Every cruise with Carnival I've brought a portable router. It's battery operated and fits in my pocket. I have it setup to connect to the WiFi and then rebroadcast a private SSID that we then connect all our devices to. The ships WiFi sees it as one device so you don't need to pay for multiple devices. They also use DNS filtering so this allows to set your own DNS servers. A lot of people try and use VPNs and while this sometimes works the speed of the connection actually can get overloaded by the overhead of the VPN connection. I don't agree with it, I think it's stupid for them to take your Starlink Mini, but rules is rules.
@@NoPantsProfitsAbsolutely you should be able to use it in port. How could they possibly justify not giving it back to you in port? I'm getting hot under the collar the more I read about this and Carnival. This decision from the top is infantile and demeans the company. I'm cruising from Brisbane to Papua New Guinea in November with P&O which is Carnival (P&O's name will change to Carnival in 2025) and a friend living in Papua New Guinea asked me to bring a mini to him. I was planning on testing it on the ship so now I'll be circumspect when I use it. Thanks for the information. And I love your channel!
I think no, they shouldn’t allow you to use it in port. Because like any other prohibited items brought on board, you don’t get it back until the end of the sailing. Logistically, it would be untenable if every guest could request prohibited items each time they arrived at a port, and then had to have it re-confiscated when they re-boarded. Can you imagine? That would be a nightmare to manage at scale.
I was on the Miracle two week before you, granted we went to Alaska, but with the premium package we got 75-100mbits the entire time. I even has a firestick attached to our TV and had 24 access to our local channel using TH-cam tv.
I was in Alaska early in the season on miracle and knew the upload was constrained, not the download as much... never saw speeds over 50 though. I do have a router (ship access point, not personal device) right outside my cabin! Just ran in port in Hawaii and got 4.82/4.71
I had no idea carnival blocks WiFi calling. I had some issues occur at home during my trip and have not been able to phone my lawyer without paying 1.99 a minute. Ludacris. I hope this changes positively for the cruise passengers. Stay well Richard!
Can't wait for that starlink phone service. Though I doubt it will be a decent internet service. An estimation shows the theoretical bandwidth could be 1-10 mbps DOWN and below 1 mbps UP . I mean if that's actually something that a phone will have in a year or two then it's mind blowing.
I agree. Starlink mini itself is an amazing piece of kit and will be replacing my cellular hotspot for use when NOT on a cruise! It's small enough to fit into an under the seat backpack of an airplane with all accessories and 4 batteries that can power it for nearly 24 hours.
@@akita96thmaybe but I think it will be within reasonable pricing. Wouldn't you consider starlink service affordable? Look how many people Are using this
I am guessing that when these ships get out to international Waters, they may begin jamming Starlink signals. i'm not sure what the international laws are when in international waters is about jamming satellite signals, but I would not put it past cruise lines. And yes, I agree with you. I cannot wait for the T-Mobile starlink service to begin! The same problem will be coming to airlines.
Great vid, informative and funny! On my last cruise the line for Wi-Fi complaints was longer than at the buffet! These companies are nickel and diming and that’s not good PR. Good news about T-Mobile though because our family just switched! Freaking better signal now than with AT&T!
What I find interesting is this is Starlink against Starlink, Elon should make a clause that Starlink providers cannot impede Starlink users. The purpose of these ships having Starlink is to build goodwill for both the brands and show people the power of Starlink, I'm not sure this decision helps with that mission. Just saying.
@@NoPantsProfits Thank you for the reply. It Wouldn't be enough for me. You aren't doing any harm to anyone. It's nothing illegal. It's not a threat or danger to ANYone or ANYthing. So my salary depends on having a good internet connection. That means: Carnival doesn't allow me to work on their fleet. It's a big no go for me. I want stress relief on a cruise. Not stress increase. My friends were shocked, when I showed them your video. By the way, great video. I mean, I can understand, that they don't want it by the pool or so. Fine. But in my suite? Really? That's an absolute no go.
everyone should boycott the on ship wifi service and bring their own. remember. we the people are in charge. we get what we want, or we get what we allow.
The problem is when there is only one option, if you need it, you have to use that option, unfortunately! People book cruises years in advance and cannot change them or lose their deposits.
We have an eSIm data plan that works on cruise ships and on land. Way cheaper than onboard Wifi. It can be both a pro and con they do not offer unlimited plans.
But at sea you still have the connection routed through the ships communications link. The cruise line is getting a piece of the action albeit at a much lower rate. If any data is attached to that it would be interesting to know what the down and up data rates are - probably throttled and capped.
@@NoPantsProfitsI think YT blocked the link I sent. We use the Cruise and Land eSIM Data plan from Gigsky. They routinely run promotions of 10%-20% off about every other weekend. Before purchasing I would recommend checking their supported phones list to ensure your phone is supported.

I really have to wonder if this would’ve happened to you if the segment about getting successful connection in the room was NOT included in the video. 🤔
Yeah it would have..... I think they are MORE concerned about a bunch of dishes onboard running their the pool deck! I can tell their CTO really didn't like my little Do Not Share joke... because anyone with an IT degree understands that!
Wifi congestion is a thing. If several 1000 people on a ship brought their own wifi kit that'll result in impaired wireless network performance so I'm surprised they don't restrict wifi travel routers too. The mini has a wireless AP built in so would fall under that too.
@NoPantsProfits they do indeed. Again that fact doesn't prevent them from prohibiting use of that feature. Like anything in life you're only in trouble if caught. Edit: I should clarify i'm not in favour of these rules being made. Just I'm surprised they don't already attempt to prohibit use of your own wireless equipment.
I just saw your other video about the Starlink Mini dish working from your room and thought that was awesome. Answered sooo many questions I had as I thought there was no reason I can't do that as well. The internet on NCL was much more expensive than Carnival even with less days, and it is straight up highway robbery. I think had you not made and uploaded a video you might have gone undetected. Possibly also not broadcast the SSID of the wifi network. I only recently purchased a Starlink dish so I do not have experience with the different settings and options the software has. This might open the eyes of all the cruise lines out there and have them update their TOS to strictly enforce no use of your own internet to protect their bottom lines.
@@NoPantsProfits he could possible do that, but only if he has the leverage let's say of being the one to provide the internet to the ship. I know Starlink powers NCL, but I don't think it powers Disney Cruise Line, and I'm not sure about others.
@@meanderingmouse Thats good to know, from what I saw on the website I couldn't find anywhere stating that their internet was powered by Starlink. I have a cruise coming up this Mardi Gras on the Wish and after seeing your video ordered a mini to go with my standard dish. Paying for the boat internet for a week and having the cost be three times higher than my home monthly fiber internet is so painful. My job pretty much requires me to be available no matter where I am so getting a mini was always going to happen, but this just solidified that purchase for me.
So does this mean that anyone with an iPhone can no longer bring iPhones because they would legally be classified as satellite phones? I mean right above the now corrected "satellite dish" prohibition, it literally says "Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), communication scanners, wideband receivers, satellite phones, transformers, lasers and laser pointers. " I've never had a great experience with the WiFi. I'm glad we have things like starlink to shake up the industry and force change.
@@NoPantsProfits funny enough, I just bring my laptop, use connectify and do the private network trick. Problem still though is the wifi just sucks. Even with a premium package. Next year T-Mobile is bringing texting to all phones. Not just iPhone. By 2025, they are expected to have calling and data as well. Do you think these changes will actually force carnival to update or will they stay in the past for a while? Do you think pricing will reflect the lack of WiFi plans being purchased?
@@leroyjethrogibbs They are just gonna cut the cruise line out.... and starlink will link to the onboard starlink....I have some inside info on that..... think of it like a wifi calling of sorts or a cellular booster!

This is funny. Years ago i used to bring a bgan terminal and an iridium phone so i could work from their ships. Back when they charged by the minute for internet. Id use ship intenet when i needed 'fast' connections, but the bgan charged by the bit so i could stay online and messaging cheap. Ever since they started with the trip based plans their Internet speed sucks cuz everyone is on it all day long its impossible to work from the ship anymore.
I think companies slow to embrace progress will be left behind, I certainly won’t be investing further in any organisation that takes it a step further to inconvenience my un-intrusive comfort requirements with arbitrary decisions. It seems extremely petty to confiscate a valuable tool that poses no harm or risk to others.
How did they first detect you had it and were using it? Oh, you had it out in the open in public in front of their staff, who could see what it was. I see. Maybe using it on your rooms balcony would be a more private secure place to use it.
The regulations are so behind technology. I'd imagine back in the days it makes sense to not bring a big old satellite dish onto a cruise, but starlink mini should totally be allowed on cruise ships, if the ship itself fails to provide decent wifi at affordable prices.
They may have misspelled dish, but it surely still would fall under “other internet related equipment”. But we agree their policy is fairly widespread which gives them way too much discretion.
Gouging passengers for a few bucks here and another few bucks there and NO SIR you can't bring your decent Internet service on board because the ship makes a few million bucks here and there off this little scam.
Because of you they changed their prohibited items page to satellite dish. LOL I checked the way back machine to double check! If it makes you feel better NCL took my Garmin inreach lol but they missed the starlink mini HAHA.
Does it work in an airplane? If it is working through the cruise ship seems like the airplane would be no problem considering you're even closer to the satellite?
@@NoPantsProfitslol yes I understand I can use it on Hawaiian airlines already, but I'm asking if you could use your Starlink Mini from your plane seat successfully? There are many airlines that don't have Starlink and their internet is worse than cruise lines especially international.

Please respond to my question if you can. The Cruise Lines are worried about losing revenue for their limited and extremely expensive internet service. They are one of the last types of businesses that even charge for Wi-Fi. Think about it. Where else today do you have to pay for basic Wi-Fi access ....... hotels, doctor's office, stores, fast food, shopping centers, etc. How did they catch you ? Did you use it out in the open where they saw it ? If you had kept it hidden, would they have been able to find the source / you ?

@@NoPantsProfits I was on a previous voyage, but that ship was broken in every way even when I took it, but yeah, they could have benefited from a passenger with a backup
I'm going to play devil's advocate - the balcony use is probably their real problem. Cruise lines are extremely paranoid about fire. I know Royal Caribbean bans both power strips and extension cords (I had mine confiscated), and also has rules about leaving balcony doors open as well as running cords through them. All to do with fire. There's no way to know, but if you only did the first half of the video from the pool deck you might not have gotten in any trouble.

You don't need a license for marine VHF radios, EPIRBs, radar, GPS, LORAN receivers, depth finders, or CB radios. However, you do need a license for MF/HF single side-band radio, satellite communications, or telegraphy.
Operating procedures
All users must follow FCC rules for calling other stations, maintaining a safety watch, and relaying distress messages.
Exemptions
Some vessels may be exempt from FCC rules due to their size, the radio equipment on board, or other factors.
International waters
When operating in international waters, you must meet FCC rules, be mindful of other ITU Regions' frequencies, and not exceed their frequency limitations.
But don't ships go by laws of were its registered
Satellite Disc which could be any antenna really, routers and other internet related equipment - such as the DISH itself, panel, disc, etc could all be included in that "other internet related equipment" as a catch-all. I don't agree with it, I think it's stupid for them to take your Starlink Mini, but rules is rules.
Yep, great opportunity for someone to allow them! Do you think I should be able to use it in port?
Remember back in the days when people went on cruises to disconnect and relax.
Those were the days!
Were you able to test out your non-shared bridge before they confiscated? Very interested if you got that to work through their network.
Yes, can confirm it works.
Thanks for all the info you have shared.
Thanks for following along.

Anything associated with that despecable Musk will be expensive.
@@akita96thmaybe but I think it will be within reasonable pricing. Wouldn't you consider starlink service affordable?

I am guessing that when these ships get out to international Waters, they may begin jamming Starlink signals. i'm not sure what the international laws are when in international waters is about jamming satellite signals, but I would not put it past cruise lines. And yes, I agree with you. I cannot wait for the T-Mobile starlink service to begin! The same problem will be coming to airlines.
Interesting.... because the ships themselves use Starlink too!
@@NoPantsProfits I did not realize they use Starlink
Wow someone bring this topic up to brand ambassador John ask why it was taken from you and did he hear this
It's gonna get big, just wait..... I'm not gonna do anything. I just report the news, even if it happens to me.
Thanks for the video. Just told my friend, to never book carnival or the carnival group anymore!
They are working on a permanent solution.... at first I agreed with you.... but they seem to be willing to allow in port use at least.
@@NoPantsProfits Thank you for the reply. It Wouldn't be enough for me. You aren't doing any harm to anyone. It's nothing illegal. It's not a threat or danger to ANYone or ANYthing. And they can't come with the argument, that it would "interfere with their systems" or anything like that. I pay a lot of money for the cruise and get discriminated? No, thanks! I work online.
Be interesting to see what change happens coming off this! Happy cruising!
Change always comes to those who force it.

We have an eSIm data plan that works on cruise ships and on land. Way cheaper than onboard Wifi. It can be both a pro and con they do not offer unlimited plans.
Got the info? Feel Free to post in another comment and I'll be happy to pin it.... even if it's a referral link!

I mean every phone from the 14 to in a few hours the 16 has satellite capabilities!
T-Mobile's sat connectivity will not be an issue, no high speed data.
Yeah, might want to research that more. The T-mobile service might have enough bandwidth for e-mails, text messages, and maybe very light web browsing. But nothing like streaming video.
It's apples and oranges......he loses.
It is a sad state of affairs that Carnival Cruise Lines can do a better job of policing Starlink Dishes on their boats than the US Navy.
They didn't catch it.... I showed it.... but still a funny as hell comment!

They will not be able to detect it!

Every modern high end android phone is a travel router....
@NoPantsProfits yes. Though that doesn't stop them from stating you cannot use that feature.
@@lmaoroflcopter The last 3 iPhones have satellite phones built in too......they gonna ban every modern smartphone?
@NoPantsProfits they do indeed. Again that fact doesn't prevent them from prohibiting use of that feature.
Like anything in life you're only in trouble if caught.
Edit: I should clarify i'm not in favour of these rules being made. Just I'm surprised they don't already attempt to prohibit use of your own wireless equipment.
Based on a lot of videos I have seen in the last year, why would anyone sail Carnival anyway.
The longer cruises are fine... I sorta agree on the quick weekend ones.
Carnival is cheap for a reason!.....but they charge the FUQ out of you for everything! 🤡
Yeah.... but Elon is crazy! He may re-write the contract to require them to allow it!
@@NoPantsProfits he could possible do that, but only if he has the leverage let's say of being the one to provide the internet to the ship. I know Starlink powers NCL, but I don't think it powers Disney Cruise Line, and I'm not sure about others.
Starlink dishes have been spotted on DCL ships. Saw pics of them attached to the concierge sun deck (6 per side) on the Fantasy.
Figures, it was too good to be allowed.
Agree!!
Please do a top ten list of other things you have gotten in trouble for on a cruise. 😂
Wish I had one! Lol
I've never had a great experience with the WiFi. I'm glad we have things like starlink to shake up the industry and force change.
Yep! I'm making a video right now on iPhone satellite connection from the ship.... gotta confiscate every android phone too because it's a router!

Oh, you had it out in the open in public in front of their staff, who could see what it was. I see.
Maybe using it on your rooms balcony would be a more private secure place to use it.
Kind of hard to use it on the balcony. Line of sight is required and at the correct angle. What If the ship turns? You'd have to continually adjust.
I made a video showing it was better than what was onboard!
The regulations are so behind technology. I'd imagine back in the days it makes sense to not bring a big old satellite dish onto a cruise, but starlink mini should totally be allowed on cruise ships, if the ship itself fails to provide decent wifi at affordable prices.
Fully agree with you.... as does ELON!
They may have misspelled dish, but it surely still would fall under “other internet related equipment”. But we agree their policy is fairly widespread which gives them way too much discretion.
Combine and iPhone and and android.... and you have a satellite phone and a router.....
