The sequel to this game was just as great…from an Aussie perspective, retaining the Cup was such a massive task! This was one of the greatest Aussie sides - World Campions and the current benchmark. The SA fans make out like their rivalry with The ABs is the greatest, but the AB rivalry with Australia is a lot older and more local. In terms of competitiveness of history SA and AUS are pretty equal (and closest to each other for W-L) and the ABs are in a league of their own…Worldwide they are unrivalled!

During the late 90s and early 2000s, Southern Hemisphere rugby was at the peak of its powers. Between '97 and late '98, South Africa won 17 consecutive Test (international) matches. We beat Australian three times on the bounce and New Zealand twice. That same Australian group went on to win the '99 World Cup, after knocking South Africa out in a gripping semi-final (after regulation time). That era just had legends everywhere.

So many All Blacks legends. Jonah Lomu, Christian Cullen, Tana Umaga, Carlos Spencer and more. Any player can take the penalty kick but most teams its the fly half (10). NZ and Aussie have a rivalry as they have their own trophy and play each other all the time but NZ always wins.

    1) Another legend in this match was Christian Cullen. He scored 4 tries in his debut match for the All Blacks against Scotland.
    2) There is usually one person on each team that takes the penalties and conversions. Often this will be the half-back, number 10.
    3) Yes, there is a big rivalry between Australia and New Zealand in rugby. Australians are a bit like our big brother across the ditch. Rugby isn't their biggest sport-that would be Aussie Rules, which is quite different, or Rugby League.
    4) The other sport that you might like to react to is cricket, which is somewhat similar to your baseball. There is a huge amount to know about cricket with lots of subtleties that will take a while to learn. Very, very big in India.

That first play, watch the shoulders of the guy in gold. The way they shift as you lost sight of the ball. Looks like he tried to pass it.
A dedicated kicker usually takes care of all awarded kicks. He/she is the one that also does most of the tactical kicking also but you want most of your backs to have their own "tricks".
I was reffing a high school match in Denver. I awarded a penalty and was surprised when this young lad said the wanted to kick at goal. I asked if he realized which 10 we were standing on as we were 60M out with an angle. He confirmed that he knew where we were. The kick cleared the bar by a good 15-20 feet.
After I moved to NC I went to Charlotte to see them play the Denver Barbarians. Guess who was kicking for them. Yes, that same lad. I talked to him afterwards and he told me that he was in the USA Eagle pool.
A couple years later the Eagles were set to play Racine (a French pro club) in my home town (Charleston) hoping to see him play again.
Very early it became obvious that for some unknown reason the USA did not bother putting a post kicker on their roster when they missed a penalty from the center of the 22. Racine noticed this also. As the game developed the French were able to withstand penalty after penalty with out worrying about repercussions on the scoreboard.
That is the day I lost all hope in USA Rugby.
When you have a kicker like that in your pool and you decide that you'll go without.....
That lad had an excellent game. Running, passing, tackling and kicking. I realize perhaps that perhaps he was a step slower than thee guy they played but you HAVE to have someone that can kick at post. If not the opposition will commit penalties freely.

There is a huge sporting rivalry between Australia and New Zealand. We are probably the closest of countries in the world today. Both Australia and New Zealand are very proud sporting nations so neither side is ever going to back down. South Africa is our biggest rivalry in rugby. Because historically the Spring Boks are the best. The All Blacks have had the timber on them in recent years but I can tell you that back in the day the Spring Boks were the benchmark to which all New Zealand looked to.

To clear up a couple of points. The NZ player didn't knock it on. At 3:29 you see the Aus defender gather the ball and try to pass it back to his team mate but his pass goes in the air. The NZ player Umaga intercepts it.
The size of the final score is not so unusual these days, but how it unfolded in the first half is very unusual for an elite international game. NZ went up 24-0 in a matter of a few minutes, but by half-time Australia had got back to 24-24 (they missed the conversion), then went ahead just after the break with a penalty at 6:55. From that point on it was nerve-racking stuff. I watched this live in a sports bar in Europe full of Oz and NZ fans and the place went crazy.
Traditionally the Boks are NZ's biggest rivals and have the best record against NZ, but the Aus/NZ rivalry really went up a few notches during this period when the Wallabies were strong and retained the Bledisloe Cup for five years. In recent times NZ have been very dominant, but a lot of NZ fans are glad to see Australia on the rise again. Or so it seems.

One of the reasons that this game was one of the greatest is because Australia had had an extended run of dominance over the All Blacks that stretched from 1998 to 2002 and included victory at the 99 World Cup. There were far more legends in the Australian team than there was in the All Blacks who were still going through a rebuilding phase. The whole Australian backline would come into consideration as their greatest ever players - Roff, Larkham, Gregan and Eales would likely be considered GOATS. For NZ, Jonah and Cullen are probably the only players that fit that mold.

Having a good kicker in Rugby is make or break for a team. The same kicker will take all the penalties and make most of the kicks for territory during open play. Sometimes there will be a dedicated kicker who is better at long range kicks, but 95% of conversions and penalities will be taken by the same guy. You should check out the U.S sevens team and their 'fastest man in rugby' Carlin Isles.

Great rivalries in both Rugby Union and Test Cricket and One day cricket are the big 4. Australia , England/Great Britain, New Zealand and South Africa. Even though other countries play Rugby, and Cricket against the 4, none have been world champions in both sports and dominated them. Some rivalries are Australia against England in the Ashes , Australia against NZ in Rugby Union and League , Cricket , Netball , or any sport played between the two. They have a dedicated kicker. Most of the time the nr 10, which is the half-back, but this is not always the case. There are teams that have other players kicking penalties for instance the one team you are watching here. Australia had a flanker called John Eales. He was a number 7 and used to be part of the scrum. He was also n very good penalty kicker for Australia. He played for Australia from 1991 - 2001. Then you also sometimes get the nr 11, which is the fly-half that will kick penalties. It all depends on who is the better penalty kicker in the team.

We are better at Union, they are better at League. In Rugby Union they play a 3 game series every year as part of the Rugby Championship for the Bledisloe Cup. It's been a while since the Aussies have had it now..close to 20 years, I think. Game highlights will increase your understanding of the game, so keep going with that.. BTW on the first try, the ball was actually passed backwards by the Australian player, you can see it better from behind the posts in one of the replays.

This is why players rugby into the middle of the try zone. This kick can be taken as far or as near to the try line as long as it's on this line. However, if you're too near it will get charged down and going further back for kicks from the side gives you a better angle.

Great game in its own right . Blake you allude to this high scoring game with more focus on offence !! The Springbok All Black match you watched from this year in the Championship is more reflective of current rugby . DEFENSE tends to be the current trend and of huge advantage and significance. South Africa are known for being brutal on DEFENSE . Hence I would say the latter match was more of a GREAT one for tradionalists. It had a good mix of defense and Offense !! Which is the ideal I would say. You want the tries to be ' earned " . PS a Penalty is taken from where infringement happens . Taken by the same kicker as a rule but not enforced . A penalty or drop goal is worth 3 points . A conversion is a kick taken after a try which is worth 2 !!

Australia is more or less New Zealand’s big brother, New Zealand being the younger brother. How ever Australia “Wallabies” have not beaten the New Zealand “All Blacks” at New Zealand’s spiritual home of Rugby, Eden Park, Auckland NZ since 1986… Hence rivalry, however the South African’s “Springboxs” vs “All Blacks” is always a close tight fought battle generally. All teams have dedicated kickers for penalties and conversions…

React to full highlights like this bru. The try and tackle compilations out there offer you no context and it will probably become more difficult for you to appreciate the nuances of the game. When you watch a game, you get a better feel for build up play and even refereeing interpretation. Also, instead of ridiculous music in the background, you have commentators that can help you grasp what is going on a little better. If you can find them look for some documentaries on World Cups, Rugby Championships (previously Tri-Nations), Six Nations, Super Rugby, and Heineken Cup, just so you can get a sense of the tournaments history.

The wallabies and springboks are the greatest rivals of the all blacks everybody agrees on that but which rivalry is greater nobody can agree on you see I’m South African so I can tell you every South African rugby fan thinks the boks are the biggest rivals of the all Blacks I presume it’s the same for Wallabies fans but do not know for certain as for the opinion of the all Blacks fans it seems to be split with a slight majority in favour of the springboks and that is based of the ones I’ve talked to

Hi, I'm a Kiwi and the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand is way worse than that of us and South Africa as it's not only Rugby but Rugby League, Netball and Cricket. Probably life as well due to how close our nations are, we usually have something to say about everything about each other and it's usually not good...lol. women's rugby is the same as men's.

Well we must mix in different circles, because for me: South Africa was always THE rival. Let’s be honest; Rugby’s not really a big thing in Australia, the Wallabies are pretty awesome considering that, and their big rival is obviously England. I’ve got plenty of Australian colleagues and associates and they never speak of any “Trans-Tasman rivalry”, I only hear about it in the NZ sports media and usually from tossers like Tony Vietch (who half grew up there).
But then again: I pay no attention to league or netball and not much attention to cricket.

Defence out Of your head it's rugby not American football
Everyone playing is defence and offence if that's easier for you
Kickers are well respected in Rugby
And there are usually one or two dedicated kickers in a team that
Take all the conversions and penalties but there have been Some great and loved kickers in. Rugby all over the world
