    i have been taking (LSA) plane lessons, about a month ago me and my instructor flew from outside Reykjavik to selfoss and on the way back from selfoss we saw a new thermal vent or a new area that wasn't smoking last time we were there and my instructor took a video of it while i flew the plane, it was probably about 1.5-2.5 km or so south of the main road if you are curious.
    now thinking about it, it might have been some of the first signs that the area was changing

    Great to see a military surplus Quonset Hut still in use just next to the area you showed us!
    PS - in Ventura county, CA, many farmers bought and relocated these steel huts to farms. Several are still in use around Oxnard as auto repair shops.

    Thanks for the geothermal update. Do you have software that can convert the drone images to a set of maps? The drone videos show the changes, but a map view could be loaded into a GIS to do a quantitative analysis of the changes. Scientists would love to have that kind of data.

    3:24 Just a detail: in this image you can read a word, colder than the surroundings, that could be "hippos". To the right of this word you can see warm spots that could be one or several horses (or Icelandic ponies).

      It's by Trölladyngja volcano near the place where eruption no3 took place in August last year.

    I'm curious - do you have to get permission to fly your drone at Geysir? I noticed when I was there about a week ago they've got a load of "no drone" signs there. When I eventually return to Iceland for a proper photography trip, I'm considering taking a drone with me (although I need a new one cos my last one broke! :( ).

    There are no changes in the Great Geysir itself unfortunately. Only in some other springs in the geysir area. (Strokkur is a little bit more powerful, Blesi became a perpetual spouter again with jets to 1m, Konungshver is bubbling again).

    If I remember correctly from my trip in 2018 the Geysir area was a no-drone area. On the other hand there is footage from there. So maybe a permit is required ?

    How hot is the area around the road actually getting? Could you feel it if you touch the ground? Will it keep snow melted off the road?

      The road embankment is very thick and the road administration drilled holes trough it and placed steel pipes there to keep the steam from reaching the surface, and it worked to keep the road safe, at lest still....but it's up to 100c beside the road embankment.

    Your drone shots of Geysir are truly extraordinary, Gylfi. I really enjoyed seeing the changes along the road, too. Has there been more rain or snow this year than usual? In most geothermal areas, much of the water actually comes from the sky, but is heated by the high underground heat flow.

    You are literally the entire outside world's leading source of Icelandic volcanism news and data; we hear about the geysers, we look to you first.
    When Americans think of geysers, we think Yellowstone. Maybe that could be an angle. Hell, come on over and visit with your thermal drone, that'd be extremely informative because I've never seen thermal footage of Yellowstone.
