Thanks Michael for sharing. For this song, the band includes Don Was (Bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Jack Pearson (guitar), Audley Freed (Acoustic), Rami Jaffee (keyboard), Kenny Aronoff (drums), Jimmy Hall (Harmonica) & The McCrary Sisters - Regina, Ann and Alfreda (Backing vocals). RIP Gregg's friend Chank who recently passed, for whom this song was written for. Looking forward to Bob's book "Play all Night"
I don’t understand anything you say about chords, scales, etc. I watch your channel because your enthusiasm and joy makes me happy. I appreciate what the musicians are doing so much more through your analysis. Thank you Mr. Palmisano!
Me too Janelle! Michael's pure love for music, his passion and humility is what hooks many of us. And that ear!! Oh my gosh he hears things I sure don't. But he's teaching me along the way. Thank you Michael.
“You went but you didn’t arrive” - dude. Best description of that D to C change ever, totally made song writing sense in a way I’ve not thought of before. Thanks for that.
Exactly!! As a musician , I feel like we have all went but we haven’t arrived. That’s why we love music so much. Just playing trying to get somewhere but there’s no destination and we don’t care.
True. One of the first shows to play at the end of the lockdowns I bought us tickets to the Buffalo NY show for my fiancé’s birthday and WOW. The Covid checks at the single entrance caused a huge logjam so Church waited two hours to start the show just to make sure everyone was able to get to their seats. Just a great experience all around.
I can assure you he is. Without a doubt one of the greatest live performances I’ve ever seen and most certainly the best country concert I’ve ever seen
Funny story he’s from my town in Granite falls NC and I saw him about 10 years ago walk in to Walmart with an acoustic and play for an hour straight was truly amazing! Super nice guy and even when he got big he stayed humble!
Shedding tears with you, man! Just amazing! I'm 57, from Atlanta and have never heard this song, and cannot believe it... Another reason I subscribed years ago, b/c you geek out with the rest of us and feel it like those of us who feel it, too! So freaking amazing. I'll be going to look for this, as well, as an acoustic guy, & vocalist, I'll be hoping to add this to the list. 'Pro Ball'... what a descriptive phrase for moments like this. Jack Pearson story. I moved to Franklin, TN in 2004. On a rare date night got a chance to head into Nashville to see a band quick before we needed to relieve the sitter. Went to 3rd & Lindsley as my music industry buddy said there was a guy playing there who's played with everybody. So, not knowing him or his appearance, this dude who looked like he had just left his accounting job downtown walks up and put on the guitar; I was expecting him to tune it, check levels and hand it to the 'player'. Well, this guy WAS the player... Haha! Watching from 6' away at the front table, to say he touched up my face, in the precious hour we had before we had to leave, is an understatement. This guy can do it ALL! A master player. Such great vid! I know I'm late to the party on this but just now seeing it. Thank you again for your dedication to your heartfelt mission. God Bless!!!
My man Michael, you picked a gem! Gregg Allman was a generational song writer and totally deserving of this AMAZING tribute in his honor. All of the remarkable performers were perfectly suited and all the players absolutely SPOT ON throughout. It’s definitely worth the watch beginning to end.🎵🎼🎶🥁🎸
Bass player, and I learned.. I've been tracking the Allman Brothers for years and you taught me what I was missing. Not only for guitar players but you help bass player too. Thanks.
I'm not a musician. The ABB is part of my DNA . Thank you for this video . You got me excited when you got excited and I didn't know what I was getting excited about other than I know you know what going on with the music . I FELT you man! I can't explain in words how I know how you felt because to me that is just the ABB playing how they play . They were Special ! I think you are Special for putting it out there for everyone to realize how talented the band was ! By the way , you are not so bad yourself ! You have a new liker/follower . Again , Thank You ! Have a great day !
I have the vinyl of win, lose or draw. Excellent. Also. This whole tribute to Gregg Allman is fabulous. My favorite is Gregg singing with Jackson Browne on these days.
Thanks for spending time breaking this down and sharing your enthusiasm for making and enjoying great music. I'll enjoy this excellent song (and performance) even more now.
Michael Michael Michael!! You're such a brilliant brilliant brilliant mentor and teacher!! Man you've just enlightened the shit out of my mind !! I finally hacked that Allman brothers signature movement and sound !! We keep the bass note but move the triad !! Man that !! and I mean that flat seventhness !! Hhhhhhhh I laughed and almost cried xD when you said like we went but not arrived that broke me into pieces and I mean that !! That where the glorious but graceful singing of gregg is all about !! Michael what a musical breakthrough you just blessed me with !! Heaaaaaaaaarted thanks man !! Your lessons are puuuuuuuuuuure gooooooold !!!! May god bless you and your loving family!!!
Great Job Michael, I love to see someone feel the song the way I do. Chills, chills chills!! I was lucky enough to be there, it was a fabulous night all around. This was one of the many highlights. I love your videos. Thank you
I love your channel. The knowledge you share is insanely helpful and generous, but your excitement and how genuinely giddy you are is what makes it all so entertaining and special. Keep doing your thing, appreciate you!
Thank you for doing this. My mom was probably Eric Church's #1 fan. She passed last october from stage 4 cancer just after we went together to see her 20th Eric Church concert when he opened his tour in Lexington last year. I still find it hard to listen to him because Eric is all she listened to (for damn good reason). As soon as he started singing in this video it brought me to tears. All that to say, Thank you for what you do Michael. It means more to some of us than you might realize. Keep it up man.
Just wanted to say, I don't meet a lot of people that have my kind of passion for those "little" things in music. I hear music that will bring me to tears, not because the song is sad but, because the arrangement, vocals, chord choices etc just overflow my ears with joy. You seem to have that too my friend. I enjoy your posts and your playing. Nice job sir.
This reaction and analysis is masterclass!! Your appreciation for this song, the musicians and recognition of the original without hearing is so appreciated!! This has been one of my favorites since it was released! Dickey Betts plays the original lead lines that influenced Jack Pearson! Gregg sings with great pain!! Thanks again!
Wow…invited by the Tedeschi/Trucks band?!? Dude that’s so awesome. So happy for you. I saw Derek play when he was with the Allman Bros back in the mid 2000’s many times opening for Dave and Tom Petty and Derek was on fire every show. I remember the setting, there’s a giant lawn at the Meadows in Hartford, CT and everyone was partying not paying much attention to the music but the second Derek came on the big screen and starting soloing, everyone stopped what they were doing and just silently watched in awe. He was playing crazy Indian modal scales and all types of really different sounding lines that blew everyone away. I’ve seen a ton of amazing guitarists live including John McLaughlin, Steve Vai, lots of great jazz guitarists and classical guitarists while in music school but No One had the effect on me that Derek did. He brought the entire audience together and everyone, even if they were just there to party, were asking who he was and he was the talk of every show. There’s a video of Derek when he was like 12 years old playing the break down of “ Layla “ and I watch that think, he was always that good. He sounds like he does now. A true prodigy.
Definitely not my type of music AT ALL but i can truly appreciate good musicians and no one brings that point forward better than Michael. Thanks for high-lightning those little details to point out greatness even in the music some of us rarely run into.
Jack Pearson is playing a bone stock Squier Affinity off the wall of Guitar Center. In an interview he says he changed the color of the volume knob so he could see it in the dark. He is also playing a Squier on the Blues Cruise (whatever they call the cruise with all the blues artists) with just a three piece band. Truly one of the greats. Proving its not what you play it’s how you play.
Don Fagenson AKA "Don Was" on bass, not only playing Bass, but also the Musical Director of this entire concert. He usually is the Musical Director at these type of tribute shows. Almost always paired with Kenny Aronoff. Thanks for posting this great video!
Another great tune! If you get to meet the rest of the band at the TTB show, spend a minute with Isacc Eady. He is not only a mindbogglingly great drummer, but also a great guitar player, key player, singer, writer...etc. He is the most musical dude I have ever known. Also just a flat out fantastic human. They couldn't have picked a better guy to add. Enjoy the show!
Love your passion and this is one of my all time favorite songs. This version is phenomenal and hits you in the chest. Definitely check out Allmans album version, one of my favorite Gregg vocal tracks. Thanks a lot made my day love your videos
That entire concert is a masterclass and one of the greatest concerts I have ever seen. For those of you interested in looking it up or trying to buy it, it's called "All my friends" a tribute to Gregg Allman.
This is my favorite review you’ve done…very interesting theoretical breakdown of Gregg Allman’s most overlooked tune. We were fortunate to be in attendance at The Fabulous Fox in Atlanta this night. Extremely fortunate actually; our friend secured some of the last four tickets available…it sold out in an instant. Was stunned to hear this performed…I don’t think it had been performed since 1976 before ABB’s initial breakup, and wasn’t performed ever again to my knowledge. Wish Gregg was singing but that’s not how this tribute was set up. Eric Church did bring the energy; not a big fan of his but kudos to him anyways. Loved your breakdown of Jack’s approach…what a player. Soaring, melancholy lead…not a wasted note to be found. Makes me happy that your review may bring attention to a really beautiful and heavy overlooked Gregg Allman song… always a favorite of mine. For some cool Jack and Derek interplay… check out ‘End of the Line’ from this concert. Was one of the first tunes performed this night (Warren Haynes was also featured) and Derek and Jack P had a little moment, lot of smiles and nods. Was a cool moment I won’t forget. And needless to say, it was guitarmageddon haha… 🍄
Thanks very much for this video. Really helpful insight into the great songwriting "tricks" being used here. I have subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos. Cheers!
Oh and of course Mr. Chuck Leavell on keys, who charts out all of his music. Chuck has played with everyone from of course ABB to Black Crows, and Blues Travelers and the list goes on, oh and may I add Rolling Stones this guy is the #legend on this stage.
The sing is on the Allman Brothers anthology album. You have to hear it brother! Greg singing with I believe Bonnie Bramlett singing a haunting background vocal. Very minimalistic but so powerful it can bring you to tears!! A MUST listen!!
What an awesome gift to receive and whats better than havin southern country Rock on your channel you should out EC’s “how about you” “smoke a little smoke”, “creepin” He’s gotta quite a few good little rockers
This was from the 'All My Friends' concert tribute for Gregg Allman a few years ago. FYI, two former Allman Brothers on the stage. As you noted, Jack Pearson was there on guitar and Chuck Leavell on piano. That show was awesome, with the Brothers ending the show with an incredible 'Whipping Post'. Your reaction to that final number would be greatly appreciated!
100% agree! Derek Trucks breaks a string toward the end… you have to watch closely to see it because he yanks it away and just keeps on going! Awesome!!
Thanks Micheal for always sharing such great content and and insights. I’m a career bassist and Dead Head. I’m sure that this has already been commented on, but I feel compelled… the bassist is Don Was. Don was initially know as the co-founder/bassist of Was(Not Was) of Walk the Dinosaur fame. He went on to produce for such little known acts as The Rolling Stones (and many others). He is the current president of Blue Note records and the bassist for Bob Weir and the Wolf Bros. There is a great episode of the “Comes a Time” podcast where he and Oteil share insights on playing the GD catalog. By the way, my wife is a big fan as well. She thinks (and I quote) that you are a “cutie pie”.
Hi Michael, Massive fan! Not a guitarist, never touched one but you explain what I feel when I hear music. Just heard one of the most beautiful songs and I'm sure you've already heard it but would love to see your reaction. While we cry - live by Kenny Wayne Sheppard If you haven't heard it yet, your welcome 😊 Have a great life and keep doing what your doing! Thank you
Eric Church is an amazing artist. Not “country artist”. Artist. His concerts are phenomenal and his band is amazing. He’s in my top three live performers with P!nk and Keith Urban.
That is Don Was on bass!!!!!!!! that is Chuck Leavell on Keys. YOU HAVE TO KNOW THOSE!!!!!!!!!! Chuck was in the Allman Brothers after Duane died filling in the second guitarist on keys. He was on Eric Claptons unplugged. Hes been touring with the Rolling Stones for decades..... Don was credentials are miles and miles and miles long. He's like Kenny, he's everywhere.
Wasn't that on Greg's solo record called, I'm no angel which was a big hit as well. Dan Toler played guitar on that record and on Dickie Betts solo projects
Thanks Michael for sharing. For this song, the band includes Don Was (Bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards), Jack Pearson (guitar), Audley Freed (Acoustic), Rami Jaffee (keyboard), Kenny Aronoff (drums), Jimmy Hall (Harmonica) & The McCrary Sisters - Regina, Ann and Alfreda (Backing vocals). RIP Gregg's friend Chank who recently passed, for whom this song was written for. Looking forward to Bob's book "Play all Night"
You sir, get the pin.
👏🏻 thank you…knew that was Rami back there
See you at Tedeschi Trucks in October!
Jack Pearson's solo during Melissa from this same concert, might just be the best solo I've ever heard. The bends and vibrato are just PERFECT.
Oh my God a lot of those names you just typed off there are some Heavy Hitters in my opinion
I don’t understand anything you say about chords, scales, etc. I watch your channel because your enthusiasm and joy makes me happy. I appreciate what the musicians are doing so much more through your analysis. Thank you Mr. Palmisano!
Same here. I played trumpet from 6th through 12th grade and never really grasped the way scales work. The art-side of music still confuses me.
That would be a good lyric
Exactly!! As a musician , I feel like we have all went but we haven’t arrived. That’s why we love music so much. Just playing trying to get somewhere but there’s no destination and we don’t care.
Once you realize that The Allman Bros are quite possibly the greatest band ever to hit the stage , all this awesomeness will make more sense.
This channel could also be called, "how to enjoy music more". All positivity and valuable lessons. No criticism, snobbery, or gatekeeping. Love it.
"You went, but you didn't arrive". Beautiful.
Gotta love Eric Church. I’ve heard he’s one of the best country artists ever to see live. Cant wait to do it someday.
Facts
He definitely is. Seen him 6 times and it never disappoints
True. One of the first shows to play at the end of the lockdowns I bought us tickets to the Buffalo NY show for my fiancé’s birthday and WOW.

YOU nailed it... every musician on the stage, AND the angels in the background are so into it! Thanks for the review, great 30 minutes of my morning.
Fabulous description of the interplay happening in this band. I'm loving your videos.....thanks for sharing your amazing talent.
ECs live stuff is what got me into guitar.
Win Lose or Draw is an underrated gem of an Allman Brothers song. RIP Gregg and Duane
A KILLER TRACK!
That entire Concert was insane!! Jack Pearson was on Fire….EC 💯
Bass player, and I learned.. I've been tracking the Allman Brothers for years and you taught me what I was missing. Not only for guitar players but you help bass player too. Thanks.
Just noticed Eric wasn't wearing his ears. He is singing off pure emotion from the band
Can we take a moment and think about the fact that he said ‘My Wife and I were invited’ and appreciate the respect invested in that statement?
"Oh god this video is gonna be long! 1000 % passion in Michael's music soul..

Unbelievable lesson!!! What a great version of this song!!!
Thanks Michael love your breakdowns. You have inspired me to start playing again, your enthusiasm is infectious.

This has been one of my favorites since it was released! Dickey Betts plays the original lead lines that influenced Jack Pearson! Gregg sings with great pain!! Thanks again!
Anything Jack Pearson is involved with is automatically top shelf. Ain't Wastin Time No More from the show is fantastic as well.
I’m glad others see it that way too. Pearson is one of those rare talents that’s just too fuckin good lol
Jack Pearson is the best non well known guitarist on the planet. His versatility is amazing! Blues, jazz, slide, country, bluegrass………..a monster.
I love Martina McBride when she looks back at Jack after his slide solo in the tune she was singing and she just says, WOW!
This song reminds me so much of "The Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning"
I like Eric Church alot
I could watch all day...love this!
Quite proud of myself for answering “3rd Hunting!” When you asked the question!!
Every time Eric Church does a cover, he nails it. Highly recommend his covers of Tennessee Jed by Grateful Dead, if Mississippi Moon by John Anderson
this tribute was when I first discovered Jack Pearson. he's so good!
Wow…invited by the Tedeschi/Trucks band?!? Dude that’s so awesome. So happy for you. I’m strictly a piano guy but I absolutely LOVE your videos and I apply everything you teach to the piano 🙏✌🏼❤️
An underated album. Win, Lose or Draw.
Don Fagenson AKA "Don Was" on bass, not only playing Bass, but also the Musical Director of this entire concert. He usually is the Musical Director at these type of tribute shows. Almost always paired with Kenny Aronoff. Thanks for posting this great video!
That was probably my favorite one of your videos. Thank you for doing this.
That solo by Jack was absolutely incredible
Been waiting
For you to do an Eric Church react! Stumbled across your channel a few weeks ago and now I’m hooked! Keep up the great work my man!!
Heading to the Beacon from Chicago for the Friday night show. Can’t f’ing wait.
Great content, lad. Your passion shines through!

This is my favorite review you’ve done…very interesting theoretical breakdown of Gregg Allman’s most overlooked tune. We were fortunate to be in attendance at The Fabulous Fox in Atlanta this night. I've always loved this tune. And yes, Jack Pearson is one of the all time greats
@Michael Palmisano that’s a master class in breaking it down. Truly enjoyable to watch and learn with you!
Man I’m a big fan of your videos.
That's definitely master class! Granite Falls finest right there. Awesome vocal!!
What a cool Anniversary Gift. I’m happy & excited for y’all !! I know you’re over the moon!
Love the Beacon....Saw ABB six nights straight during the 2001 Beacon Run
Akin to Timberlake and Stapleton is certainly overstated IMO but it’s a nice piece of music well played.
Oh and of course Mr. Chuck Leavell on keys, who charts out all of his music. Chuck has played with everyone from of course ABB to Black Crows, and Blues Travelers and the list goes on, oh and may I add Rolling Stones this guy is the #legend on this stage.
That was sweet as frig, Bonus your commentary.
And as always
I was entertained
The sing is on the Allman Brothers anthology album. You have to hear it brother! Greg singing with I believe Bonnie Bramlett singing a haunting background vocal. Very minimalistic but so powerful it can bring you to tears!! A MUST listen!!
My guitar, the one I grabbed when you said grab your guitars, once opened for Eric Church in Seattle. I was not playing it, sadly.
This is AWSOMENESS
What an awesome gift to receive and whats better than havin southern country Rock on your channel you should out EC’s “how about you” “smoke a little smoke”, “creepin” He’s gotta quite a few good little rockers
Amazing Michael!
Enjoy the TTB show! Just saw them in Berkeley, CA, on Saturday
Awesome!!
That whipping post is insanely good. Masterclass of tension building from rhythm section. Epic solos by Warren and Derek.
Widespread Panic did Wasted Words too of course it was awesome
Chief!! He is awesome!!
your enthusiasm is infectious :)
The legendary Chuck Leavell on keyboards.
I’ll at the Beacon that Monday on the floor, then upstairs for the final Fri/Sat. 🎸👍
Fascinating!!! Thanks Michael1
Voice leading and balls. Pro ball no doubt. Xtra large vibes 🔥⚡️🌀
That is Kenny Arnoff.
Legend.
I’ll be there October 6th.!
Eye wateringly good guitar
I see you back there Jack Pearson !
Correction. Greg Allman anthology. Trying to send a link to this song with Greg and Bonnie Bramlett. Gives me chills every time.
Hey, give a shout out to those backing vocals. It's pure church (heh) and they just bring it.
Loved the breakdown on this one. Great song breakdown!
Hi Michael,
Massive fan! Not a guitarist, never touched one but you explain what I feel when I hear music. Just heard one of the most beautiful songs and I'm sure you've already heard it but would love to see your reaction.
While we cry - live by Kenny Wayne Sheppard
If you haven't heard it yet, your welcome 😊
Have a great life and keep doing what your doing!
Thank you
Pretty sure there's a G chord between the E and the resolution to the D in the guitar solo bridge. It hooked my ear so sweet.
Coincidence that the Allmans' album "Win Lose or Draw" was released on 8/22/75??
I bought it on cassette
Eric Church is an amazing artist. Not “country artist”. Artist. His concerts are phenomenal and his band is amazing. He’s in my top three live performers with P!nk and Keith Urban.
Great video Michael. Nov 3rd is a Thursday.
Check out "Jessica" Studio version is my favorite, but, live at Starwood is a very close second. The content and musicality are great
I’m going to that show to on 3rd
if I see you I’ll say what’s up
Love the videos Mike 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Awesome. Another great video! Keep it up
Chuck Leavell is in a lot of great shows, see David Gilmour Live at Pompeii (high hopes ✅)
Kenny Arnoff!!! You need to do Ramble Tamble-John Fogerty and him together =Power
Please, please do Just aint East From this same show... Widespread Panic plays it and its just great.
