Germany has many parties on paper, but in practice the overlap and the way coalition negotiations go, there really is just one uni-party and the AfD in opposition, so in practice you really only have 2 choices. Though the vast majority of the German people absolutely eat up that narrative and truly believe that if they now vote for one of the other establishment parties things will change. There's also a push to redefine the role of the government to no longer be a government for Germany and its people, but for "everyone who lives in Germany", which may sounds nice on paper, but is only done to further disenfranchise the native population and giving priority to everyone else. German's government is so hostile towards its own citizens they basically invented an entire new word for it, which is "Inlandsfeindlich" (being hostile towards your own people) which is like the flipside of "Auslandsfeindlich" (being hostile towards other people, basically xenophobia). I don't think there's any other country in the world where the government hold their own country in as much contempt as in Germany, I don't think such a thing ever happened in all of history. You have politicians openly insult the native Germans or even deny their existence. One of the most (in)famous Green Politicians is on record saying that the thought of loving your own country is vomit-inducing and that he never cared for Germany... and also that you cannot betray the German people because there are no German people. Recently someone got arrested for calling that politician an idiot, because the ruling caste is just nobility I guess. Also if you suggest that there is something that makes you German beyond having a German passport you're already a Nazi. If you fly to Australia and travel into the bush to meet with natives, like Aborigines, and you hand them a German passport, they become indistinguishable from someone who's family has lived in Germany for generations. The entire German identity and culture is reduced to a word on a passport. When it comes to banning the AfD the only consideration usually is whether it is strategically viable, like whether a ban wouldn't give them more support or would legitimize them if the courts can't find enough hard evidence to justify a ban. The whole morality of banning a democratic party to save Democracy is never even discussed. Taking away the representation of 20-30% of the population isn't even a talking point for most of them. Also btw. just this month Germany has basically abolished Gender because thanks to a new law everyone can now legally change their gender once a year, no questions asked, and can sue people for thousands of Euros for not respecting that or calling them out for it. So from now on men can join any women's spaces or fill in for quotas and such. Might be even worth doing because women get so many benefits in Germany. Also if two married people with children swap their gender they could apply for special grants to support LGBT families or something. This law also essentially outlaws reality, since acknowledging or saying out loud what your lying eyes can see will get you fine to a crippling degree. Though the worst thing is that 80% of Germans are enthusiastically onboard with it. You should've experienced what the pandemic was like in Germany, people were ecstatic to have a group of people to scapegoat and oppress while they snuggled up to the government. I could rant on forever.

Re: Russia. There are a few political parties banned in Russia, of the tiny extremist fringe kind. The largest of those was National Bolshevik (not to be confused with either nazis or bolsheviks, but you get the mindset of its leaders) party with about 50k members. As far as I'm aware, there are more banned parties currently in Germany than in Russia. And no, none of the banned parties have anywhere near 1% representation, nevermind 20%.

Germany has many parties on paper, but in practice the overlap and the way coalition negotiations go, there really is just one uni-party and the AfD in opposition, so in practice you really only have 2 choices. Though the vast majority of the German people absolutely eat up that narrative and truly believe that if they now vote for one of the other establishment parties things will change.
There's also a push to redefine the role of the government to no longer be a government for Germany and its people, but for "everyone who lives in Germany", which may sounds nice on paper, but is only done to further disenfranchise the native population and giving priority to everyone else.
German's government is so hostile towards its own citizens they basically invented an entire new word for it, which is "Inlandsfeindlich" (being hostile towards your own people) which is like the flipside of "Auslandsfeindlich" (being hostile towards other people, basically xenophobia). I don't think there's any other country in the world where the government hold their own country in as much contempt as in Germany, I don't think such a thing ever happened in all of history.
You have politicians openly insult the native Germans or even deny their existence. One of the most (in)famous Green Politicians is on record saying that the thought of loving your own country is vomit-inducing and that he never cared for Germany... and also that you cannot betray the German people because there are no German people. Recently someone got arrested for calling that politician an idiot, because the ruling caste is just nobility I guess.
Also if you suggest that there is something that makes you German beyond having a German passport you're already a Nazi. If you fly to Australia and travel into the bush to meet with natives, like Aborigines, and you hand them a German passport, they become indistinguishable from someone who's family has lived in Germany for generations. The entire German identity and culture is reduced to a word on a passport.
When it comes to banning the AfD the only consideration usually is whether it is strategically viable, like whether a ban wouldn't give them more support or would legitimize them if the courts can't find enough hard evidence to justify a ban. The whole morality of banning a democratic party to save Democracy is never even discussed. Taking away the representation of 20-30% of the population isn't even a talking point for most of them.
Also btw. just this month Germany has basically abolished Gender because thanks to a new law everyone can now legally change their gender once a year, no questions asked, and can sue people for thousands of Euros for not respecting that or calling them out for it. So from now on men can join any women's spaces or fill in for quotas and such.
Might be even worth doing because women get so many benefits in Germany. Also if two married people with children swap their gender they could apply for special grants to support LGBT families or something. This law also essentially outlaws reality, since acknowledging or saying out loud what your lying eyes can see will get you fine to a crippling degree.
Though the worst thing is that 80% of Germans are enthusiastically onboard with it. You should've experienced what the pandemic was like in Germany, people were ecstatic to have a group of people to scapegoat and oppress while they snuggled up to the government.

It's the same way everywhere: Americans think the multiparty model is somewhat better, but the nature of power will always be divided just in two: the situation and the opposition. The multiparty system just makes the illusion of representation more believable, at least until the people start to vote for a party not allowed into the circus.

We had pretty much the same situation with our conservative anti immigration party here in Sweden, supposedly they were the ”fringe-extremists” even though they represent around 20% of the population, and obviously ”couldn’t be worked with” by any other party, even though their politicians were always civil and factual in any debates, instead of screaming slurs and slander at their opposition as fast as they opened their mouth, like the ”moral and virtuos non-extremist” parties always did.
Is there just no support to pull something like the American people did? I got tired of politicians and media telling me I'm this or that and bad just because I didn't agree with the status quo. So I voted and encouraged my friends and family to as well. Boom, Trump wins!

Re: Russia.
There are a few political parties banned in Russia, of the tiny extremist fringe kind. The largest of those was National Bolshevik (not to be confused with either nazis or bolsheviks, but you get the mindset of its leaders) party with about 50k members.
As far as I'm aware, there are more banned parties currently in Germany than in Russia.
And no, none of the banned parties have anywhere near 1% representation, nevermind 20%.

We have the same political system here in Sweden, and the biggest party here was "Sweden Democrats" which want to put our citizens first, and the rest of the political parties vowed to not deal with them, and some even said they will try to get them banned, so it's the same here, they are the swedish equivalent to the german afd and all i hear from the other political parties is "omg they are terrible and want to make life for you terrible!" yet from what the sweden democrats have said they want to do, it would be a GREAT improvement if they ACTUALLY got to implement what they say they want to do, yet they couldn't do it last time because the other political parties opposed them on EVERYTHING, and we the citizens are just baffled at how the other political parties are behaving, never did i think they would be behaving this way and pushing censoring a party they disagree with even tho it's the most popular one....

Having followed European politics for decades, banning non-EU parties seems to be the norm.
Note the anti immigration populist new left wing party that is less than a year old, the BSW is already getting 7% and the Bavarian CSU, that is in permanent coalition with the CDU, is MUCH more conservative than the CDU, they have friendly relations with Orban for example, if you put those three together its the largest party.
