Are you a new or beginner writer? Is this your first novel? Then one of the best things you can do is to hire the services of a developmental editor. They are instrumental in helping, guiding, and offering suggestions for improving your manuscript. A developmental edit looks at what you do right and what can be improved so that your novel is all it can be, all you want it to be, and all you intended it to be.
A publishing professional with over 30 years of experience, Pam Sheppard also has more than 20 years of editing experience. In this episode she discusses the developmental process, the benefits of a developmental edit, and some common new writer struggles.
Have you used a developmental editor? How was the experience? Drop a comment!

Glad you enjoyed. Yes, Pam is wonderful at explaining things! I love her wall paper and house metaphor!

I like how Pam says that she gets to know the writer through editing. I feel like after doing a self-edit that I learned things about myself.
There was a scene where I realized how my character was acting didn't quite fit. Then I realized I had cast myself into her role.
I'm doing a final clean up before sending it off to an editor. (When you rename a character from Bob to Cailan you want to make sure Bob doesn't randomly appear 😆.)

You’re so right! The writer learns about themselves too! Sometimes stuff we may rather not know.

I think some of what we learn helps is grow. And the more we grow the better our writing.
I'll be reaching out to Pam once I finish my current clean up edit. Pesky commas keep disappearing 😆😉.

@@ladonnabeard34 LOL, I swear a team of gremlins infest my manuscript during revisions.

I need to FIND a developmental editor, but I have ZERO money. Line editing I can do myself. I actually have a decent grasp of story structure and all. My problem is that I just need some guidance on which way to go, and how to bang a few spots into shape in my manuscript. ADHD and choice paralysis are super fun, right?
