With a modified engine management, the 123d has around 240hp - just to mention it again: 2l straight 4 cylinder diesel! Pedal to the metal in a 123d means around 9l/100km, whereas a 125i needs around 11-12l and a 130i around 12-13l. There's just a lack of sound.
If he says this is a car from Europe than he got the horsepower wrong, it has 204bhp not 143bhp. You can find 143bhp in the 118d. Check your stats before you tape it mate.

123d has the n47 1,995 litre engine with dual turbos, 204 HP and 400 Nm. And I can asure you it will keep the wheels spinning if you want to.. fuel consumption is 0.6L/10km
Jimmy Hawke you are absolutely right but the fuel consumption. I own a 123d and the minimum I can possibly get is 0.65 ... but the average is awesome as I am not a driver who likes being economical and still I don’t get over 0.8 per 10km
A 2L diesel engine that makes 200 HP and 300 ft/lb of torque. Thoroughly impressive. I wonder how this engine would fair in a small, proper sports cars, something along the lines of a Lotus Elise. Speed and fuel economy at the same time. That's a future to invest in.
Problem in the US is that they use a really poor quality diesel, which modern European diesels can't use. That's why diesels just won't take off, there is just no incentive. As said, this 123d is a very fast car in Europe, has a top speed of 150MPH and gets there quickly - in other words, it will outperform almost all US made cars, at incredible fuel efficiency. Even a very common VW Golf Diesel is faster and much more economical in diesel.
I have read that the rpm float is part of emissions programming, great review of a car that is a bit different from most one might see in youtube auto reviews. Also, I believe the mileage discrepancy is because of the difference between US and imperial gallons, unless you were converting from l/km, in which case you are quite right. I'm curious though as to whether the cylinders are iron sleeved, as I thought aluminum couldn't take diesel stresses.
