  • Welcome! Thank you for being here, I appreciate your time and hope you learn something from my videos. I'm starting a short series using my new translucent pillow recipe over wood panels and, perhaps, other predesigned substrates. Let's just see where this takes me! I like the flow of ideas that come with trying new things and can't wait to share that with all of my viewers. We are guaranteed to learn something from each experience which makes it all worthwhile. Sorry for the choppy editing in this one! It was really long and challenging to find places to pare it down.
In this video, I am blooming over a 15" by 1" glue edge pine round, showcasing the natural wood grain and texture. It was a little dicey for a minute but, as it dried, I really fell head over heels for this bloom. We don't always know how paintings will change from wet to dry. Sometimes they change for the better, something not so much. This time it was incredible to watch the paint dry and the translucent pillow fade away under the colors.
My pillow recipe is very different for this technique, compared to regular bloom paintings. I was at Home Depot and starting wondering how an eggshell version of my Glidden Premium base 3 that I use for mixing bloom colors would do under a bloom. I know from experiments that the semi gloss version doesn't retain the neat, tidy cells and lacing. They sort of fall away and go wonky, maybe because there's nothing to hold them in place. I bought a quart of Glidden premium base 3 untinted in eggshell, did a few test blooms on silicone mats, made some alterations and settle on this recipe. I like the translucency of 1 part Glidden to 1 and a half parts American floetrol but it's thin because both components are thinner than the semi gloss version. I had some matte gel medium so I added about a teaspoon to my total of 250 grams of the other two ingredients. I incorporated it well then let that set for about a day. It was just the right consistency. I tried letting my floetrol sit out uncovered for 2 days and it didn't thicken and I don't have time or patience for that so I'm sticking with what works. I do feel it's important to allow the mixture to sit covered loosely for a day before using. It still has the same tendancy to hold it's bubbles as regular pillow and they create the same unsightly holes in your blooms. So to recap, the translucent pillow is 1 part Glidden Premium base 3 untinted in eggshell sheen, 1 1/2 parts American floetrol and 1 teaspoon per cup of matte gel medium.
My bloom paints are mixed with one part gloss varnish and 2 parts Glidden Premium untinted base 3 with a little water to thin. Pigments are mixed the same except I add them to the varnish to dissolve them, then add the untinted based then water to thin. It's always a little thick so water is always needed.
Colors used in this bloom are This Little Piggy tail feather, king of payne and horizon. Liquitex bronze, Amsterdam deep gold, copper and my custom color, shadow green uses pthalo green and Golden's carbon black fluid paint.
My cell activator for this bloom is amsterdam oxide black and Aussie floetrol.

We are! I'm sure you keep a running list of brainstorms like I do and this has been on mine for quite a while. The only way to find out is to try it!
