I think he is from the south of the Netherlands or maybe Flemish, pronunciation is pretty similar to German. Dutch/Flemish is a German language. Just saying lol.
Schumacher's destiny was always going to be glory. Just like the best in motorporst in general, it really doesn't matter if for some reason he hadn't reach F1, he wouldve find success in any other series. That's why he's a Legend.
In short, his short endurance career was pretty stellar, especially so as a junior competing against endurance veterans. And not to hate on Mazda, but the '91 24 hours was a clown show in the circus that was the "making WSC closer to F1" arc of motorsport. Schumacher and Mercedes deserved the win. Oh well, history is history. I am still sour about the death of Group C.
@@clicheguevara9917 So what gets forgotten a lot is that Mazda didn't run the extra 100kg weight for whatever reason (some people say it's was bias towards Oreca because they built the car, others say it may have been because the Mazda cars always ran as IMSA GTPs at Le Mans, and not Group C), and the extra 100kg everyone else ran had a very detrimental effect on the car's drivability over time and reliability
@@jeracerx You got it right. Mazda inadvertently received a lot of favoritism in 24 hrs of Le Mans despite performing horribly the entire season. They won by circumstances and a win is a win for sure, but it is a hard pill to swallow when you consider the context. Schumacher and the drivers of the C11 for '91 were leading Le Mans despite reliability problems and running the added ballast. They put on an absolute rockstar performance in spite of so many odds being stacked against them. But because Mazda won, history has been rewritten to inflate Mazda's underdog status and that it won completely out of merit and being a legendary earth shattering rotary that was so fast it was banned. Which is not only ridiculous, but flat out misinformation. That is one of the largest reasons why the Le Mans '91 was a clown show and why I think a lot of gloating surrounding Mazda"s win is just nauseating.

Sportscar racing has a similar feel to open-wheelers when it comes to chucking the car through corners Indycar drivers often take part in the Rolex 24 before their season starts. Very methodical to prepare for the big leagues
Yeah the link between modern dpi and indycar can definitelly be made. For lmdh too as the acura will run the next gen indycar engine. As for the 3.5L group c cars they were still relativelly more bulky and heavier to drive but the xjr14 for example could perfectly qualify at the back of an F1 grid. They were insane

Wonderful memories from the WEC Group C era! Schumi was the up and coming dynamite back then. At first I personally thought Wendlinger and Frentzen were going to be the future stars of F1 but we all soon found out that Michael had that EXTRA SPECIAL charisma.
What's missing from this is the reason Benetton got involved in the discussion... At Spa, Tom Walkinshaw (Benetton team manager) persuaded Briatore that Benetton HAD to get Schumacher - because he'd seen how good he was in this other job - Team principal of the TWR Jaguar team in the WSC... It was Ford's purchase of Jaguar that brought Jaguar and Benetton together, with Walkinshaw instrumental in getting Benetton to offer Schumacher a firm contract to race. When the WSC then shut down, he was also able to bring over Jaguar designer Ross Brawn to Benetton for 1992 as Technical Director.. (Rory Byrne was already back, having had Reynard's F1 project cancelled and sold to Pacific Racing). Though Walkinshaw was later shuffled out the door (with Joan Viladelprat) after 1994 following the refuelling rig farce (officially he was 'chosen to run Ligier' which he and Briatore had just bought, anticipating Renault would never pull their supply of engines from a national French team, leaving Benetton/Ligier with the only Renault engines, and Williams stuck for 1995...) it was clear that Walkinshaw and Briatore were just too much ego to have in one place...and Walkinshaw was the fall guy for 1994. Walkinshaw then sold his stake in Benetton, left Ligier and bought Arrows during 1996; but having brought Brawn and Schumacher together at Benetton, set the groundwork for the Ferrari years in many ways.
The Mercedes junior team was a radical idea as the WSC had acquired a reputation (rightly or wrongly) for being a good place for drivers not good enough for F1. Names such as Paolo Barilla, Teo Fabi, or Mauro Baldi or even Derek Warwick or Martin Brundle none of them F1 race winners but more than decent at WSC level. Great video though and some lovely WSC footage there! Let’s hope from 2023 the LM(D)H rules and influx of teams will really enhance the series.
I remember in F1 Decade, where they talk about Spain 1994 (the race where Schumacher finished second despite being stuck in 5th gear for 2/3 of the race). Steve Matchett, who worked as a mechanic in the Benetton team at the time commented on what Schumacher said after the race. He explained that the way he was coping with the handicap of being stuck in 5th gear was trying weird racing lines to accommodate the braking and accelerating difficulties. A byproduct of this was that the fuel economy of the B194, already one of the cars with better fuel economy already (owing to using a V8 engine as opposed to the more widely used V10 engines and especially better than the heavy and thirsty V12 engines Ferrari in particular used), actually improved while he was stuck in 5th gear. If that wasn't impressive enough, not only did he still go on to lap almost as quickly as eventual winner Damon Hill, but he also made 2 pit stops, rejoining the race without stalling the engine. I'll stick my neck out and say that this performance of Schumacher that day was more impressive than any of his 91 wins
For sure and a lot better then when he cut though a huge patch of grass only to crash into Cecotto M3 on the Dtm championship race as a guest driver giving the title to Stuck........

I watched the 1991 Le Mans review a while ago. It was pretty funny hearing the commentators saying that this Michael Schumacher kid could be pretty good.
Group C cars were the best looking race cars, Mercedes C291 and C11, Mazda 787b, Jaguar Silk Cut.. no wonder the Pagani Zonda was modelled after the Group C cars
Things like endurance racing can teach you huge lessons. Like, being consistent and patient can also mean being very fast as you learn what works and what doesn't. Sometimes realizing that, what felt slow was in fact extremely fast. This is why I feel that there is such thing as "the perfect lap" but you might not know it if you did it... There's always a turn you think you could have gone faster or an exit you could have given it more gas. But could you? Or were you straddling the limits and maximizing the net gain so perfectly that changing those things would only make you go slower?... 🤔
The DTM at times had, at least in the 90s up until its inevitable, death, a lurry o ex top level racers too, wonder if that'd make a good video on who was there, how they got there, what they did at the top levels
To be fair, 93-94 in BTCC had the likes of Smokin' Jo, Cecotto, Larini, Tarquini, and so on as well, DTM/ITC had huge huge names too much like WSC did in the 80s/90s
Trying to pronounce a name correctly goes a long way in our cultures (Germany, Austria etc.). Here, if you don't know a name, the first thing you do is ask how to pronounce it properly. You don't get any negative responses if you don't, but actively trying or even succeeding to pronounce a name correctly gives an instantly positive impression of you. Appreciate it.
What I find interesting is why anyone thought a young driver driving Group C was a bad idea. I remember those seasons for Schumacher, Frentzen, and Wendlinger. All three were impressive, and everyone knew they were destined for Formula 1.
And Kreutzpointner. What was interesting is that at the time there was a lot of crossover; F1 wasn't (quite) as exclusionary as it became later if you stepped outside the conventional. 1991 also saw Gachot, Herbert and Weidler at Mazda (who had already been in F1 but were still trying to get back), and Warwick, Brundle, Bellof, Alliot, Brabham (Gary and David) and Blundell were all mixing drives between WSC and F1 whenever drives were available. Toyota followed a similar route; Katayama, Irvine, Ratzenberger all raced at Le Mans for Toyota before getting into F1 (Katayama was the same season in '92). Later on, Montoya, Fisichella, Magnussen (Jan) were given ITC drives on development programmes on their ways to F1. It was really only after the demise of the WSC and the firm establishment of F3000, coupled with the failure of Andretti and later Zanardi, that the ladder became quite so narrow; though Massa snuck in some ETCC drives for Alfa in '01!

Almost correct. Jacky Ickx did not hit Stefan Bellof. Bellof attempted a pass on the outside of the ultra fast Eau Rouge series of corners that lead to Radillion. He went for a disappearing gap, touched the rear of Ickx' Porsche whom he was following, and both cars crashed. Bellof veered into a dirt birm and was killed instantly. It was a terrible lost for racing. Had he lived, he certainly would have been Germany's first F1 World Champion a few years on. There's no doubt about that!!
The team was called Sauber Mercedes, but it was funded by Mercedes hence the "silver arrow" appearance. Sauber entered F1 the year following Mercedes pulling out of Group C taking Mercedes engines and Karl Wendlinger with them. Heinz-Harold Frentzen and Michael Schumacher were left to find F1 seats elsewhere.
Good thing Bernie is gone! They did what they want and it was a shit show! Not to say that it is all better now. Sadly it's not! That they favour the Ferraris at this Year 24h Le Mans was how i put that? Hmm...

I heard his name butchered so often (E.g. the english pronunciation like Mykel Schoomaker), I was perplexed when you said it nearly perfect.
To be honest "nearly perfect" is still off by a bit. He pronounced the ch in Michael the same as in Schumacher when it isn't pronounced like that.

Almost correct. Jacky Ickx did not hit Stefan Bellof. Bellof attempted a pass on the outside of the ultra fast Eau Rouge series of corners that lead to Radillion. He went for a disappearing gap, touched the rear of Ickx' Porsche whom he was following, and both cars crashed. Bellof veered into a dirt birm and was killed instantly. It was a terrible lost for racing. Had he lived, he certainly would have been Germany's first F1 World Champion a few years on. There's no doubt about that!!

The team was called Sauber Mercedes, but it was funded by Mercedes hence the "silver arrow" appearance. Sauber entered F1 the year following Mercedes pulling out of Group C taking Mercedes engines and Karl Wendlinger with them. Heinz-Harold Frentzen and Michael Schumacher were left to find F1 seats elsewhere.

Much of shumacher's talent came from the favoritism of the brands and the FIA itself.
You can say Mercedes paid for the seat in the Jordan F1 car but they wouldnt have done this without talent. The only one who saw dollars was Bernie Ecclestone making F1 more famous in germany with a german driver.
