Mudgee station is in a weird spot where it’s on a closed section of the Gwabegar line but there are parts of track either side that are still operational.
Sad to see so many branch lines closed, they should reopen the Mudgee line to Gulgong or Coonabarabran and also reopen the Murwillumbah line, I’m sure the population and tourism will be big enough to support these lines, anyways good video Phil!
Mudgee Station and the track to it was actually reopened and restored in the early 2000s for a brief period. I’ve never been able to find a reason why but a few years after special services stopped running there and it was a few years after that that they decided to turn it into a building for the restaurant. I think it’s a shame that it ended up like this but unfortunately Mudgee did get a second shot and it didn’t last 😢. In terms of wine trains though trains can still run to Rylstone, which often involves trips out to Mudgee for wine tasting, even if it is by bus.
I'd like to see the station and line restored by a non-profit organisation and volunteers. I was in Mudgee 10 years ago this month as the station was still in its same state, only the Mudgee sign has changed. It was an Arts gallery back then. Thank you Phil for presenting this video.
Hi Phil, interesting seeing Mudgee station, as it looks today. My last train trip to Mudgee was back in December 1980 from Sydney via Lithgow, changing into a rail motor at Lithgow. it is a pity that trains no longer go there. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
Passenger train services to Mudgee ceased in 1985. The station building was used for some years as FreightCorp and Pacific National accommodation and leased by community groups. Much of the interior of the building was converted into a restaurant in 2005, with alterations to the general waiting room, entrance/lobby and booking office, the installation of kitchen facilities and temporary fencing on the station platform. The restaurant opened in February 2006. It was later replaced by an Indian restaurant; however, this ceased operation c. 2015.
Gorgeous station. So glad it’s still being used and its elegance maintained. It was of a time when traveling by train was more than a commute. Beautiful location too. Thanks for a lovely tour Phil. Really enjoying your recent videos of traveling about.
I enjoyed riding the train that ran between Hay and Junee which was closed during the 1986. They said the line wasn't used enough to keep the line running. Something I fail to agree with as the train was always busy when I traveled between Matong - Sydney.
Hey Phil - I really think it's a shame so many branch lines have closed - I love the trip from Lithgow to Mudgee because you also get to see the other side of the Blue Mountains - I hope one day the line is restored for Heritage trips - or wine trips 😊 thank you for your videos 😊
Hey Phill, lovely video! Mudgee could be used for heritage services. On a completely different note, its such a bugger that these awesome kinds of videos are not so much enjoyable to others and only enjoy those crazy and annoying meme type videos, end of an era ad you may call it. And they now have a new language and a new way of speaking. More positively, keep up the great work you have been doing over the last 10 years. You totally deserve it!
Problems with re-opening the Kandos-Mudgee section of the line: Replacement of the wooden trestle bridge over Lue Road at Lue, replacement of the wooden trestle viaduct over the flood plain of the Cudgegong River just south of Mudgee (almost 1km long), and upgrading of several level crossings including warning lights at several places on the Lue Road and elsewhere. None insurmountable, but a business case nowadays needs to be made to spend the money. Of course, if an important mineral discovery was made somewhere along the Line, it would all be done in a flash! Look at how quickly the unfinished Sandy Hollow Line was completed once coal started to be mined at Ulan.
The line has been cut & dead ended just past Rylstone station as the huge wooden bridges past Rylstone & the next station have been deemed unsafe for train use…also the sleepers are wood & are in poor condition…so no tourist trains can now get to Mudgee..
Even a twice weekly service would be good Fri morning- Syd to Mudgee Fri lunchtime - mudgee to Syd Mon morning - Syd to mudgee Mon lunchtime - mudgee to Syd
NSW rail operators have made some very strange iperational decisions since the end of World War 2. I don't expect much "sense" in the next 20 years either.

They should use this station as a heritage ride form like Sydney or Lithgow to here. Like a day trip!
That would be so good!
An early morning departure and a late evening arrival back into Sydney

It's cool but also sad to see the remnants of our formerly massive railway network😢

Did a brake reline out the front of that station on Denning Landseer coach in 1990 or thereabouts on a Saturday afternoon Phil
If only they reopen Mudgee for passenger services again...
That would be great! It’s a nice town
If they do....or ever consider it,I'll be there in a heartbeat
