopher Young did a much better job in this scene, which is a big part of why it's so memorable.

      @@SuperGogetaGamer I appreciate you reading my comment. I'm not arguing against it being memorable - however "better" is obviously subjective. I listed my reasons above and don't want to waste your time repeating them. I take it that you and many people, including Raimi, think it's better because it's tense and seems to fit this scene more. I think it kicks ass for sure and there are some parts I would want to keep, but it's messy and choppy (probably because Young was brought into the movie late). It leaves you disconnected after the scene ends, there's no love or organic connection to the rest of the movie's musical motif.
      When I hear Elfman's version it makes me realize that we missed out on a different story because Raimi and Elfman couldn't agree on a vision. At least I'll always have the first movie, still my favorite even though nothing beats this train scene.

    I'm glad someone posted a video that I actually care about! Yeah I'm gonna be honest that while Elfman's score fits better in the scene, I much rather prefer the Chrostopher Young arrangement from the theatrical release. That's part of the movie, and it's a famn shame those cues weren't inserted i to the Official score.

    • @pauldael
      @pauldael  8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The actual film's music was composed by Christopher Young. Danny Elfman did another version of the scene, but was rejected.

    • @mitrooper
      @mitrooper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The Spidey 2 music was composed by Danny Elfman, the original composer of the first Spider-Man movie, but during the making of the sequel Sam Raimi, the director, rejected most of Elfman's score for some reason...Christoper Young was called in to compose new music for all the parts Raimi wanted changed.
      So most music was composed by Danny Elfman with additional music by Christopher Young, Making Elfman the main composer of Spidey 2.
      For Spidey 3, Elfman didn't come back, can you blame him? So Christopher Young composed the Spidey 3 score.
      I have heard rumors that Elfman did give Young some advice and such for the music, but I'm not sure about that.

    Christopher Young's version is okay but sounds generic and forgettable, except for this part 1:23 which basically just tries to copy Elfman's version which is more powerfull and heroic 6:20.

    What a terrible edit of the Elfman soundtrack. The track is supposed to begin as soon as they land on the train. It’s the reason why it sounds and looks so out of sync. What a piss poor showcase of an amazing piece of music that definitely fits the scene.

      connextro Nope, sorry but if you play the music as soon as they land on the train it flows so much better, I’ve done it and those couple of seconds really do make a difference. Funny you decided to mark those specific parts but ignore the rest of the music that doesn’t flow. You get a C+ for the effort though.
