Nice SD70Ms are my favorite Freight Locomotive on the UP . When I Rode the 2017 Home plate Express to Downtown Omaha Our helper was a Pair of SD70Ms While the Helper Behind UP#844 Was a Gevo T4
SD70M's are powerful and reliable as can be until you get one or a duo trying to do switching or moving a consist on their own.Due to the fact that their traction motors are DC,they don't have as much traction effort as more modern or rebuilt locomotives that have AC traction motors.You get any of these trying to move a heavy or long manifest without something else,they will struggle until they get enough motion.
The fact that these are still running should be proof that these are still capable machines today. It's also noteworthy that units 4884 and 4014 (now 4479) were responsible for pulling Big Boy to Cheyenne.
Just wanted to give you a heads up, there’s a bridge north of Council Bluffs that sank a few inches into the ground. As a result, traffic that normally goes north out of Council Bluffs to Missouri Valley now has to go west through Omaha to Fremont right now, so you’ll probably see an increase in traffic on the Omaha Sub. It’ll go back to normal when it’s fixed
