  • Our soybean harvest is done and even the farmer got excited for a change! It didn't happen without a few more hiccups, but it happened none-the-less. And a reminder we are all in this together. From the bottom of my sleeve-wearing heart, THANK YOU for being here.
I'm having a hard time replying to all of your comments, but know they are appreciated and YOU are appreciated. Until next time, farm hard, live well. And if you don't farm, but you consume or wear or use farming products (pretty sure that's all of you)...you support us. And without you we wouldn't be able to do what we do. So thank you!

No two days are the same around here and I use this vlog to show the good, the bad, the hard and the rewarding we find in this life. A few months back when you got the gleaner going I congratulated you on your accomplishment. I want to encourage you again. 47 years ago I worked for a young farmer; I was 20, he was 22. My landlord, who owned the feed mill and the farm where I raised hogs as a sideline, put down my boss saying, "He's farming with such junk!" My boss's dad had 5 boys and he tried to make it where all could keep farming one way or another. He succeeded with 3. One became a priest and another got mad and quit. The dad was like Lawrence, he was a good mechanic. He went to auctions far and wide and picked up bargain tractors and machinery and rebuilt and restored them so that his sons could get started farming without going so far into debt, (which they had to anyway to a lesser extent.) 47 years later the family is still going strong but the mill is gone and my landlord's farm belongs to somebody else. It's so easy for someone to thoughtlessly say, "Why don't you go buy a $500,000.00 combine." Like saying "what's wrong with you? Why ain't you great like me." The guys saying this are usually in 1 of 3 categories. 1) the arm chair quarterbacks that aren't really players themselves but think they know how to tell you how to do it. 2) someone spoiled rotten born with a gold spoon that thinks the rest of the world should give up and go work for them or 3) the fools that won't be around much longer because they are so deep in debt that when something goes wrong, they lose what they never actually owned to their creditors.
That old machinery is great and you don't have to be a supernerd to keep the computers working. Most of the supernerds that I've used to fix my computers can't tell you what went wrong, they just know how to restore original settings or replace parts that they don't know why won't work.
I watch your channel because I like seeing ingenuity in action doing what they can with what they got.

"IT'S PAID FOR" is the best equipment of all, my dad taught me that when I was just a boy . When you can fix your equipment that's all the more reason to stay away from the debt. I have no doubt that Lawrence foreseen that there would be kinks to work through when y'all bought the combine. You were extremely gracious in your defense of Gerdi, and well within your side of the fence to say something. Besides, how boring would it be to watch a brand new shiney combine wheel through a field of beans, without dramatic pauses. Have a steak dinner, y'all earned it.

The Gleaner may not be new but when Lawrence gets in the cab to do some harvesting, no agent from a finance company can tap on the window to say that he is taking possession of it, because of non payments.
Very wise Bernards can sleep peacefully at night with that in mind.

I'm sitting here remembering the only new equipment my dad ever bought. We were farming in Michigan and we were using a Ford Ferguson, and an old Oliver for our farm work. Not sure of the reason but..., Dad bought a brand new 1953 Ford tractor right off the showroom floor. That was a good tractor and we used it very extensively for about 3 years. Watching Lawrence and your son, AND you. fixing your machines and keeping them running is an inspiration. Keep the videos coming and you'll keep an 80-year-old Ohio man happy.

I worked with my uncle on his dairy farm and used an old Allis WD something raking, no power steering tricycle and I hated it. Had a cousin killed on it packing silage. His main tractors were Olivers since the dealer was close. All his equipment was old but his son could fix anything. They were great times in my life.

A very fond project from about 1993 is safely stored in my mind of collecting an old rusty and seized up bale elevator from a scrap yard for my brother and spending weeks freeing it up, oiling and greasing it back to life.
I derived great satisfaction from seeing it operate perfectly afterwards for a decade of summers, as efficiently as a new one. I have VHS footage of it in action.
      Long live old Gerdi!!

From Kansas City, it is always interesting to watch a Millennial Farmer or Welker Farms harvest video and then a How Farms Work video and then one of yours. Being able to compare the ression of smaller single family farms to the larger scale operations, the one thing that stands out is that it isn't the acres or equipment, but rather the work ethic and attitude that goes into creating food and fiber for the world.

One thing I like about you Meredith is when you bare your soul you are as beautiful in the spirit as you are in the physical. I enjoy the daily family farm activities of all of your wonderful family. I know your struggles and appreciate your victories. My dad owned a dairy in the 40’s and the 50’s and my brother and I and two of my dad’s brothers worked very hard with old, out dated equipment and vehicles to help dad make a go of it until the large corporate dairy’s finally squeezed us out of the business. God bless you all and I am praying for and see a bright future for your two precious children. Also, I had two knee replacements years ago one of them twice and I am doing fine. Please tell Lawerence that I am praying and believing for his successful knee replacements and full recovery. Pastor Earl Baker, Lt Col. Earl Baker, USAF, Ret.

Breakdowns are common with all hard used equipment. You just have to repair, then "keep on keeping on" until it breaks again. I buy heavy duty parts to fix things on my tree farm because it make it longer between repairs. I get a rust hole on anything, I just rivet or weld a plate over the hole or cracked joint, then go back to work. I am a "jack of most trades", and a master of a few of them due to my Dad and my Uncle. I'm grateful to them both for sharing their smart knowledge with me. Off the farm, I used to help being an airframe mechanic and "gofer" at the 1941 Airshow in Geneseo, NY in the 80's, and loved every minute of it. Aircraft of every type I fixed and got a ride in. Heavy fun for a Twenty something year old kid. I got into Avionics that way, too. "Watch and learn" they said, and I learned. I miss those days badly. Flying in those WWII aircraft from a B-17 to a PT-17 was an experience I will never forget. Knowledge is precious, as you well know.

I'm not against big farmers but I'm against big farm corporations that are killing the little farmers. I'm against the big money gotten from the government (our tax dollars). I'm against the banks not helping the little guys. What I have and it's very small it's more of a hobby now that I'm retired but I like a little extra income but banks won't even talk to me and what little I have is all paid for but that doesn't matter to a bank. Never had the nice pretty shined up stuff when we had the dairy and our tools always fit and fixed our old rusty equipment but at the end of the day when we laid our heads on the pillow we didn't have to worry about bank payments or trying to keep up with the Jones. Good country living, farm raised food and family at the dinner table with a prayer of thanks is what I remember most. Just remember before the big farmers there was just the little guys paving the way. They work just as hard maybe even harder.

I am so happy for you and your channel. So much closer to reality tv than any show on tv. I was raised on a dairy farm in Illinois. My memories of growing up raising beef cattle, milking 100 dairy cattle, raising hogs, chickens and many different crops. There were 6 of us kids being raised on that family farm that my grandparents built. My oldest son lives there and farms it now and what a blessing it is to step foot in that old farm house and those old buildings and still drive some of the tractors I used to drive. So it brings me joy to watch you raise your family on a family farm and thank you for sharing it with the world. Your channel will help bring faith back to the farmer.

Thanks for keeping it real. God gave you land and animals to watch over. Ya'll are doing a wonderful job doing that, raising kids, and showing the world how to live the good life, while at the same time, not compromising your integrity or your beliefs. I grew up on a farm, and my grandfather used to say "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right...and if it ain't worth doing right, it ain't worth doing at all." Ya'll are doing it right! A lot of people forget what true farming the “Old Fashion Way” is. You work hard to achieve your goals and when you do it’s overwhelming with pride you “gotter dun” You and your husband are the true back bones to our country and what this country grew up with. Not the huge multi million dollar operations we all see now a days. I grew up on a farm just like yours and loved everyday being able to have a different challenge or different goal to get done. Be proud of your land your equipment and most of all be proud of who you are as a Farming family.

Hello Meredith! I have never commented before now but just would like to say I really enjoy your videos and I’m thankful you are willing to share your life and family with us! Such a sweet family! But I believe at least in my heart that we love to tune in to your channel because of you! There are many channels about farming but only one with the Bernard family so let me just say, it is you that we enjoy and I for one am very thankful to God for you! It’s amazing how he puts wonderful and beautiful people in front of us! Everyday the sparrow wakes up and finds his food. No fridge to store it but still finds it. And everyday God provides for us! Some with new equipment and some with old, but he will provide! Your amazing! Love you guys! Thank you!

Excuse me a moment to rant, Merdi. All you people giving them a hard time need to go buzz off. Just because they don't put they're farm into debt for millions of $, don't mean they 're doin it wrong. I farmed for over 25 yrs and NEVER needed that $350k harvester or $150k tractor. Lawrence is a real farmer in my eyes. Most farmers with they're fancy expensive equipment can't plant a straight line without GPS. I think they did awesome this harvest with they're equipment. Sorry Merdi. I just get a little defensive when it concerns you guys. You ARE the real deal. Love you guys!

Your combine is just fine sweetie. Those old gleaner combines are tough. They are still here and doing the job they were intended to do. And they will be here long after some of the newer ones have stopped working and can't go any more. Don't worry about what some people say. They're always looking for something to complain about anyway. Hope you and your family have a happy and unforgettable Thanksgiving. God bless each of you . Keep up the great videos . 😄👍🙏

you nailed how I feel about the negative comments concerning how I farm what I do don't do and the fact all I got is old equipment. I like to click on their channel name and then I find the words, "this channel has no content" which translates too they got not a clue so I just keep my mouth shut. we did have a roller coaster weather week here in NC. you got a shot of Lawrence rolling along at what I consider a great pace and this told me he got the combine dialed in. somehow I knew he would. so glad you did not get your hands near that cutter bar. I loved how you ended this vlog with "night night Gurdy" bye bye for now.

  • @bransonred1

You are not wrong. With the introduction of computers, sensors and cables, manufacturers have taken a lot of the simple repairs out of the farmers hands. And on another topic, your farm and operation might be considered small to you, but yours is considered very large to small farm operators. We all have the same heart.

When I see the ingenuity and repair capability of “The Farmer “ and the work he does to keep your old “paid for” equipment working I think of Bloomberg’s recent statement that to be a farmer you just put a seed in the ground and wait for it to come up. He should try doing LB’s work for a week.

Most the TH-cam channels I prefer to watch are about farming. My dad was a truck driver (crude oil) but managed to run our small farm. He never did the farming himself except for a couple of years. We always had live stock (pigs, cattle, ducks and chickens). Thats how my mom and dad managed to raise 8 kids on a farm. Most the boys in the family either worked our farm or were hired by farmers, mostly bucking hay bails in the summer but some of us put in crops. Anyway farming is a good life, one to be proud of doing and choosing to pursue. I’m glad to see you and your husband chose to work the farm and better yet home school your kids. Your doing a great job. Good to see Lawrence kick up his heels now and then. Thanks to you both for sharing your lives..

Great video. Your followers that don’t like your equipment don’t have a dime in any of it. I was raised on a farm in Lucama,North Carolina and my family farmed 100 acres of tobacco and row crops with older equipment. We had a lot of repairs to make yearly but we made it. You and the farmer are doing the best you can and that’s what matters.
The big farmers have nicer newer equipment, but are in debt over there heads. I respect and appreciate a farm like yours and love the way you raise your children on the farm with chores. You are a beautiful and hard working lady. Stay focused on what the Lord leads to and trust in the Lord and you will never be wrong.
