The trash and the triumphs, the cults and the merely cultish, the daring and the dreck, the blockbusters and the bombs, the art and the artifice - it's all here in this beautiful collection which represents what is, for many with living memories of the period, an iconic and transitional year between two decades which couldn't be more diametrically opposed in aesthetics, sensibility and politics. Al Pacino zipped in fetish leather. Richard Gere swathed in pastel Giorgio Armani (and analogue Giorgio Moroder). Neil Diamond in Lurex, Angie in the shower, Redford in aviators and Eastwood in Levis. Irene Cara eased into Danksin. Sissy Spacek in Holly Hobbie. Blood, guts, goofballs, greatness and proto-yuppies. Will there ever be another year like this?

I like how I can identify most of these movies within a few seconds. Great collection.

WOW!! 1980 was a great year for movies!! I have seen ALL of these and i even own about 90% of them. I'm glad you decided to do them in alphabetical order, although I was wondering why you didn't include 'Terror Train', with Jamie Lee Curtis. Growing up at the drive-in, and being a film buff and collector i knew what most of these were even before they showed the movie title. These were the good old days when trailers showed you just enough highlights to get you hooked WITHOUT giving away the entire movie. The editors that make trailers today need to go back and watch trailers like this so they can learn how to do a trailer properly. Job well done!! i enjoyed this!!

_American Gigolo_ is one of the most underrated modern film nior movies of all time. Richard Gere's character is one of the most unlikable protagonists of all time, but you end up realizing how utterly wrong the apathy and Schadenfreude being shown to him by everyone but Lauren Hutton's character is.. and makes both of them the most moral and righteous people in the entire story. Also, BOTH Filo Beddo films ( _Every Which Way But Lose_ and 1980's _Any Which Way You Can_ ) were great underrated action comedies.. and true proof of Clint Eastwood's unequaled genius!
Also.. today. there is no way that _Ordinary People_ , either the novel nor the film, ever would have seen the light of day. A movie depicting a woman as the cold parent lacking in utter self awareness.. the militant "woke" (especially the misandrists..) would have burned down the book stores and theaters before they would have let that happen.

Not to mention the glorious unreality
      of the psychiatrist in
      "Ordinary People".
      Real psychiatrists (unfortunately)
      are the total opposite
      of this character.
In fact, it was pretty much
      like that even back then.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! I was unaware of the reasons some people were amazed when they saw that they don't want them in their right mind. The chickens will one day take over the world and rain superior. Also the water coming from the ceiling into the office is not the same as the language of our counselors. We have received the forms for the people who owned the property in the beginning of this year and they will NEVER be able to defeat the tongabuckee tribe from the planet Neptune. The spacedogs will not Approve of this upcoming season but will require the pet hippies.

CM: I'm not sure if your penultimate choice of Heaven's Gate followed by the 'pun' title of "Somewhere in Time' was deliberate but the placement works very well.
'Used Cars' is cited below. Here are some other films (the good, the bad and the...well, you know) from this marvellous year:
'Atlantic City, 'Melvin and Howard', 'The Stuntman,' 'Can't Stop the Music,' 'Foxes,' 'Times Square,' 'Little Darlings,' 'The Changeling', 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane', 'Roadie', 'Kagemusha', 'The Last Metro', 'Raise the Titanic', 'The Apple,' 'Battle Beyond the Stars,' 'Galaxina,' among several others...such a time!
Thanks for this great and fascinating compilation.

@Sean Wilkinson Another aspect of the parody is that Maureen McGovern, who famously sang songs for '70s disaster movies, gladly parodied herself (& them) in this movie.
