Funny thing is that I'm recording a show on the Science Channel right now called "Lost City of the Monkey" and came here before it started to see if it would be worth recording. Looks like it will be a good one.
Everyone interested on the matter should read Buddy Levy 'River of Darkness'. It's about conquistador named Francisco Orellana who did the first Amazon river expedition and found out that the banks of Amazon are full of villages and towns. Some of these village where so close to each other "no more than a arbalest shot away" that they where in continuous village chain for like 180 miles.
You asked him...what did they use this thing for? He said I don't know. At that moment I said I'm in. 🙂 he didn't make something up to seem smart. A real person.
I would have chartered a helicopter and a team of forest rangers, flew them to the T1 zone, picked out an optimim landing spot, had them rapell in and clear that spot to safely land 2 helicopters. Down the trees. Chopper comes back at preset time and day. If necessary, cable the downed trees, lift them out with chopper. They would eventually have to clear trees to excavate the sight anyway. Since they already knew where it was, why bother trekking in on foot?
